HUB International vs TechInsurance

Choosing between HUB’s advisor route and its related TechInsurance digital agency as a technology business grows.

Introduction

A technology founder considering a local HUB team and TechInsurance should first recognize the corporate connection. HUB routes qualifying small-commercial inquiries to Insureon; TechInsurance describes itself as part of that organization. The question is which team and service model will handle the account, not whether these are independent competing broker groups. 8 34 40

Where Each Provider Shines

Where HUB International Shines

  • HUB’s technology practice markets insurance and benefits programs to startups and software, hardware and digital-media companies, and says it currently insures more than 5,000 technology companies. 10
  • HUB routes qualifying small commercial accounts to Insureon’s online quote and other business insurance to a HUB advisor or local office; there is no published self-serve bind path for mid-market programs on hubinternational.com. 8,11,12,13,10,6

Where TechInsurance Shines

  • One application to compare multiple insurance quotes 40
  • Technology E&O and cyber coverage marketed together 45

Key Differences Between HUB International and TechInsurance

Routing Rules Do Not Define Insurance Eligibility

HUB’s contact page uses employee and revenue tests to direct small-commercial inquiries toward Insureon, while other commercial needs go to advisors or offices. Those are routing rules, not a promise of acceptance or a requirement that a growing company immediately move teams. TechInsurance’s single-application route is designed for comparing small-business insurer options. 8 40

Ask whether the proposed HUB conversation would reach the same digital operation, a different specialist team or a coordinated referral. If two teams approach insurers, agree who controls the submission and how existing applications are handled. Shared ownership does not establish shared access to every market or identical advice. 34 7

A Broader Assignment Needs an Explicit Service Scope

HUB’s technology practice markets business insurance and people-related coverages, and its risk services include claims-management and data tools. TechInsurance documents technology E&O/cyber, account-manager assistance and certificates, while its public pages leave complex-program commitments unresolved. For a company adding benefits, multiple entities or more demanding claims work, ask which team will own those tasks and what is separately engaged. 10 33 32 45 41

HUB’s published San Francisco office presence supports a local conversation, not California product eligibility. The parent record does not identify the contracting producer for every San Francisco engagement. TechInsurance names its SPG division; confirm whether a move to a HUB team changes that legal entity, the service agreement or only the assigned people. 1 5 47

Group Compensation Still Needs Account-Level Disclosure

HUB and TechInsurance’s linked SPG disclosure both describe commissions, possible client fees and strategic-carrier incentives. They do not establish identical charges on the two routes. Obtain the placement and service compensation specific to each proposal, including any affiliate or wholesale involvement. 7 48

A service transfer should also preserve insurer and policy information. Corporate affiliation does not make HUB the insurer, nor does it guarantee that a new team can renew every existing placement on unchanged terms. Ask for a transition schedule if the account is moving out of the digital route. 5 46

What to Confirm in Quotes

  • Which HUB or Insureon/SPG team will actually receive the inquiry, and are the two proposed routes reaching the same operation? 8 40
  • Name the California producer, insurers and tasks transferring, including any benefits or specialist risk-services assignment. 5 10 42
  • Request a service and compensation comparison within the group, with a single owner for market submissions and renewals. 7 48

HUB International vs TechInsurance: documented services and availability

CriteriaHUB InternationalTechInsurance
Business role

HUB International Limited describes itself as a full-service insurance broker and financial-services firm. Its website terms say HUB’s subsidiaries are licensed as insurance brokers or agents in various U.S. states and Canadian provinces. The reviewed product pages market brokerage of policies issued by insurers, not HUB as a risk-bearing carrier for those policies. 4,5,9

HUB’s About Us timeline states that in 2022 it acquired Insureon for digital delivery of small-business commercial insurance. Insureon and TechInsurance say they are part of HUB; Insureon says it operates as a division of Specialty Program Group LLC, doing business as SPG Insurance Solutions. TechInsurance describes itself as part of Insureon rather than as a separate HUB retail office. 4,34,35,36,37

