What Is Beazley?

Understand Beazley’s technology, cyber and specialty insurance options, how placement works, and what California startups need to confirm.

Beazley is a specialty insurance group operating through insurance companies and underwriting businesses. Its US disclosures distinguish the insurance entities from Beazley USA Services, Inc., which reports doing business in California as Beazley Insurance Services under license 0G55497. This is a company disclosure, not an independently verified license record. 5,6,7

Beazley markets MediaTech to small technology and business-services companies. Its separate Virtual Care offering addresses digital-health businesses, while its Life Sciences page targets middle to large organizations. 1,13,14

For a founder or finance lead, the useful starting point is the work your company performs: selling software, delivering healthcare or manufacturing a product can lead to different insurance discussions. Beazley’s product distinctions make that scoping exercise especially relevant. 1 13 14

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Related technology risks can be considered together.

MediaTech combines technology and professional errors and omissions, media liability and cyber coverage. Beazley lists breach response, business interruption, dependent business interruption, extortion, data recovery and eCrime protections, with limits up to $5 million; the issued policy determines the cover purchased. 1

That gives a software business a concrete way to discuss customer-service failures alongside data incidents.

  • Executive coverage has a choice of limit structure.

Execuguard offers private-company directors and officers, employment practices and fiduciary liability, with separate or shared limits across selected coverages. Beazley advertises both admitted and non-admitted options; state and account eligibility still need confirmation. 10

Ask how a claim under one section would affect the amount available under another.

  • Healthcare has a dedicated product discussion.

Virtual Care lists healthcare professional liability, technology liability, cyber, media, general liability and products/completed operations for digital-health businesses. Life Sciences offers product, professional and general liability through BioSecure, NutraGuard and WellTech forms for different life-sciences exposures. 13,14

A digital-health founder can ask how clinical and technology exposures interact instead of assuming a software policy addresses both.

Cons

  • California MediaTech access remains unresolved.

The reviewed MediaTech product page, application and US legal disclosures do not establish a current California-specific MediaTech form, admitted or surplus-lines route, or applicant eligibility. A California trade-name and license disclosure alone does not answer those product questions. 1,2,5,6

Establish the placement route before relying on an application deadline for a customer contract.

  • The public form has material intellectual-property restrictions.

The linked MediaTech sample form is dated February 2019. It excludes patent infringement and trade-secret misappropriation related to technology or other products, and contains contractual-liability and retroactive-date restrictions. The sample is not evidence of the wording that will be offered today. 3,5

Treat an enterprise customer’s IP indemnity requirement as a wording question, not something settled by a media-liability label.

  • Defense spending can consume the liability limit.

The posted Digital Media Tech application says liability coverage is claims-made and reported: the claim must be made and reported within the applicable policy terms. It also warns that claims expenses reduce the liability limit and are subject to retentions. 2

Compare the amount available after defense costs, along with the retention you would fund yourself.

How It Works

Beazley describes MediaTech placement through third-party platforms or email. Its posted application requests the business’s services and products, employee count, US and non-US revenues, financial statements and expected business changes. A submitted application does not establish acceptance or an effective policy. 1,2

Use the application as preparation for a broker conversation. Describe both the software you sell and any implementation, consulting or managed services around it. If your company is pre-revenue or has no audited financial statements, ask which information the underwriter will accept; the posted form does not settle how those situations are handled. 2

The posted Digital Media Tech application names Beazley Insurance Company, Inc. Beazley’s broader disclosures also describe surplus-lines business through Beazley Excess and Surplus Insurance, Inc. or Beazley-managed Lloyd’s syndicates. The actual MediaTech insurer and California placement basis must be identified in the quote. 2,7

Request the proposed declarations, complete form and endorsements together. A brand name on the application is not enough to identify every party to the placement. The public legal terms themselves distinguish jurisdiction and policy wording from website descriptions. 5

