What Is HUB International?
How HUB International’s brokerage, San Francisco offices, technology practice, Insureon small-commercial route, compensation and claims support are documented for business buyers.
HUB International Limited describes itself as a full-service insurance broker and financial-services firm. Its website terms say HUB’s subsidiaries are licensed as insurance brokers or agents in various U.S. states and Canadian provinces. The reviewed product pages market brokerage of policies issued by insurers, not HUB as a risk-bearing carrier for those policies. 4,5,9
HUB’s San Francisco Mission Street office describes commercial, personal and employee-benefits brokers working with Bay Area technology, venture-capital, healthcare, real-estate and construction clients, including startups. 1 That local presence is useful context; it is not, by itself, a California coverage map. 5
Pros and Cons
Pros
- A technology-specific catalogue is published, not only a generic liability list. The technology page groups professional liability/technology errors and omissions (E&O), cyber, directors and officers (D&O) and other management lines, transactional/warranty insurance, and people coverages such as workers’ compensation, benefits and key-person insurance. A founder comparing brokers can ask for that mix by name instead of inferring it from a homepage. 10
- Compensation methods are disclosed in one public document. HUB explains insurer-paid commissions, contingent and supplemental commissions, client fees on some complex placements, wholesale commissions, and enhanced pay from “Strategic Carriers.” You can use that page to ask how your proposal is paid, including whether a HUB wholesaler sits in the chain. 7
- There is a documented small-commercial digital path. HUB sends businesses with 50 or fewer employees or under $5 million in revenue to Insureon for an online quote, providing an online route for accounts that fit those criteria. 8 34
- Claims and certificate work are described as broker services. ProEx local teams mention certificates of insurance; the claims practice describes advocacy, TPA coordination and coverage-dispute support. Those are service scopes to confirm in an engagement letter, not proof of how any insurer will pay a claim. 16 32
Cons
- The California producing entity for a HUB retail office is not named on the office pages. Terms say subsidiaries are licensed in various states. Insureon lists Specialty Program Group LLC (dba SPG Insurance Solutions) and California license 0L09546 for its digital agency. The producer entity and its current authority for a San Francisco engagement remain independently unverified. 5 35 38
- Mid-market buying on hubinternational.com is an inquiry, not a priced offer. Product pages ask you to contact a broker. You cannot compare premiums, deductibles or binding speed from those pages alone. 8 11
- Strategic-carrier incentives can affect which markets you see first. HUB says some insurers pay enhanced compensation and that a portion may be used to prioritize those markets. Ask which markets were approached and on what compensation terms. 7
- Published claims statistics are marketing figures. The claims page cites process metrics such as 24-hour reporting turnaround. They are company-reported and do not establish how your claim would be handled. 32
How It Works
On hubinternational.com, commercial buyers are asked to contact a broker, connect with a specialist, or use Contact Us. Small-commercial inquiries meeting HUB’s stated size tests go to Insureon for an online quote. Product pages such as general liability, D&O, cyber and workers’ compensation use “Contact Us” or “Connect With a Broker” rather than an on-site bind flow. Privacy policy language refers to automation for insurance quoting, without documenting a public HUB retail e-commerce checkout for mid-market programs. 8,11,12,13,10,6
HUB’s About Us timeline states that in 2022 it acquired Insureon for digital delivery of small-business commercial insurance. Insureon and TechInsurance say they are part of HUB; Insureon says it operates as a division of Specialty Program Group LLC, doing business as SPG Insurance Solutions. TechInsurance describes itself as part of Insureon rather than as a separate HUB retail office. 4,34,35,36,37
Insureon’s 2022 acquisition announcement said HUB would take the digital agency and brand while Bold Penguin took the technology platform, with Insureon operations placed in Specialty Program Group LLC. TechInsurance, which began as a technology-focused online agency, now describes itself as part of Insureon. A buyer using TechInsurance or Insureon is not automatically in the same servicing team as HUB’s Mission Street office. 36 37
Coverage and Availability
HUB publishes dedicated business-insurance product pages for, among other lines, general liability, commercial property, workers’ compensation, business owners policies, commercial auto (including hired and non-owned exposures and trucking), cyber, directors and officers, professional liability/E&O, crime, fiduciary liability, kidnap and ransom, surety bonds, medical malpractice, marine/inland marine and cargo, boiler and machinery/equipment breakdown, and mergers-and-acquisitions representations-and-warranties insurance. Its casualty page also lists product liability, umbrella and excess, and product-recall as program elements. Employee-benefits brokerage is marketed separately. Actual policy forms, limits and eligibility are not set by those marketing pages. 9,11,19,17,18,20,13,12,14,15,21,22,23,24,25,28,29,26,27,30,16
