Coalition vs
HUB International
Compare a Coalition cyber and Tech E&O placement with HUB’s advisor and Insureon small-commercial routes.
Introduction
A startup approaching a more involved renewal may contact HUB expecting a local advisory team, while its website also provides an Insureon small-commercial route. Coalition is a product placement reached through appointed brokers. The first decision is therefore who will manage the insurance program; the second is which cyber and technology policy that process should produce. 26 13 1
Where Each Provider Shines
Where Coalition Shines
Where HUB International Shines
- HUB’s technology practice markets insurance and benefits programs to startups and software, hardware and digital-media companies, and says it currently insures more than 5,000 technology companies. 28
- HUB routes qualifying small commercial accounts to Insureon’s online quote and other business insurance to a HUB advisor or local office; there is no published self-serve bind path for mid-market programs on hubinternational.com. 26,29,30,31,28,24

Key Differences Between Coalition and HUB International
The Entry Route Determines the Next Conversation
HUB’s contact page says it supports small businesses through partner Insureon and directs companies with 50 employees or fewer or under $5 million in annual revenue to start with an online quote. Larger or other commercial needs are directed to HUB commercial-insurance teams or a local office search. Those thresholds are HUB’s routing rules, not a regulatory definition of small business. 26
HUB identifies Insureon within its corporate group, and Insureon operates as a division of Specialty Program Group. This is not evidence that every HUB office uses the same process or insurer panel. Ask which legal producer receives the inquiry and whether a specialist team will review the technology business. Coalition’s broker route is a separate access question; this comparison does not establish a HUB appointment with Coalition. 22 53 13
A Market Search Has Its Own Compensation Structure
HUB says it works with hundreds of insurers while focusing on Strategic Carriers that may pay enhanced compensation. Its disclosure also covers client fees and commissions earned by owned wholesale brokers. Coalition separately discloses producer commissions and incentives. A founder comparing total placement cost should ask which intermediaries are involved and what each receives; neither brand’s general disclosure supplies an account-specific total. 25 4
Program Administration and Cyber Response Can Be Complementary
HUB describes local policy review, certificate support and a tiered risk-management information system for claims and carrier data. Coalition describes Control security services and incident triage. If both an advisor and a cyber policy are involved, assign separate owners for certificates, renewal negotiation, security alerts and urgent incident notification. HUB’s advertised specialist capabilities require an engagement-level commitment; they are not automatically included because the firm markets to technology companies. 34 51 8 9
What to Confirm in Quotes
Request the assigned HUB or Insureon entity, account team and service scope before supplying a full renewal submission. Ask for the markets approached, any affiliate involved, the commission and fee explanation, and who will compare the technology-policy wording. Confirm the California producer and issuing insurer from the actual proposal; HUB’s office directory and Coalition’s brand name do not settle those details. 23 25 3
Service Comparison
Coalition vs HUB International: documented services and availability
| Criteria | Coalition | HUB International |
|---|---|---|
| Business role | Coalition combines commercial insurance offerings with cyber risk-management services. In the United States, Coalition Insurance Solutions, Inc. (CIS) is the disclosed insurance producer and surplus lines broker; the issuing insurer is responsible for policy obligations. 2,7 Coalition lists CIS’s California producer and surplus lines license as 0L76155. This is a company disclosure; current license status has not been independently checked with the California regulator. 2 Coalition’s legal page identifies Coalition Incident Response, Inc., doing business as Coalition Security, or independent third parties as security-service providers. Coalition Security does not provide insurance. 2 | HUB International Limited describes itself as a full-service insurance broker and financial-services firm. Its website terms say HUB’s subsidiaries are licensed as insurance brokers or agents in various U.S. states and Canadian provinces. The reviewed product pages market brokerage of policies issued by insurers, not HUB as a risk-bearing carrier for those policies. 22,23,27 HUB’s About Us timeline states that in 2022 it acquired Insureon for digital delivery of small-business commercial insurance. Insureon and TechInsurance say they are part of HUB; Insureon says it operates as a division of Specialty Program Group LLC, doing business as SPG Insurance Solutions. TechInsurance describes itself as part of Insureon rather than as a separate HUB retail office. 22,52,53,54,55 |
