What Is Layr?

How Layr’s broker-facing small-business insurance platform handles quotes, coverage, service, renewals and compensation.

Layr provides insurance workflow software and licensed support for independent brokerages serving small-commercial accounts. Policyholders use a broker-branded experience rather than necessarily buying from a storefront carrying the Layr name. 2,3,5

For a business buyer, that means the Layr technology and service team may sit behind the insurance agency you already know. The proposal and policy still need to identify the legal producer and the insurance company taking the risk. 2 6

Pros And Cons

Pros

  • The broker can retain the client relationship. Layr says its brokerage customer remains broker of record and keeps its commissions while Layr handles sales, service and support. A business can therefore receive a digital experience without necessarily changing the brokerage named on the account. The actual division of duties still belongs in the brokerage agreement and service contacts. 2
  • The service covers more than a quote form. Current materials describe policy documents, payments, certificates, claims activity and renewals in the portal, with licensed support available when a policyholder needs help. Those functions give buyers concrete account-service capabilities to confirm with their broker. 5 12
  • Layr can work with a brokerage’s existing carrier relationships. The FAQ says Layr can use the broker’s current carriers, connect with national insurers and access other markets through wholesalers. That flexibility may help a brokerage move an existing small-business book without replacing every market relationship. It does not guarantee a quote from any named insurer. 6
  • Renewal work has a documented workflow. Layr says it alerts policyholders, gathers updated information, negotiates with underwriters and finalizes renewal documents. Buyers can use that outline to agree on responsibilities and deadlines before renewal season. 6

Cons

  • A buyer cannot establish a complete market search from the public site. Layr does not publish a current legal-entity carrier panel, the markets approached for a particular applicant or the insurer and policy form behind each product. Those details must come with the proposal. 6 7
  • The publicly visible product catalogue is limited and partly historical. The current New Business Capture material shows six coverage choices, while a broader 2021-branded referral page has mostly broken product links. Buyers with management liability, professional E&O, crime, kidnap and ransom or hired and non-owned auto needs should confirm that a current standalone product is actually available rather than relying on the older list. 4 13
  • The public compensation descriptions do not align cleanly. The current broker FAQ describes a premium-based payment to Layr with the broker retaining commissions; another disclosure says carriers pay Layr commissions and businesses can pay a finance fee of up to 20% of premium. A buyer and broker need an itemized explanation for their arrangement. 6 8
  • “Hands-free” automatic renewal needs controls. Layr says it notifies the customer and handles auto-renew policies, but the reviewed FAQ does not state the opt-out method or notice deadline. A policyholder who requires approval before renewal should agree on that process in writing. 6

How It Works

The Brokerage Starts The Relationship

Layr says a participating brokerage can offload small-business sales, service and support to Layr while retaining broker-of-record status and 100% of its commissions. 2,6

The policyholder-facing phone number, email address and portal can carry the brokerage’s brand. Layr’s own site is therefore aimed at brokers and asks them to schedule a demonstration; it is not a complete public shopping interface where every business can compare the platform’s terms without a partner. 6 1

Applying And Reaching Underwriting

Layr describes an online workflow in which a small-business owner assesses and selects coverage, pays, and then has the submission sent to underwriting. Current pages use different speed claims—10 minutes on New Business Capture and 12 minutes in a 2024 announcement—so neither figure establishes the time to receive or bind an actual quote. 4,11

Submitting information to underwriting is not the same as receiving a binding offer. Ask who reviews the application, when coverage can take effect and which documents confirm that it is bound. 11

Layr, The Broker And The Insurer

Layr Holdings, Inc. operates withlayr.com and markets the Layr Apex platform and licensed support service. Public materials describe Layr handling sales, service and support while its brokerage customer keeps the broker-of-record relationship; they do not identify Layr as the insurer underwriting every policy. 9,1,2,5

The reviewed sources identify Layr Holdings, Inc., its leaders and several investors, but do not disclose a current controlling parent or ownership percentages. 9,10,12

Layr says it works with major national insurers, accesses other markets through wholesalers and can use a brokerage customer's existing carriers. It does not publish a current legal-entity carrier panel or promise that every market will quote every account. 6

The reviewed current product, portal and FAQ pages do not identify the issuing insurer or policy form for each available product. Those details must come from the actual proposal and policy. 4,7,6

Coverage And Availability

The Current Public Catalogue

Layr's current New Business Capture illustration shows general liability, commercial auto liability, commercial property, workers' compensation, umbrella and cyber liability/data breach as policy choices. The illustration is a product demonstration, not a guarantee that all six are eligible in every broker implementation or jurisdiction. 4

Commercial auto differs from hired and non-owned auto, which addresses vehicles the business uses but does not own. Umbrella is shown as a broad product label; the attachment point and policies it can sit over require the actual proposal. 4

