HUB International vs Pie Insurance

Why Pie Insurance’s workers’ compensation focus is not a replacement for HUB International’s multi-line brokerage, and how pay-as-you-go payroll reporting differs from a full HUB program.

Introduction

Pie Insurance and HUB International both sell or arrange workers’ compensation—the statutory coverage that pays employees for work-related injuries. Pie’s public model is workers’ compensation first, with partner products around it, and Pie documents that it discontinued commercial auto. HUB brokers workers’ compensation as one line among property, casualty, management liability and benefits. Pie’s published workers’ compensation focus is not a full directors and officers (D&O), cyber or employee-benefits program on the pages reviewed here; HUB markets those brokerage lines separately. The buyer question is whether you want Pie’s payroll-reporting payment style for workers’ compensation while placing other lines elsewhere, or one broker for several lines. 39 41 17 9

Where Each Provider Shines

Where HUB International Shines

  • HUB’s technology practice markets insurance and benefits programs to startups and software, hardware and digital-media companies, and says it currently insures more than 5,000 technology companies. 10
  • HUB routes qualifying small commercial accounts to Insureon’s online quote and other business insurance to a HUB advisor or local office; there is no published self-serve bind path for mid-market programs on hubinternational.com. 8,11,12,13,10,6

Where Pie Insurance Shines

  • Small businesses can start a workers’ compensation quote directly online or through an insurance agent. 40,39,41
  • Workers’ compensation payment options include pay-as-you-go using reported payroll, with no initial deposit. 55,56

Key Differences Between HUB International and Pie Insurance

Specialist Carrier Channel Versus Broker

Pie Insurance specializes in workers’ compensation that small businesses can start online or through partners. 39 41 HUB brokers workers’ compensation among many other lines and is not Pie’s issuing carrier. 4 17

Pie names how its workers’ compensation is issued. HUB places workers’ compensation with insurers it does not publish as a complete panel. An unnamed HUB market is not the same as “no insurer.” 40 27

Pay-As-You-Go Versus Annual Broker Billing

Pie documents payment plans that can follow reported payroll (pay-as-you-go), plus credit-card and waiver fees. HUB discloses commissions and possible client fees without a public pay-as-you-go product sheet. If cash timing on payroll is the pain point, ask HUB whether any of its markets offer a similar reporting endorsement rather than assuming they do not. 44 7

Geography

Pie publishes workers’ compensation availability that is not automatically nationwide, plus partner-product geography. HUB lists California offices without turning them into product maps. Confirm California workers’ compensation on both quotes. 49 3

Claims

Pie describes claims reporting and handling for its workers’ compensation. HUB’s claims practice covers multiple lines. A workplace injury still goes to the workers’ compensation insurer, not to HUB’s cyber claims team. 39 32

What to Confirm in Quotes

  • Whether other needed lines stay with HUB/Insureon while Pie writes only workers’ compensation. 45 8

  • Payroll reporting method, audit and credit-card fees. 43 17

  • Discontinued Pie commercial auto if you still need hired/non-owned or fleet coverage. 39 20

Service Comparison

HUB International vs Pie Insurance: documented services and availability

CriteriaHUB InternationalPie Insurance
Business role

HUB International Limited describes itself as a full-service insurance broker and financial-services firm. Its website terms say HUB’s subsidiaries are licensed as insurance brokers or agents in various U.S. states and Canadian provinces. The reviewed product pages market brokerage of policies issued by insurers, not HUB as a risk-bearing carrier for those policies. 4,5,9

HUB’s About Us timeline states that in 2022 it acquired Insureon for digital delivery of small-business commercial insurance. Insureon and TechInsurance say they are part of HUB; Insureon says it operates as a division of Specialty Program Group LLC, doing business as SPG Insurance Solutions. TechInsurance describes itself as part of Insureon rather than as a separate HUB retail office. 4,34,35,36,37

Pie Insurance is a small-business commercial insurance group whose producer, Pie Insurance Services, sells and administers policies. Its affiliated carriers write workers’ compensation, while selected other products are offered through outside carrier partners. 40,43,41,45,46,47,48

Pie Group Holdings, Inc. owns the public website and is the regulator-listed parent of Pie Casualty Insurance Company. AM Best identifies the rated carrier group as Pie Insurance Group. 42,62,60

Pie identifies Pie Insurance Services, Inc. as the licensed producer that sells and administers policies; its legal page publishes state licenses but is not a substitute for a current regulator lookup in the buyer’s state. 43,63

