CFC vs
HUB International
Compare a CFC technology placement with HUB’s brokerage and small-commercial routing for a founder choosing how to buy insurance.
Introduction
A founder looking for a first technology policy may reach a specialist product through an existing broker or ask a brokerage to organize the purchase. CFC and HUB sit at those different points: CFC markets technology underwriting products, while HUB markets technology-company brokerage. They could occupy different roles in a program, although the reviewed sources do not establish a HUB-to-CFC placement arrangement. 5 1 39
Where Each Provider Shines
Where CFC Shines
Where HUB International Shines
- HUB’s technology practice markets insurance and benefits programs to startups and software, hardware and digital-media companies, and says it currently insures more than 5,000 technology companies. 39
- HUB routes qualifying small commercial accounts to Insureon’s online quote and other business insurance to a HUB advisor or local office; there is no published self-serve bind path for mid-market programs on hubinternational.com. 37,40,41,42,39,35

Key Differences Between CFC and HUB International
HUB’s Entry Route Depends on the Size of the Inquiry
HUB’s contact flow sends businesses with 50 employees or fewer or under $5 million in revenue toward Insureon’s online quote. Other commercial inquiries go to a HUB team or office. CFC Connect is a broker portal with an appointment process; its technology application is returned to a broker. These are different access paths, not evidence of different binding speeds. 37 6 3
Insureon is part of HUB, and TechInsurance describes itself as part of Insureon. Comparing HUB, Insureon and TechInsurance inquiries therefore does not automatically create three independent brokerage relationships. Ask which legal entity and account team would represent the business before counting how many markets have been approached. 63 64 66
A Technology Product and a Technology Account Plan Answer Different Questions
CFC’s technology brochure describes combined E&O, cyber, media/IP and general liability features. HUB’s technology practice lists insurance and people-related needs, including technology E&O, D&O, workers’ compensation and benefits. The meaningful comparison is the CFC policy proposal against the specific policies HUB obtains, with HUB’s additional coordination work evaluated separately. 2 39
Do not read HUB’s unusual “patent package” label as proof of patent infringement insurance: the reviewed public documentation scopes that label to a property, auto, liability and umbrella grouping. CFC separately markets an IP product, which likewise needs its own terms rather than assumptions based on a technology package’s media/IP wording. 39 14
Brokerage Economics Require an Account-Level Explanation
HUB discloses commissions, possible client fees, affiliate wholesale compensation and enhanced compensation from strategic carriers. That disclosure helps frame questions about market selection; it does not establish the cost of a startup’s account. The reviewed CFC sources do not publish an equivalent buyer fee or commission schedule, so a CFC proposal also needs an itemized explanation from the placing broker. 36
The reviewed U.S. technology brochure, application and Connect page do not disclose a buyer-specific premium, producer commission rate, broker fee or complete schedule of policy charges. Request a written breakdown of premium, taxes, fees and intermediary compensation before purchase. 2,3,6
HUB’s San Francisco presence is not proof of the contracting producer or California product availability. CFC’s disclosed California producer route also leaves the technology product and issuer unresolved. Name those entities in the proposal rather than relying on either brand’s geographic presence. 34 30 4
What to Confirm in Quotes
- Will the account be handled by a HUB office or Insureon, and which legal entity, broker-of-record agreement and service team apply?
- Which actual technology forms and insurers are being compared, and is patent coverage being requested explicitly?
- What retail, wholesale, carrier-related and client-paid compensation applies, and what servicing is included?
Service Comparison
CFC vs HUB International: documented services and availability
| Criteria | CFC | HUB International |
|---|---|---|
| Business role | CFC is a specialist insurance provider operating an MGA model: a managing general agent performs underwriting functions for insurance capacity providers. Its disclosures identify CFC Underwriting Limited and the U.S. producer CFC USA, Inc.; the CFC brand should not be treated as the name of every policy’s insurer. 5,4 | HUB International Limited describes itself as a full-service insurance broker and financial-services firm. Its website terms say HUB’s subsidiaries are licensed as insurance brokers or agents in various U.S. states and Canadian provinces. The reviewed product pages market brokerage of policies issued by insurers, not HUB as a risk-bearing carrier for those policies. 33,34,38 HUB’s About Us timeline states that in 2022 it acquired Insureon for digital delivery of small-business commercial insurance. Insureon and TechInsurance say they are part of HUB; Insureon says it operates as a division of Specialty Program Group LLC, doing business as SPG Insurance Solutions. TechInsurance describes itself as part of Insureon rather than as a separate HUB retail office. 33,63,64,65,66 |
| Application process | The U.S. technology application asks a senior staff member to complete it and return it to the company’s insurance broker. It requests revenue, funding, subsidiaries, products, major contracts, security controls, IP procedures and claims history. CFC’s Connect portal separately supports broker trading and describes a broker appointment process. 3,6 | On hubinternational.com, commercial buyers are asked to contact a broker, connect with a specialist, or use Contact Us. Small-commercial inquiries meeting HUB’s stated size tests go to Insureon for an online quote. Product pages such as general liability, D&O, cyber and workers’ compensation use “Contact Us” or “Connect With a Broker” rather than an on-site bind flow. Privacy policy language refers to automation for insurance quoting, without documenting a public HUB retail e-commerce checkout for mid-market programs. 37,40,41,42,39,35 |
| Access to insurers | CFC’s regulatory page identifies Lloyd’s Syndicate 1988, managed by Asta Managing Agency Ltd. The reviewed U.S. technology materials do not name the insurer or participating syndicates for a California buyer’s actual policy; ask for those names on the quote and declarations. 4,2,3 | HUB’s compensation page says it has access to the products and services of hundreds of insurers and that it focuses on a smaller set of “Strategic Carriers,” which may pay enhanced compensation. Property, casualty and marine pages refer to domestic, national, regional, specialty and global carrier relationships without publishing a complete appointment list. ProEx says it places more than $2 billion of premium with top-rated insurance carriers; that volume and rating language is company-reported and does not name the carriers. Issuing insurers therefore have to be taken from a quote, not from the public catalogue. 36,48,56,57,45 Insureon says it has access to 100+ insurance providers and names The Hartford, Chubb, Hiscox, Liberty Mutual and Travelers as examples. Those names are Insureon’s examples for its digital agency, not a statement that every HUB retail placement uses the same insurers, and they do not identify the issuing company on a particular policy. 63 |
| Fees and compensation | The reviewed U.S. technology brochure, application and Connect page do not disclose a buyer-specific premium, producer commission rate, broker fee or complete schedule of policy charges. Request a written breakdown of premium, taxes, fees and intermediary compensation before purchase. 2,3,6 | HUB’s How We Get Paid page says it is compensated primarily through insurer-paid commissions included in premium, and also through contingent income, guaranteed supplemental commissions, and, on some complex programs, client-paid fees disclosed in a proposal, sometimes in addition to commission. It owns wholesale brokerages that may earn a second commission when HUB retail uses them. It may receive fees for de-identified data under insurer consulting agreements, premium-finance administration, interest on fiduciary accounts, and policy or claims administration. Strategic Carriers may pay enhanced compensation, part of which may incentivize employees to prioritize those markets. No schedule of commission percentages or standard fees is published. 36 |