For technology companies, HUB lists professional liability/technology E&O, cyber, a patent package described as property, auto, liability and umbrella, international placements, cargo/stock throughput, property/builders risk, pollution liability, management liability including D&O, employment-practices liability, fiduciary liability, transactional/warranty insurance, crime, workers’ compensation, employee benefits, key-person life and disability, retirement solutions, and kidnap and ransom. 10
HUB says it has 700+ offices and 21,000+ employees across North America, with corporate headquarters in Chicago. It publishes a California office directory that includes two San Francisco addresses (201 Mission Street and 44 Montgomery Street). An office location is evidence of a local brokerage presence, not of admitted-product availability, surplus-lines use, or that a given coverage can be bound for a California-domiciled company. 4,3,1,2
HUB’s terms say subsidiaries are licensed as brokers or agents in various U.S. states, without naming the California entity for the San Francisco offices. Insureon publishes California license 0L09546 for Specialty Program Group LLC, dba SPG Insurance Solutions; that is Insureon’s disclosure, not an independent California Department of Insurance confirmation. The current license status of SPG and the producer for a HUB San Francisco engagement remain independently unverified. Confirm which entity will appear on the policy and any surplus-lines filing. 5,1,35,38
Workers’ compensation pages note that requirements and markets vary by state, including monopolistic-fund states. California workers’ compensation, surplus-lines use, and any non-admitted placement have to be confirmed on the proposal. 17
Service and Compensation
HUB’s How We Get Paid page says it is compensated primarily through insurer-paid commissions included in premium, and also through contingent income, guaranteed supplemental commissions, and, on some complex programs, client-paid fees disclosed in a proposal, sometimes in addition to commission. It owns wholesale brokerages that may earn a second commission when HUB retail uses them. It may receive fees for de-identified data under insurer consulting agreements, premium-finance administration, interest on fiduciary accounts, and policy or claims administration. Strategic Carriers may pay enhanced compensation, part of which may incentivize employees to prioritize those markets. No schedule of commission percentages or standard fees is published. 7
HUB describes ongoing servicing through local account teams (ProEx notes local policy review and certificates of insurance), a Risk Management Information System for claims administration, certificate tracking and carrier/TPA data, and employee-benefits work that includes multi-year cost planning and renewal support. RMIS is described as available in various tiers. None of those pages publish a standard service-level agreement or fee for those tools. 16,33,30
HUB markets a claims-management practice that it says includes dedicated claims professionals, advocacy, coverage-dispute support, TPA selection and audits, reserve analysis and litigation-management support. It states the team has more than 225 claims professionals in the United States and Canada. The page also publishes numerical process claims such as 24-hour turnaround on claims reporting; those figures are company-reported marketing metrics, not independently verified outcomes, and they do not describe how a particular insurer will adjust a claim. 32
HUB also markets employee-benefits consulting, including multi-year cost planning. Benefits agreements and property-and-casualty appointments can be separate. 30
What to Confirm in a Quote
-
Legal producer and license. Ask for the exact licensed entity, license number and surplus-lines status that will appear on California documents, and check them in the Department of Insurance record. The office address and Insureon’s published 0L09546 number are not substitutes for that check. 1 35
-
Which channel you are in. Confirm whether the work is HUB retail, Insureon/SPG, a HUB wholesaler, or another affiliate, and who services certificates and claims. 8 7
-
Issuing insurers and forms. HUB does not publish a complete carrier list. Insureon’s named examples apply to Insureon. Get specimen wording, limits, retentions and exclusions for D&O, E&O/cyber, workers’ compensation and any warranty or builders-risk cover. 7 34
HUB’s compensation page says it has access to the products and services of hundreds of insurers and that it focuses on a smaller set of “Strategic Carriers,” which may pay enhanced compensation. Property, casualty and marine pages refer to domestic, national, regional, specialty and global carrier relationships without publishing a complete appointment list. ProEx says it places more than $2 billion of premium with top-rated insurance carriers; that volume and rating language is company-reported and does not name the carriers. Issuing insurers therefore have to be taken from a quote, not from the public catalogue. 7,19,27,28,16
-
Compensation on your account. Ask for commission, contingent or supplemental amounts, client fees, wholesale layers and whether Strategic Carrier incentives applied. 7
-
Service tools and claims path. If RMIS, ProEx specialists or the claims practice are part of the pitch, get eligibility, cost and who reports the claim to the insurer. 33 32