| Application process | Coalition directs buyers to an appointed insurance broker and offers help finding access if their broker does not offer Coalition. It describes underwriting that considers industry, finances, operations and security posture. 13 Coalition’s broker instructions describe adding Tech E&O during the cyber quote process, supplying a product or service description and answering contract-related questions. Some quotes require review before a price is released. 12 | On hubinternational.com, commercial buyers are asked to contact a broker, connect with a specialist, or use Contact Us. Small-commercial inquiries meeting HUB’s stated size tests go to Insureon for an online quote. Product pages such as general liability, D&O, cyber and workers’ compensation use “Contact Us” or “Connect With a Broker” rather than an on-site bind flow. Privacy policy language refers to automation for insurance quoting, without documenting a public HUB retail e-commerce checkout for mid-market programs. 26,29,30,31,28,24 |
| Access to insurers | Coalition identifies Coalition Insurance Company (NAIC 29530) for admitted cyber and describes CIS as acting for unaffiliated insurers on non-admitted placements. The reviewed sources do not assign a single insurer to every California Tech E&O quote; confirm the named carrier on the quote and policy. 3,2 | HUB’s compensation page says it has access to the products and services of hundreds of insurers and that it focuses on a smaller set of “Strategic Carriers,” which may pay enhanced compensation. Property, casualty and marine pages refer to domestic, national, regional, specialty and global carrier relationships without publishing a complete appointment list. ProEx says it places more than $2 billion of premium with top-rated insurance carriers; that volume and rating language is company-reported and does not name the carriers. Issuing insurers therefore have to be taken from a quote, not from the public catalogue. 25,37,45,46,34 Insureon says it has access to 100+ insurance providers and names The Hartford, Chubb, Hiscox, Liberty Mutual and Travelers as examples. Those names are Insureon’s examples for its digital agency, not a statement that every HUB retail placement uses the same insurers, and they do not identify the issuing company on a particular policy. 52 |
| Fees and compensation | Coalition says independent producers typically receive commissions based on premium for new and renewed policies. Contingent commissions, placement incentives and compensation for certain cybersecurity sales may also apply. 4 Coalition says it retains part of earned premiums to fund operations and broker commissions and receives additional carrier payments based on the portfolio’s annual loss ratio. 16 The reviewed compensation disclosures do not state the commission percentage, broker fee or total premium for a particular startup quote. Obtain an itemized cost and compensation explanation from the placing broker. 4,16 | HUB’s How We Get Paid page says it is compensated primarily through insurer-paid commissions included in premium, and also through contingent income, guaranteed supplemental commissions, and, on some complex programs, client-paid fees disclosed in a proposal, sometimes in addition to commission. It owns wholesale brokerages that may earn a second commission when HUB retail uses them. It may receive fees for de-identified data under insurer consulting agreements, premium-finance administration, interest on fiduciary accounts, and policy or claims administration. Strategic Carriers may pay enhanced compensation, part of which may incentivize employees to prioritize those markets. No schedule of commission percentages or standard fees is published. 25 |
| Servicing and renewals | Coalition describes Control policyholder features at no additional cost, including attack-surface monitoring, vendor-risk monitoring, vulnerability alerts and guidance. Login Security requires connecting a Microsoft or Google environment. Additional security products are promoted separately. 8 Coalition says cyber renewals begin 90 days before expiration and follow Automatic, Express or Standard paths based on the account. Express renewals require responses; Standard renewals require a bind order and updated signed application, with additional underwriting conditions for some accounts. Automatic renewal does not guarantee an unchanged premium. 15 | HUB describes ongoing servicing through local account teams (ProEx notes local policy review and certificates of insurance), a Risk Management Information System for claims administration, certificate tracking and carrier/TPA data, and employee-benefits work that includes multi-year cost planning and renewal support. RMIS is described as available in various tiers. None of those pages publish a standard service-level agreement or fee for those tools. 34,51,48 |