Coverage and Availability

MediaTech is one part of the catalogue. When comparing quotes, separate the software and cyber package from policies addressing employees, directors, physical products or property. The following are separate documented offerings, not additions automatically included in MediaTech. 20

Beazley offers Commercial Crime for commercial companies and Financial Fidelity Bonds for financial institutions. Its crime page describes fraudulent-instruction coverage subject to out-of-band authentication, with possible removal of that condition for documented controls and an additional premium. 11

For finance teams, the authentication condition deserves an operational check: ask whether your payment-approval process satisfies the proposed wording. 11

North American Commercial Property targets mid-sized and large commercial properties on an excess and surplus lines basis. Product Recall – Manufacturing Risk and Response separately addresses consumer goods, component parts and consumables, including product-removal and related income-loss costs. 15,16

BeazleyOne Environmental combines general, professional and contractors’ pollution liability for environmental-service firms, and lists hired and non-owned auto. US Marine offers hull and marine liability on primary and excess bases; this does not establish general corporate umbrella availability. 17,18

These industry-specific offerings matter when reading the coverage list beside this article. A listed general-liability or excess offering does not mean the same program fits a software startup, an environmental contractor and a marine operator. 17 18

Beazley offers representations and warranties coverage for acquisitions. Its US Specialty Programs business works through managing general agents, program administrators and specialized brokers on professional, general, product, manufacturers’ E&O, cyber and allied-medical liability programs. 12,19

Beazley says its M&A team can underwrite and place transactions in all 50 US states. That company-reported statement includes California for M&A, but does not establish MediaTech availability or acceptance of a particular transaction. 12

For an acquisition, keep the transaction quote separate from the operating company’s annual insurance renewal. Do not carry a product’s geographic statement over to a different policy. 12 5

Service and Compensation

Beazley publishes a MediaTech renewal application. The reviewed renewal form and product page do not establish a guaranteed renewal, dedicated account manager, or turnaround commitment for policy changes. 4,1

Full Spectrum Cyber for small businesses combines Beazley Breach Response with security tools and services. Beazley describes incident-response coordination and discounted vendor services. Its myBeazley quote-and-bind route is for brokers handling accounts below $35 million in revenue and limits no higher than $5 million; these are cyber-route criteria, not MediaTech eligibility rules. 9

Ask which security services are included, which require a separate agreement or payment, and who coordinates an incident. A vendor discount and an insurance benefit are different items to evaluate. 9

Beazley directs customers to check their policy’s notification instructions first. Its website provides a notice-of-loss form and a US claims email route. The existence of these channels does not establish claims-handling quality or a promise that a loss is covered. 8

The reviewed MediaTech product page, application and US website terms do not disclose a buyer-specific premium, broker commission rate or fee schedule for a MediaTech placement. Obtain an itemized quote and the placing broker’s compensation disclosure. 1,2,6

What to Confirm in a Quote

  • California and contracting parties: Which producer is arranging this placement, which insurer is issuing it, and is the specific product offered on an admitted or surplus-lines basis for your California operations? Obtain the applicable form and endorsements. 6 5
  • Your actual work: Do the covered-services and product definitions capture software licensing, implementation, consulting and any clinical activity? Show the broker the description of work in your customer contracts. 2 13
  • IP and contractual promises: How do patent, trade-secret and contractual exclusions apply to the indemnities you give customers? Ask for a written explanation using the proposed wording. 3
  • Usable limits: Which sections share a limit, what are the sublimits and retentions, and do defense expenses reduce the amount left to pay a settlement? 2 10
  • Continuity as you grow: What is the retroactive date, how are acquired subsidiaries treated, and what notice is required when operations change? The posted sample makes these wording questions worth resolving before a financing or acquisition. 3
  • Total cost and ongoing help: Request premium, taxes, placement fees and broker compensation separately, plus named responsibility for endorsements, renewal preparation and incident notification. 2 4 8
