Beazley vs Coterie Insurance

Separate office-property insurance from software liability when comparing Coterie’s agent-distributed policies with Beazley MediaTech.

Introduction

A small consultancy leasing its first office may need protection for its premises and for errors in the software it delivers. Coterie markets a business owner’s policy (BOP), general liability and miscellaneous professional liability through agents. Beazley’s MediaTech addresses technology, professional, media and cyber risks. Those are potentially complementary purchases: an office package and a technology policy answer different questions. 22 24 1

Key Differences Between Beazley and Coterie Insurance

Ask the Agent to Separate Premises from Professional Work

Coterie is a managing general agency whose carrier partners issue policies; its dashboard is built for licensed agents rather than a consumer marketplace. Beazley describes MediaTech placement through platforms or email. A business owner should identify who will advise on the combination and submit each risk, rather than assuming either website is a complete brokerage engagement. 21 28 25 1

Coterie’s miscellaneous professional liability is for listed service professions. Beazley expressly markets technology services and products. For a consultancy that also licenses software, ask whether the selected professional class captures both activities. A generic E&O label does not settle the covered-services definition. 34 2

A Cyber Endorsement Is a Different Starting Point

Coterie markets cyber as an optional endorsement; MediaTech includes a described cyber component alongside technology and media liability. Compare the proposed breach-response, interruption and third-party sections with their own limits and triggers. The table’s absence of a standalone Coterie cyber line should not be read as absence of its endorsement, nor should the endorsement be treated as equivalent to every MediaTech section. 32 35 1

Beazley’s general-liability and property catalogue entries also need context: the documented GL packages include environmental and healthcare risks, while commercial property targets mid-sized and large accounts. They are not evidence of a general small-office BOP matching Coterie’s offering. 17 13 15 33

Expansion Changes Location and Payment Questions

Coterie’s policyholder FAQ says each business location needs its own policy. Its terms disclose policy and installment fees, and a possible risk-program fee. A second office therefore creates both a servicing question and a reason to request a new itemized total; the public descriptions do not price that expansion. Beazley’s MediaTech materials do not supply comparable buyer fees or a California-specific placement confirmation. 30 28 2 6 5

What to Confirm in Quotes

  • Have the agent mark which contract covers the leased premises, business equipment, consulting work and licensed software. 33 34 2
  • Request the actual cyber endorsement or MediaTech sections, with sublimits and incident-response instructions. 35 1
  • Confirm professional-class eligibility and every location. Coterie’s sources conflict on nationwide MPL availability, and general US marketing does not settle Beazley’s California MediaTech route. 25 27 34 5

Service Comparison

Beazley vs Coterie Insurance: documented services and availability

CriteriaBeazleyCoterie Insurance
Business role

Beazley is a specialty insurance group operating through insurance companies and underwriting businesses. Its US disclosures distinguish the insurance entities from Beazley USA Services, Inc., which reports doing business in California as Beazley Insurance Services under license 0G55497. This is a company disclosure, not an independently verified license record. 5,6,7

Coterie Insurance is a managing general agency and digital small-business insurance platform built primarily for licensed agents, brokers and distribution partners. It is not a direct-to-consumer insurance marketplace; a business owner is directed to work with an agent. 21,26,39

Coterie Applications, Inc. provides the platform under the website terms. Florida's current corporate record lists it as the member of Coterie Insurance Agency, LLC, the agency named in Coterie's footer; Massachusetts separately lists the agency with an active property-and-casualty producer license through December 28, 2026. 28,21,42,43

Coterie's website lists multiple investors, and Allianz X records Coterie as a current direct investment after leading a 2025 Series C round. The reviewed sources do not establish an acquisition, a controlling parent or Coterie's complete current ownership table. 21,39,40,42

Application process

Beazley describes MediaTech placement through third-party platforms or email. Its posted application requests the business’s services and products, employee count, US and non-US revenues, financial statements and expected business changes. A submitted application does not establish acceptance or an effective policy. 1,2

