Alliance Risk vs
Coterie Insurance
How Alliance Risk’s brokerage compares with Coterie’s agent-distributed program for a consultancy adding an office and software product.
Introduction
A consultancy leasing its first office while building a software product has two insurance conversations: premises and professional work. Coterie supplies agents with a small-business program; Alliance Risk is a commercial broker that markets technology E&O and management coverage alongside property and general liability. An agent’s Coterie proposal can therefore be one part of the program rather than a substitute for every brokerage service. 17 13 2 9

Key Differences Between Alliance Risk and Coterie Insurance
The Agent Is Part of the Coterie Purchase
Coterie is a managing general agency, not a direct consumer marketplace. Its agent workflow uses business details to customize and bind eligible policies, with carrier partners issuing the insurance. Alliance Risk’s visible quote route begins with a contact request and its technology E&O service describes reviewing the business before approaching specialist carriers. Compare the work performed by the Coterie agent with the proposed Alliance Risk engagement, not an agent-facing dashboard with a founder-facing form. 17 19 6 10
The records do not establish that Alliance Risk can access Coterie. If keeping a Coterie policy matters, ask about appointment and servicing arrangements rather than assuming these names must be competing endpoints.
Consulting, Software and Employees Need Separate Answers
Coterie’s core professional product is miscellaneous professional liability for eligible service professions. Its optional cyber and employment-practices endorsements are additions to a base policy, not proof of standalone products equivalent to a technology program. Alliance Risk separately lists technology E&O, cyber and employment practices coverage. Have the proposals describe both consulting advice and software delivery, and compare the actual limits and exclusions attached to each activity. 25 23 9
Coterie explicitly says it does not write workers’ compensation or automobile policies. Its agent may arrange those elsewhere. Alliance Risk lists those lines in its broader catalogue, but that list alone does not establish acceptance of this consultancy. The practical question is who completes and maintains the placements outside the quoted core program. 22 9
A Second Location Changes the Administration
Coterie’s policyholder FAQ calls for a separate policy for each operating location. Alliance Risk’s reviewed pages do not establish a comparable location rule. If the office is followed by a workshop or satellite location, ask for a proposed schedule and renewal responsibility now. Coterie supplies owner-facing document and certificate tools while directing coverage questions to the agent; Alliance Risk’s public online-access description is less specific about those tasks. 21 8 7
Availability also needs a product-level answer. Coterie’s broad nationwide professional-liability wording is qualified by its MPL guide and newer quick-start page. Alliance Risk’s national marketing conflicts with selected-state language in its terms. A California address does not settle the profession, location or product appetite for either proposal. 25 18 1 3
What to Confirm in Quotes
- Which policy describes the consulting and software activities, and are cyber and employment-practices protections endorsements or separate contracts?
- Who places and services workers’ compensation, commercial auto and any board coverage outside the Coterie program?
- How are the current office and a planned second location scheduled and renewed?
- Itemize Coterie policy, payment and risk-program charges alongside the agent’s charges, and Alliance Risk’s engagement fees and commissions. 19 3
Service Comparison
Alliance Risk vs Coterie Insurance: documented services and availability
| Criteria | Alliance Risk | Coterie Insurance |
|---|---|---|
| Business role | Alliance Risk describes itself as an independent commercial insurance brokerage and risk advisor. Its terms and privacy policy identify Alliance Risk Insurance Services LLC as the subsidiary agency. 2,3,4 The terms name Alliance Risk Holding Company LLC, while the privacy policy names Alliance Risk, Inc. as the parent. The reviewed disclosures do not resolve that naming discrepancy. 3,4 | Coterie Insurance is a managing general agency and digital small-business insurance platform built primarily for licensed agents, brokers and distribution partners. It is not a direct-to-consumer insurance marketplace; a business owner is directed to work with an agent. 12,17,30 Coterie Applications, Inc. provides the platform under the website terms. Florida's current corporate record lists it as the member of Coterie Insurance Agency, LLC, the agency named in Coterie's footer; Massachusetts separately lists the agency with an active property-and-casualty producer license through December 28, 2026. 19,12,33,34 Coterie's website lists multiple investors, and Allianz X records Coterie as a current direct investment after leading a 2025 Series C round. The reviewed sources do not establish an acquisition, a controlling parent or Coterie's complete current ownership table. 12,30,31,33 |
| Application process | The quote page starts with a contact request for company, website, contact details and a message. It advertises a free, no-obligation quote; the visible form does not provide a bindable offer. 6 For technology E&O, Alliance Risk requests service details, revenue, employee count, major client contracts, existing coverage, five-year claims history and customer concentration. It says it reviews the current program and approaches specialist carriers. 10 The general quote page advertises a quote within 24 hours, while the technology page gives 48–72 hours for standard software risks and five to ten business days for hardware, fintech, healthtech and AI. Treat timing as company estimates, not a binding deadline. 6,1 | A licensed agent starts a quote in Coterie's dashboard with the client's business name and address, selects the principal industry, confirms or edits prefilled details, customizes coverage and pays to bind an eligible policy. Business owners who do not already have an agent can use Coterie's agent finder. 16,17,13 Coterie advertises bindable quotes in under two minutes for eligible standard risks. Its terms qualify that claim: a quote or estimate is not an insurance contract, and coverage remains subject to underwriting approval, eligibility verification and formal policy issuance. 17,19 |
| Availability | Alliance Risk publishes California license number 6014559 and producer NPN 21240567. These are company disclosures; current regulator status, authorized lines and the insurer or surplus-lines route for a California startup remain unverified. 5,8 The technology page says Alliance Risk places startup insurance in all 50 states, but section 4 of its terms limits products and services to selected states. Confirm California availability for each requested line. 1,3 | Coterie says BOP and general liability are admitted products across all 50 states. That is not account-level availability: its terms make every product subject to jurisdiction, business class, underwriting and formal issuance, and temporary catastrophe moratoriums can stop new BOP binding in specified areas. 18,19,29 Coterie's broad broker page says BOP, general liability and professional liability are admitted in all 50 states, but its December 2025 MPL guide says MPL is unavailable in DC, Illinois, Massachusetts, Montana, North Dakota and Virginia. A newer quick-start page narrows the statement to BOP and general liability in all 50 states and MPL in most states. Use the product guide and a current quote for MPL eligibility. 16,18,25 As of September 11, 2026, Coterie says eligible BOP risks 3 to 26 miles from the coast can be considered in Florida, Texas, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina, generally with up to $250,000 of business personal property and no building coverage in the coastal zone. Risks closer than 3 miles remain ineligible under this expansion, and Florida building coverage is unavailable statewide. 28,29 |
| Servicing and renewals | Alliance Risk offers a no-charge review of existing technology E&O policies, including gaps, retroactive dates and market alternatives. This is a company-described service, not evidence of review quality. 10 Alliance Risk advertises online program access and 24/7 support. Its contact page lists weekday telephone hours of 9am–6pm EST; an after-hours response commitment and renewal timetable were not established in those pages. 8,7 | Policyholders can use My Policy Center, request policy changes, generate certificates and start a claim online. Coterie tells policyholders to use their agent or broker first for coverage questions and provides public sample BOP, general liability and professional liability forms for orientation. 21,19 Coterie's policyholder FAQ says each business location must have its own policy rather than listing several operating addresses on one Coterie policy. 21 Unless a policy says otherwise, Coterie's terms describe a 12-month policy that may renew automatically. Renewal charges may use the payment method on file, and the policyholder can contact Coterie or use account tools to change renewal preferences. 19 |
