Coterie Insurance vs HUB International

Why Coterie’s agent-distributed managing general agent (MGA) platform is not a substitute for HUB International’s retail brokerage when a founder does or does not already have an appointed agent.

Introduction

Coterie and HUB International can both appear on a small-business insurance file, but they are not the same kind of firm. Coterie underwrites and binds eligible policies for appointed agents. HUB arranges coverage as a broker and, for accounts that meet its published size tests, points buyers to Insureon. The question is whether you already work through an agent who can access Coterie, or you need a retail broker—or HUB’s digital partner—to shop markets. 1 5 27 31

Where Each Provider Shines

Where Coterie Insurance Shines

  • Agents can use prefilled business details to customize quotes and bind eligible small-business policies in one dashboard. 5,6,2
  • Policyholders can access documents, generate certificates, request changes and start claims online, with their agent handling coverage questions. 10,8

Where HUB International Shines

  • HUB’s technology practice markets insurance and benefits programs to startups and software, hardware and digital-media companies, and says it currently insures more than 5,000 technology companies. 33
  • HUB routes qualifying small commercial accounts to Insureon’s online quote and other business insurance to a HUB advisor or local office; there is no published self-serve bind path for mid-market programs on hubinternational.com. 31,34,35,36,33,29

Key Differences Between Coterie and HUB International

Managing General Agent Versus Retail Broker

Coterie describes an agent-distributed managing general agent (MGA) that quotes and binds eligible small-business policies for appointed agents, not a public direct marketplace. 1 5 HUB describes retail brokerage through subsidiaries licensed as brokers or agents, with mid-market intake on Contact Us rather than Coterie’s agent bind flow. 27 28

Coterie’s site is not a direct-to-founder storefront equivalent to HUB Contact Us. Its workflow is built for agents using business details to quote and bind. HUB’s mid-market path is an advisor inquiry; its small-commercial path is Insureon, a HUB-affiliated digital agency, not Coterie. 6 57

Paper, Appetite, and Coastal Limits

Coterie describes its carrier role for supported small-business products, including documented business owners policy and coastal limitations. HUB refers to hundreds of insurers and Strategic Carriers without publishing an appointment list. A coverage label missing from Coterie’s public catalogue does not establish that HUB cannot place it, and HUB’s longer catalogue does not establish that Coterie declined the risk. 2 4 30 32

Who You Call After the Policy Binds

Coterie documents policyholder tools for documents, certificates, changes and starting claims, with the agent remaining involved in coverage questions. HUB describes local certificate work through specialist teams, a risk-management information system for some clients, and Insureon servicing when that channel is used. Ask which portal and which licensed entity would actually service the account. 10 56 39

What to Confirm in Quotes

  • Access: whether your current agent is appointed with Coterie, or you would appoint HUB or Insureon. 5 31

  • Eligibility: Coterie’s product and geography limits versus HUB’s unnamed California retail producer and Insureon’s published 0L09546 number. 8 58

  • Change workflow: who issues certificates and who must approve endorsements. 10 39

Service Comparison

Coterie vs HUB International: documented services and availability

CriteriaCoterie InsuranceHUB International
Business role

Coterie Insurance is a managing general agency and digital small-business insurance platform built primarily for licensed agents, brokers and distribution partners. It is not a direct-to-consumer insurance marketplace; a business owner is directed to work with an agent. 1,6,19

Coterie Applications, Inc. provides the platform under the website terms. Florida's current corporate record lists it as the member of Coterie Insurance Agency, LLC, the agency named in Coterie's footer; Massachusetts separately lists the agency with an active property-and-casualty producer license through December 28, 2026. 8,1,22,23

Coterie's website lists multiple investors, and Allianz X records Coterie as a current direct investment after leading a 2025 Series C round. The reviewed sources do not establish an acquisition, a controlling parent or Coterie's complete current ownership table. 1,19,20,22

HUB International Limited describes itself as a full-service insurance broker and financial-services firm. Its website terms say HUB’s subsidiaries are licensed as insurance brokers or agents in various U.S. states and Canadian provinces. The reviewed product pages market brokerage of policies issued by insurers, not HUB as a risk-bearing carrier for those policies. 27,28,32

HUB’s About Us timeline states that in 2022 it acquired Insureon for digital delivery of small-business commercial insurance. Insureon and TechInsurance say they are part of HUB; Insureon says it operates as a division of Specialty Program Group LLC, doing business as SPG Insurance Solutions. TechInsurance describes itself as part of Insureon rather than as a separate HUB retail office. 27,57,58,59,60

Application process

A licensed agent starts a quote in Coterie's dashboard with the client's business name and address, selects the principal industry, confirms or edits prefilled details, customizes coverage and pays to bind an eligible policy. Business owners who do not already have an agent can use Coterie's agent finder. 5,6,2

Coterie advertises bindable quotes in under two minutes for eligible standard risks. Its terms qualify that claim: a quote or estimate is not an insurance contract, and coverage remains subject to underwriting approval, eligibility verification and formal policy issuance. 6,8

