Beazley vs Pie Insurance

Compare Pie’s payroll-based workers’ compensation with Beazley technology coverage when a startup begins hiring.

Introduction

Hiring employees changes the insurance task even if the software product stays the same. Pie focuses on small-business workers’ compensation, including payroll-based payment options. Beazley’s MediaTech addresses technology, professional, media and cyber-related liabilities. A startup may need both discussions: the evidence does not make a technology liability package a replacement for workers’ compensation. 23 38 1

Key Differences Between Beazley and Pie Insurance

Payroll and Revenue Drive Different Questions

Pie asks for payroll and class-code information and offers pay-as-you-go payments based on reported payroll. It still requires an annual premium audit, which can change the final cost. Beazley’s MediaTech application asks about products, services and revenues. Keep the hiring forecast and sales forecast distinct: a payroll-linked installment does not settle the cost or scope of the technology policy. 23 38 39 2

For a remote team, confirm each work location and classification in the quote. Pie’s public state counts conflict, and its workers’ compensation footprint does not establish availability of its partner products. Beazley’s general US material does not resolve California MediaTech eligibility either. The operative answer must identify the product and locations together. 31 33 24 5

Buying More Lines Can Introduce Another Insurer

Pie offers cyber and professional-liability shopping through carrier partners; its public product pages do not identify the participating insurers. Its affiliated workers’ compensation carriers should not be assigned to those quotes. Beazley’s combined MediaTech description gives a different starting point for technology liability, but the current issuer and endorsements still need to be named. Compare any Pie partner proposal on its own wording. 25 28 29 1 2

Administration Splits Between Payroll and Incident Reporting

Pie describes workers’ compensation certificates, payment tools and state-specific claims handling. Beazley provides policy-first claims notification guidance. An employee injury and a customer’s software demand need separate reporting instructions even when one finance person administers both policies. Neither provider’s published workflow establishes claims quality. 35 41 8

What to Confirm in Quotes

  • Which payroll records and subcontractor certificates will the audit require, and what happens if hiring exceeds the forecast? 39
  • Who issues each cyber or professional-liability policy, and does it cover the actual software services? 29 2
  • Which card, waiver or broker charges apply, and who receives each type of claim notice? 37 36 8

Service Comparison

Beazley vs Pie Insurance: documented services and availability

CriteriaBeazleyPie Insurance
Business role

Beazley is a specialty insurance group operating through insurance companies and underwriting businesses. Its US disclosures distinguish the insurance entities from Beazley USA Services, Inc., which reports doing business in California as Beazley Insurance Services under license 0G55497. This is a company disclosure, not an independently verified license record. 5,6,7

Pie Insurance is a small-business commercial insurance group whose producer, Pie Insurance Services, sells and administers policies. Its affiliated carriers write workers’ compensation, while selected other products are offered through outside carrier partners. 22,25,23,27,28,29,30

Pie Group Holdings, Inc. owns the public website and is the regulator-listed parent of Pie Casualty Insurance Company. AM Best identifies the rated carrier group as Pie Insurance Group. 24,44,42

Pie identifies Pie Insurance Services, Inc. as the licensed producer that sells and administers policies; its legal page publishes state licenses but is not a substitute for a current regulator lookup in the buyer’s state. 25,45

Coverage lines

MediaTech combines technology and professional errors and omissions, media liability and cyber coverage. Beazley lists breach response, business interruption, dependent business interruption, extortion, data recovery and eCrime protections, with limits up to $5 million; the issued policy determines the cover purchased. 1

The linked MediaTech sample form is dated February 2019. It excludes patent infringement and trade-secret misappropriation related to technology or other products, and contains contractual-liability and retroactive-date restrictions. The sample is not evidence of the wording that will be offered today. 3,5

Execuguard offers private-company directors and officers, employment practices and fiduciary liability, with separate or shared limits across selected coverages. Beazley advertises both admitted and non-admitted options; state and account eligibility still need confirmation. 10

Beazley offers Commercial Crime for commercial companies and Financial Fidelity Bonds for financial institutions. Its crime page describes fraudulent-instruction coverage subject to out-of-band authentication, with possible removal of that condition for documented controls and an additional premium. 11

Virtual Care lists healthcare professional liability, technology liability, cyber, media, general liability and products/completed operations for digital-health businesses. Life Sciences offers product, professional and general liability through BioSecure, NutraGuard and WellTech forms for different life-sciences exposures. 13,14

North American Commercial Property targets mid-sized and large commercial properties on an excess and surplus lines basis. Product Recall – Manufacturing Risk and Response separately addresses consumer goods, component parts and consumables, including product-removal and related income-loss costs. 15,16

BeazleyOne Environmental combines general, professional and contractors’ pollution liability for environmental-service firms, and lists hired and non-owned auto. US Marine offers hull and marine liability on primary and excess bases; this does not establish general corporate umbrella availability. 17,18

Beazley offers representations and warranties coverage for acquisitions. Its US Specialty Programs business works through managing general agents, program administrators and specialized brokers on professional, general, product, manufacturers’ E&O, cyber and allied-medical liability programs. 12,19

The posted Digital Media Tech application says liability coverage is claims-made and reported: the claim must be made and reported within the applicable policy terms. It also warns that claims expenses reduce the liability limit and are subject to retentions. 2

Current direct offering pages support workers’ compensation, business owner’s policy, cyber, general liability and professional liability/E&O. The non-workers’ compensation pages describe typical protection; the issued policy and endorsements determine actual coverage. 23,27,28,30,29,24

Pie says it stopped accepting commercial-auto submissions on December 1, 2025 and will issue no new or renewal commercial-auto policies on or after January 1, 2026. Existing policyholders retain coverage through their policy term and can still use Pie’s claim channels. 34,40

Pie’s terms say website coverage descriptions are not part of an insurance contract and do not change a policy or endorsement; eligibility and product availability can vary by geography and applicant. 24

Fees and compensation

The reviewed MediaTech product page, application and US website terms do not disclose a buyer-specific premium, broker commission rate or fee schedule for a MediaTech placement. Obtain an itemized quote and the placing broker’s compensation disclosure. 1,2,6

Published workers’ compensation options include annual, semi-annual, quarterly and monthly schedules, plus pay-as-you-go. The monthly schedule requires 16.6% upfront followed by ten monthly payments; pay-as-you-go uses reported payroll and no initial deposit. 37,38

Pie publishes a 3% credit-card convenience fee for new, single-state workers’ compensation policies, except in Florida, Nebraska, Maryland and Rhode Island. Its page does not describe this fee for multi-state or renewal policies. 37

Pie says each specific or blanket waiver-of-subrogation request carries a charge set by state rules and disclosed individually; the public FAQ does not give a dollar schedule. 36

Pie says partner agents receive commissions on new and renewal workers’ compensation policies, and its legal footer says compensation rates can vary among insurers. The reviewed current pages do not publish the standard rate or the amount attached to a buyer’s policy. 41,25

Claims assistance

Beazley directs customers to check their policy’s notification instructions first. Its website provides a notice-of-loss form and a US claims email route. The existence of these channels does not establish claims-handling quality or a promise that a loss is covered. 8

Pie asks policyholders to report a workplace injury within 24 hours through its online form, 24/7 phone line or email. After intake, it says a claims professional follows up, determines whether the policy covers the claim and explains applicable benefits if accepted. 40

Pie’s agency FAQ says Pie manages workers’ compensation claims in 34 states and CorVel handles Alaska, Mississippi, Nevada, New Mexico and Oregon. That 39-state split is not reconciled with the separately advertised 40-state-plus-D.C. footprint. 41,31,42