A licensed agent starts a quote in Coterie's dashboard with the client's business name and address, selects the principal industry, confirms or edits prefilled details, customizes coverage and pays to bind an eligible policy. Business owners who do not already have an agent can use Coterie's agent finder. 25,26,22

Coterie advertises bindable quotes in under two minutes for eligible standard risks. Its terms qualify that claim: a quote or estimate is not an insurance contract, and coverage remains subject to underwriting approval, eligibility verification and formal policy issuance. 26,28

Availability

The reviewed MediaTech product page, application and US legal disclosures do not establish a current California-specific MediaTech form, admitted or surplus-lines route, or applicant eligibility. A California trade-name and license disclosure alone does not answer those product questions. 1,2,5,6

Beazley says its M&A team can underwrite and place transactions in all 50 US states. That company-reported statement includes California for M&A, but does not establish MediaTech availability or acceptance of a particular transaction. 12

Coterie says BOP and general liability are admitted products across all 50 states. That is not account-level availability: its terms make every product subject to jurisdiction, business class, underwriting and formal issuance, and temporary catastrophe moratoriums can stop new BOP binding in specified areas. 27,28,38

Coterie's broad broker page says BOP, general liability and professional liability are admitted in all 50 states, but its December 2025 MPL guide says MPL is unavailable in DC, Illinois, Massachusetts, Montana, North Dakota and Virginia. A newer quick-start page narrows the statement to BOP and general liability in all 50 states and MPL in most states. Use the product guide and a current quote for MPL eligibility. 25,27,34

As of September 11, 2026, Coterie says eligible BOP risks 3 to 26 miles from the coast can be considered in Florida, Texas, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina, generally with up to $250,000 of business personal property and no building coverage in the coastal zone. Risks closer than 3 miles remain ineligible under this expansion, and Florida building coverage is unavailable statewide. 37,38

Fees and compensation

The reviewed MediaTech product page, application and US website terms do not disclose a buyer-specific premium, broker commission rate or fee schedule for a MediaTech placement. Obtain an itemized quote and the placing broker’s compensation disclosure. 1,2,6

Coterie's terms say new and renewal policies have a one-time policy fee whose amount varies, successful installments carry a $7 fee, late fees can be up to $10 and insufficient-funds fees up to $35. Fees vary by state and line, can be nonrefundable, and additional charges must be disclosed before bind or renewal. 28

A Coterie policy can include a separate Manage My Risk Program fee that the terms call fully earned on payment and nonrefundable after midterm cancellation. The terms say participation, or an accepted outside risk program, affects the insurance premium but do not publish the program fee amount. 28

Coterie's privacy policy says it may pay commissions to certain agents through a third-party processor. The reviewed public sources do not state the commission rate or whether additional producer compensation applies to a particular buyer's policy. 29,28

Servicing and renewals

Beazley publishes a MediaTech renewal application. The reviewed renewal form and product page do not establish a guaranteed renewal, dedicated account manager, or turnaround commitment for policy changes. 4,1

Full Spectrum Cyber for small businesses combines Beazley Breach Response with security tools and services. Beazley describes incident-response coordination and discounted vendor services. Its myBeazley quote-and-bind route is for brokers handling accounts below $35 million in revenue and limits no higher than $5 million; these are cyber-route criteria, not MediaTech eligibility rules. 9

Policyholders can use My Policy Center, request policy changes, generate certificates and start a claim online. Coterie tells policyholders to use their agent or broker first for coverage questions and provides public sample BOP, general liability and professional liability forms for orientation. 30,28

Coterie's policyholder FAQ says each business location must have its own policy rather than listing several operating addresses on one Coterie policy. 30

Unless a policy says otherwise, Coterie's terms describe a 12-month policy that may renew automatically. Renewal charges may use the payment method on file, and the policyholder can contact Coterie or use account tools to change renewal preferences. 28
