HUB International vs Mylo

How HUB International’s brokerage and Insureon path differ from Mylo’s online small-commercial shopping, including why a historic Lockton mention does not make Mylo a Lockton company.

Introduction

HUB International and Mylo can both quote small commercial packages, which makes ownership and channel easy to mix up. HUB is the parent brand of a large brokerage and of the Insureon digital agency. Mylo is a digital agency that shops available quotes online or with an advisor. Mylo describes a historic Lockton relationship that does not establish current Lockton ownership; Group 1001 is documented as a later backer. The buyer question is which digital or advisor path you are actually appointing. 4 34 40 39

Where Each Provider Shines

Where HUB International Shines

  • HUB’s technology practice markets insurance and benefits programs to startups and software, hardware and digital-media companies, and says it currently insures more than 5,000 technology companies. 10
  • HUB routes qualifying small commercial accounts to Insureon’s online quote and other business insurance to a HUB advisor or local office; there is no published self-serve bind path for mid-market programs on hubinternational.com. 8,11,12,13,10,6

Where Mylo Shines

  • Buyers can shop online or with a licensed advisor; Mylo says it compares available quotes, with an agent finalizing most policies. 39,41
  • Employers with 2–99 employees can explore group benefits with a licensed advisor and a year-round HR portal. 52

Key Differences Between HUB International and Mylo

Two Digital Small-Commercial Stories

HUB’s About Us timeline states that it acquired Insureon for digital small-business commercial insurance; Insureon says it operates as a division of Specialty Program Group LLC, doing business as SPG Insurance Solutions. 4 34 35 Mylo’s ownership history records a historic Lockton relationship that does not establish current Lockton ownership, with Group 1001 as a later backer. 40 41

If HUB sends you to Insureon, you are in Specialty Program Group’s digital agency, not Mylo. If you start on Mylo, you are not in HUB retail. 8 41

How Shopping Works

Mylo says buyers can shop online or with a licensed advisor and that it compares available quotes, subject to its transaction terms. 39 41 HUB mid-market product pages ask for a broker contact; the published small-account path is Insureon, not a comparison interface on hubinternational.com. 8

Group Benefits Versus HUB Benefits Practice

Mylo documents group benefits exploration for employers with 2–99 employees. HUB markets a full employee-benefits brokerage. Headcount bands are not interchangeable eligibility. 39 30

Insurers

Mylo distinguishes carrier access from the issuing insurer on a given policy. HUB and Insureon similarly do not present a single-insurer brand story. Name the company on the specimen. 42 34

What to Confirm in Quotes

  • Legal producer and parent on Mylo versus Insureon / Specialty Program Group LLC versus HUB retail. 41 35

  • Whether group benefits and property-casualty are the same appointment. 30

  • Quote comparison set: which markets Mylo or Insureon actually returned. 39 34

Service Comparison

HUB International vs Mylo: documented services and availability

CriteriaHUB InternationalMylo
Business role

HUB International Limited describes itself as a full-service insurance broker and financial-services firm. Its website terms say HUB’s subsidiaries are licensed as insurance brokers or agents in various U.S. states and Canadian provinces. The reviewed product pages market brokerage of policies issued by insurers, not HUB as a risk-bearing carrier for those policies. 4,5,9

HUB’s About Us timeline states that in 2022 it acquired Insureon for digital delivery of small-business commercial insurance. Insureon and TechInsurance say they are part of HUB; Insureon says it operates as a division of Specialty Program Group LLC, doing business as SPG Insurance Solutions. TechInsurance describes itself as part of Insureon rather than as a separate HUB retail office. 4,34,35,36,37

Mylo describes itself as an independent insurance broker for small and growing businesses. It recommends coverage and compares available quotes from multiple insurers rather than issuing its own policies. 39,40

Mylo says it launched within Lockton Companies in 2015 and now has Group 1001 as its backer. A May 2023 Kansas City Business Journal report said Group 1001 became the majority investor and Mylo was no longer part of Lockton; the reviewed sources did not provide a newer ownership percentage. 40,54,55

Mylo, LLC operates the website and is the named insurance agency. Its footer identifies Mylo Insurance Solutions, LLC as a trade name in California, Illinois, Michigan and North Dakota, and Mylo Solutions, LLC as a trade name in New York. 39,41,56,57

Mylo also supplies an embedded insurance-shopping service to other companies and insurance agencies. A buyer entering through a partner should identify whether Mylo, the partner or another licensed entity is the producer for the transaction. 53,54

Application process

On hubinternational.com, commercial buyers are asked to contact a broker, connect with a specialist, or use Contact Us. Small-commercial inquiries meeting HUB’s stated size tests go to Insureon for an online quote. Product pages such as general liability, D&O, cyber and workers’ compensation use “Contact Us” or “Connect With a Broker” rather than an on-site bind flow. Privacy policy language refers to automation for insurance quoting, without documenting a public HUB retail e-commerce checkout for mid-market programs. 8,11,12,13,10,6