TechInsurance is a small-business insurance agency and brokerage. Its legal disclosure identifies the business as a division of Specialty Program Group LLC, doing business in California as SPG Insurance Solutions. 41,47,48

TechInsurance describes itself as part of Insureon and HUB International. Its history says HUB acquired Insureon’s digital agency in 2022 while Bold Penguin acquired the technology platform; HUB’s acquisition announcement placed the agency operations within Specialty Program Group. 40,41,50

Customer focus

HUB’s San Francisco Mission Street office says its brokers work across commercial lines, personal lines and high-net-worth, and employee benefits, and names Bay Area industries including technology, venture capital, healthcare and life sciences, real estate and construction. The same page says the team helps startups navigate risk. That is office marketing, not a published eligibility list. 1,2

HUB’s technology-company page addresses fast-growing startups and established software, hardware or digital-media businesses. It lists a technology-specific mix that includes professional liability/technology E&O, cyber, D&O and other management liability, transactional/warranty insurance, workers’ compensation, employee benefits and key-person coverages. The page also claims more than 5,000 technology companies currently insured; that figure is company-reported and was not independently counted here. 10

HUB’s contact page says it supports small businesses through partner Insureon and directs companies with 50 employees or fewer or under $5 million in annual revenue to start with an online quote. Larger or other commercial needs are directed to HUB commercial-insurance teams or a local office search. Those thresholds are HUB’s routing rules, not a regulatory definition of small business. 8

TechInsurance markets to small businesses, including startups and freelancers, with a technology focus spanning software developers, SaaS companies, IT consultants and managed service providers. Its catalogue also serves traditional industries. 46,45

Application process

On hubinternational.com, commercial buyers are asked to contact a broker, connect with a specialist, or use Contact Us. Small-commercial inquiries meeting HUB’s stated size tests go to Insureon for an online quote. Product pages such as general liability, D&O, cyber and workers’ compensation use “Contact Us” or “Connect With a Broker” rather than an on-site bind flow. Privacy policy language refers to automation for insurance quoting, without documenting a public HUB retail e-commerce checkout for mid-market programs. 8,11,12,13,10,6

TechInsurance describes a single application for comparing multiple insurance quotes, followed by policy purchase and online coverage management, with licensed-agent guidance available. 40

TechInsurance’s account instructions warn that quotes may take time to appear after an application is submitted; an application is not confirmation of bound coverage. 41

Servicing and renewals

HUB describes ongoing servicing through local account teams (ProEx notes local policy review and certificates of insurance), a Risk Management Information System for claims administration, certificate tracking and carrier/TPA data, and employee-benefits work that includes multi-year cost planning and renewal support. RMIS is described as available in various tiers. None of those pages publish a standard service-level agreement or fee for those tools. 16,33,30

TechInsurance says it provides a dedicated account manager and online certificate access. Its instructions require an active policy for a certificate request and direct urgent requests to the account manager. 39,41

The reviewed About and Contact pages do not establish a renewal remarketing schedule, a contractual response-time commitment, or the scope of dedicated support for a complex growth-stage insurance program. 40,41

Fees and compensation

HUB’s How We Get Paid page says it is compensated primarily through insurer-paid commissions included in premium, and also through contingent income, guaranteed supplemental commissions, and, on some complex programs, client-paid fees disclosed in a proposal, sometimes in addition to commission. It owns wholesale brokerages that may earn a second commission when HUB retail uses them. It may receive fees for de-identified data under insurer consulting agreements, premium-finance administration, interest on fiduciary accounts, and policy or claims administration. Strategic Carriers may pay enhanced compensation, part of which may incentivize employees to prioritize those markets. No schedule of commission percentages or standard fees is published. 7

TechInsurance directs buyers to SPG’s compensation disclosure, which describes insurer commissions, contingent and supplemental payments, and possible negotiated client fees. Some placements may involve both commission and client-paid fees; quote-specific amounts are not disclosed there. 47,48

SPG discloses that strategic insurers may pay enhanced compensation and that some of it may incentivize employees to prioritize those insurers’ products. Ask which markets were approached and how the placement is compensated. 48