Coverage lines

HUB publishes dedicated business-insurance product pages for, among other lines, general liability, commercial property, workers’ compensation, business owners policies, commercial auto (including hired and non-owned exposures and trucking), cyber, directors and officers, professional liability/E&O, crime, fiduciary liability, kidnap and ransom, surety bonds, medical malpractice, marine/inland marine and cargo, boiler and machinery/equipment breakdown, and mergers-and-acquisitions representations-and-warranties insurance. Its casualty page also lists product liability, umbrella and excess, and product-recall as program elements. Employee-benefits brokerage is marketed separately. Actual policy forms, limits and eligibility are not set by those marketing pages. 9,11,19,17,18,20,13,12,14,15,21,22,23,24,25,28,29,26,27,30,16

For technology companies, HUB lists professional liability/technology E&O, cyber, a patent package described as property, auto, liability and umbrella, international placements, cargo/stock throughput, property/builders risk, pollution liability, management liability including D&O, employment-practices liability, fiduciary liability, transactional/warranty insurance, crime, workers’ compensation, employee benefits, key-person life and disability, retirement solutions, and kidnap and ransom. 10

Current direct offering pages support workers’ compensation, business owner’s policy, cyber, general liability and professional liability/E&O. The non-workers’ compensation pages describe typical protection; the issued policy and endorsements determine actual coverage. 41,45,46,48,47,42

Pie says it stopped accepting commercial-auto submissions on December 1, 2025 and will issue no new or renewal commercial-auto policies on or after January 1, 2026. Existing policyholders retain coverage through their policy term and can still use Pie’s claim channels. 52,58

Pie’s terms say website coverage descriptions are not part of an insurance contract and do not change a policy or endorsement; eligibility and product availability can vary by geography and applicant. 42

Application process

On hubinternational.com, commercial buyers are asked to contact a broker, connect with a specialist, or use Contact Us. Small-commercial inquiries meeting HUB’s stated size tests go to Insureon for an online quote. Product pages such as general liability, D&O, cyber and workers’ compensation use “Contact Us” or “Connect With a Broker” rather than an on-site bind flow. Privacy policy language refers to automation for insurance quoting, without documenting a public HUB retail e-commerce checkout for mid-market programs. 8,11,12,13,10,6

A small business can start a workers’ compensation quote on Pie’s website or work through an insurance agent; appointed agencies use a separate partner portal. 40,39,41

The live direct quote starts with the business ZIP code. Pie’s workers’ compensation page says applicants also need their name, business name, annual payroll and class-code information. 44,41

Pie advertises an online workers’ compensation quote in about three minutes, while expressly stating that individual quote times vary. This is a company claim and does not establish how long underwriting or binding will take for a particular risk. 41,39

Fees and compensation

HUB’s How We Get Paid page says it is compensated primarily through insurer-paid commissions included in premium, and also through contingent income, guaranteed supplemental commissions, and, on some complex programs, client-paid fees disclosed in a proposal, sometimes in addition to commission. It owns wholesale brokerages that may earn a second commission when HUB retail uses them. It may receive fees for de-identified data under insurer consulting agreements, premium-finance administration, interest on fiduciary accounts, and policy or claims administration. Strategic Carriers may pay enhanced compensation, part of which may incentivize employees to prioritize those markets. No schedule of commission percentages or standard fees is published. 7

Published workers’ compensation options include annual, semi-annual, quarterly and monthly schedules, plus pay-as-you-go. The monthly schedule requires 16.6% upfront followed by ten monthly payments; pay-as-you-go uses reported payroll and no initial deposit. 55,56

Pie publishes a 3% credit-card convenience fee for new, single-state workers’ compensation policies, except in Florida, Nebraska, Maryland and Rhode Island. Its page does not describe this fee for multi-state or renewal policies. 55

Pie says each specific or blanket waiver-of-subrogation request carries a charge set by state rules and disclosed individually; the public FAQ does not give a dollar schedule. 54

Pie says partner agents receive commissions on new and renewal workers’ compensation policies, and its legal footer says compensation rates can vary among insurers. The reviewed current pages do not publish the standard rate or the amount attached to a buyer’s policy. 59,43

Claims assistance

HUB markets a claims-management practice that it says includes dedicated claims professionals, advocacy, coverage-dispute support, TPA selection and audits, reserve analysis and litigation-management support. It states the team has more than 225 claims professionals in the United States and Canada. The page also publishes numerical process claims such as 24-hour turnaround on claims reporting; those figures are company-reported marketing metrics, not independently verified outcomes, and they do not describe how a particular insurer will adjust a claim. 32

Pie asks policyholders to report a workplace injury within 24 hours through its online form, 24/7 phone line or email. After intake, it says a claims professional follows up, determines whether the policy covers the claim and explains applicable benefits if accepted. 58

Pie’s agency FAQ says Pie manages workers’ compensation claims in 34 states and CorVel handles Alaska, Mississippi, Nevada, New Mexico and Oregon. That 39-state split is not reconciled with the separately advertised 40-state-plus-D.C. footprint. 59,49,60