A business buyer can answer questions about the company and industry online or work by phone with a licensed advisor. Mylo says its system recommends coverage and compares available quotes; some carrier and coverage combinations can be purchased online, but an agent finalizes the policy in most cases. 39,41

Mylo’s Terms of Use say a purchase may carry additional transaction terms, require accurate and complete application answers and is not guaranteed to result in an issued policy. The posted site terms were last updated in November 2018, so buyers should review the current terms presented with a quote. 41

Coverage lines

HUB publishes dedicated business-insurance product pages for, among other lines, general liability, commercial property, workers’ compensation, business owners policies, commercial auto (including hired and non-owned exposures and trucking), cyber, directors and officers, professional liability/E&O, crime, fiduciary liability, kidnap and ransom, surety bonds, medical malpractice, marine/inland marine and cargo, boiler and machinery/equipment breakdown, and mergers-and-acquisitions representations-and-warranties insurance. Its casualty page also lists product liability, umbrella and excess, and product-recall as program elements. Employee-benefits brokerage is marketed separately. Actual policy forms, limits and eligibility are not set by those marketing pages. 9,11,19,17,18,20,13,12,14,15,21,22,23,24,25,28,29,26,27,30,16

For technology companies, HUB lists professional liability/technology E&O, cyber, a patent package described as property, auto, liability and umbrella, international placements, cargo/stock throughput, property/builders risk, pollution liability, management liability including D&O, employment-practices liability, fiduciary liability, transactional/warranty insurance, crime, workers’ compensation, employee benefits, key-person life and disability, retirement solutions, and kidnap and ransom. 10

Mylo’s current commercial catalogue lists business owner’s policies, commercial auto, general liability, cyber, medical malpractice, professional liability, surety bonds, commercial umbrella and workers’ compensation. 39,43,44,45,46,47,48,49,50,51

Mylo describes a business owner’s policy as combining general liability, commercial property and business-interruption coverage. The actual causes of loss, property, locations, limits and interruption period depend on the offered policy. 39,43

Mylo’s commercial-auto page describes bodily-injury and property-damage liability, with collision, comprehensive and non-owned-auto coverage as possible components depending on the business and vehicles. 44

For medical professionals, Mylo markets claims-made and occurrence malpractice policies and says tail coverage can extend reporting under a claims-made policy. Its page treats cyber liability as separate coverage to add rather than a protection supplied by malpractice insurance alone. 47

Mylo markets small-group benefits to employers with 2–99 employees, including health, dental, vision, life, disability, accident and critical-illness options. It describes online or phone enrollment, a year-round HR portal and help from a licensed benefits advisor. 52

The reviewed public product pages do not provide current specimen policies, endorsements or a complete schedule of limits, deductibles, exclusions and state variations. Those terms must be checked in the actual quote and policy forms. 39,47,41

Access to insurers

HUB’s compensation page says it has access to the products and services of hundreds of insurers and that it focuses on a smaller set of “Strategic Carriers,” which may pay enhanced compensation. Property, casualty and marine pages refer to domestic, national, regional, specialty and global carrier relationships without publishing a complete appointment list. ProEx says it places more than $2 billion of premium with top-rated insurance carriers; that volume and rating language is company-reported and does not name the carriers. Issuing insurers therefore have to be taken from a quote, not from the public catalogue. 7,19,27,28,16

Insureon says it has access to 100+ insurance providers and names The Hartford, Chubb, Hiscox, Liberty Mutual and Travelers as examples. Those names are Insureon’s examples for its digital agency, not a statement that every HUB retail placement uses the same insurers, and they do not identify the issuing company on a particular policy. 34

Mylo says its commercial brokerage works with more than 40 carrier partners and names Travelers, Liberty Mutual, The Hartford and Hiscox as examples. That panel does not establish which insurers will consider or quote a particular business. 39,42

Mylo’s public pages do not provide a complete product-and-state schedule of issuing insurers. The carrier contact directory names companies used for some customers, but the legal insurer for each proposed policy must be confirmed in the quote and policy documents. 39,42,41

Fees and compensation

HUB’s How We Get Paid page says it is compensated primarily through insurer-paid commissions included in premium, and also through contingent income, guaranteed supplemental commissions, and, on some complex programs, client-paid fees disclosed in a proposal, sometimes in addition to commission. It owns wholesale brokerages that may earn a second commission when HUB retail uses them. It may receive fees for de-identified data under insurer consulting agreements, premium-finance administration, interest on fiduciary accounts, and policy or claims administration. Strategic Carriers may pay enhanced compensation, part of which may incentivize employees to prioritize those markets. No schedule of commission percentages or standard fees is published. 7

Mylo says its guided shopping service is free and that 95% of customers do not pay Mylo a fee when purchasing. It generally earns a carrier commission; in fewer than 5% of transactions, it says it charges a fee when it handles billing and incurs higher administrative costs. The reviewed disclosure does not give the fee amount. 40