On hubinternational.com, commercial buyers are asked to contact a broker, connect with a specialist, or use Contact Us. Small-commercial inquiries meeting HUB’s stated size tests go to Insureon for an online quote. Product pages such as general liability, D&O, cyber and workers’ compensation use “Contact Us” or “Connect With a Broker” rather than an on-site bind flow. Privacy policy language refers to automation for insurance quoting, without documenting a public HUB retail e-commerce checkout for mid-market programs. 31,34,35,36,33,29

Access to insurers

Coterie's terms say carrier partners underwrite and issue its policies. Its claims page identifies a separate Spinnaker Specialty route for surplus-lines policies beginning CSE, while its current coastal guide names Spinnaker Insurance Company only for eligible coastal Texas BOP risks. The issuing insurer therefore needs to be checked on each quote and policy. 8,11,17

HUB’s compensation page says it has access to the products and services of hundreds of insurers and that it focuses on a smaller set of “Strategic Carriers,” which may pay enhanced compensation. Property, casualty and marine pages refer to domestic, national, regional, specialty and global carrier relationships without publishing a complete appointment list. ProEx says it places more than $2 billion of premium with top-rated insurance carriers; that volume and rating language is company-reported and does not name the carriers. Issuing insurers therefore have to be taken from a quote, not from the public catalogue. 30,42,50,51,39

Insureon says it has access to 100+ insurance providers and names The Hartford, Chubb, Hiscox, Liberty Mutual and Travelers as examples. Those names are Insureon’s examples for its digital agency, not a statement that every HUB retail placement uses the same insurers, and they do not identify the issuing company on a particular policy. 57

Coverage lines

Coterie's current core catalogue consists of a business owner's policy (BOP), standalone general liability and miscellaneous professional liability (MPL/E&O). A BOP combines liability with property coverage; the other two are distinct policies. 2,4,3,14

Coterie's December 2025 BOP guide states eligibility of up to $10 million in revenue and 50 employees, reduced to $5 million and 15 employees for contractors. It lists up to $1 million in building value and $500,000 in business personal property, with limits and availability still varying by state, industry and quote. 13,8

Coterie currently markets cyber, workplace violence, employment practices liability, restaurant, liquor liability and contractors equipment endorsements. Its BOP guide also lists optional hired and non-owned auto liability, equipment breakdown, drone liability and other property extensions. These are optional additions, not evidence of separate standalone policies. 12,13,15,16

Coterie's MPL is a claims-made professional liability policy for listed service professions. Its current guide says the basic policy includes a 60-day extended reporting period and offers longer periods for purchase; retroactive coverage and limits depend on the selected terms and eligibility. 14,8

Coterie's claims page expressly says it does not write workers' compensation or automobile policies. Hired and non-owned auto appears only as an optional liability endorsement in the BOP guide and should not be read as commercial auto physical-damage coverage. 11,13

HUB publishes dedicated business-insurance product pages for, among other lines, general liability, commercial property, workers’ compensation, business owners policies, commercial auto (including hired and non-owned exposures and trucking), cyber, directors and officers, professional liability/E&O, crime, fiduciary liability, kidnap and ransom, surety bonds, medical malpractice, marine/inland marine and cargo, boiler and machinery/equipment breakdown, and mergers-and-acquisitions representations-and-warranties insurance. Its casualty page also lists product liability, umbrella and excess, and product-recall as program elements. Employee-benefits brokerage is marketed separately. Actual policy forms, limits and eligibility are not set by those marketing pages. 32,34,42,40,41,43,36,35,37,38,44,45,46,47,48,51,52,49,50,53,39

For technology companies, HUB lists professional liability/technology E&O, cyber, a patent package described as property, auto, liability and umbrella, international placements, cargo/stock throughput, property/builders risk, pollution liability, management liability including D&O, employment-practices liability, fiduciary liability, transactional/warranty insurance, crime, workers’ compensation, employee benefits, key-person life and disability, retirement solutions, and kidnap and ransom. 33

Servicing and renewals

Policyholders can use My Policy Center, request policy changes, generate certificates and start a claim online. Coterie tells policyholders to use their agent or broker first for coverage questions and provides public sample BOP, general liability and professional liability forms for orientation. 10,8

Coterie's policyholder FAQ says each business location must have its own policy rather than listing several operating addresses on one Coterie policy. 10

Unless a policy says otherwise, Coterie's terms describe a 12-month policy that may renew automatically. Renewal charges may use the payment method on file, and the policyholder can contact Coterie or use account tools to change renewal preferences. 8

HUB describes ongoing servicing through local account teams (ProEx notes local policy review and certificates of insurance), a Risk Management Information System for claims administration, certificate tracking and carrier/TPA data, and employee-benefits work that includes multi-year cost planning and renewal support. RMIS is described as available in various tiers. None of those pages publish a standard service-level agreement or fee for those tools. 39,56,53