Cyber Is The Documented Specialty Offering

Layr maintains a dedicated cyber liability page describing first- and third-party cyber coverage and two example coverage options. The page does not identify the insurer, form edition or state availability, so its feature table should be checked against the proposed wording. 7

The published feature table mentions incident-response costs, business interruption, fraud and liability features, but a check mark on a marketing page cannot establish definitions, sublimits, waiting periods or exclusions. Request the applicable specimen and endorsements before comparing it with another cyber policy. 7

Broader Legacy Labels Need Confirmation

A still-live, 2021-branded Parcel Pro referral page also lists a business owner's policy, commercial crime, hired and non-owned auto and kidnap and ransom, and mentions management liability and errors and omissions. Most linked product pages now return 404, so these legacy/referral-page labels are not treated as confirmed current standalone offerings in this profile's coverage catalogue. 13,7

Layr says it can add products for a brokerage, so available products can depend on the partner. 6

States And Product Eligibility

Layr has described brokerage customers across the United States, but the reviewed sources do not provide a product-by-state eligibility table. A national broker audience does not establish that a specific insurer, form or coverage is available in every state. 11,4,6

A Massachusetts Division of Insurance agency-list result indexed in 2026 included Layr Holdings, Inc. with license 17853851 and a 17 March 2027 renewal date. The direct PDF download returned 404 during this review, so current status and authority should be confirmed with the regulator before relying on the entry. 14

That limited regulatory result does not verify Layr’s authority in the buyer’s state, the appointed producer on a white-labeled account or the availability of any coverage line. Check each legal producer and proposed insurer with the relevant state regulator. 14

Service And Compensation

Portal And Account Service

Layr markets a white-labeled portal with licensed support and broker dashboard updates for policies, renewals, claims and payments. A company release also describes policyholder access to documents, quotes, claims, certificates, bills and electronic payments. 5,12

Because the policyholder interface can be white-labeled, save both the broker’s and the insurer’s contact information. Establish which requests Layr can complete directly, which need carrier approval and where a time-sensitive notice must go. 5 6

Renewals

Layr says its team gathers updates, negotiates renewal terms with underwriters and finalizes renewal documents. It describes automatic-renewal policies as hands-free and says customers whose policies need updated information are alerted 60 days before renewal. 6

The 60-day contact point is a stated information-gathering step, not a promise that terms will be available then. Confirm how the team records changes, what happens if the insured does not respond and who authorizes binding. 6

Claims Assistance

Layr's current portal materials describe claims activity, online claim functions and help from its licensed support team. They do not establish that Layr is the risk-bearing insurer or replace the notice requirements in the policy. 5,12

Claims support and claim payment are different roles. Obtain the insurer or administrator’s notice instructions, including any urgent cyber contact, and do not assume a portal entry alone satisfies the policy’s reporting deadline. 5 7

Compensation And Monthly Payments

Layr's current broker FAQ says Layr receives a percentage of premium while the brokerage keeps 100% of commissions. A separate consumer-facing disclosure says carriers pay Layr a commission and businesses may pay a finance fee of up to 20% of premium. The pages do not reconcile which arrangement applies to a particular broker, policyholder or payment plan. 6,8

Layr's consumer-facing compensation disclosure says a business that uses its monthly credit-card payment arrangement can pay a percentage-based finance fee of up to 20% of premium. The page does not provide an account-specific rate, total repayment or cancellation terms. 8

An “up to” fee does not establish the charge for a particular policy. Request a total that separates premium, taxes, broker or platform charges and financing, together with the payment schedule and consequences of cancellation. 8

What To Confirm In A Proposal

  • Who performs each legal role. Identify the broker of record, every licensed producer involved, the wholesaler if one is used and the insurer issuing each policy or layer. Verify the entities in the relevant state rather than relying on the Layr brand alone. 2 14
  • What markets were approached. Ask which insurers received the submission, which declined and whether a wholesaler or existing broker appointment limited the search. Layr’s reference to national carriers does not answer that account-specific question. 6
  • Which products are currently supported. Confirm whether your broker’s implementation includes the six currently pictured lines and any legacy-listed or specialized coverage you need. For cyber, obtain the insurer, form, endorsements and incident-response instructions. 4 13 7
  • Where the policy applies. Verify state and territorial eligibility, admitted or surplus-lines status, covered locations and any contractual insurer-rating requirement. Public references to U.S. brokerages do not establish nationwide product availability. 11
  • How renewals and claims are controlled. Put the renewal authorization, opt-out deadline, service responsibilities and insurer notice channels in writing. Confirm that a submitted portal request has been accepted when a deadline matters. 6 5
  • What the full cost is. Reconcile Layr’s premium-based compensation, carrier commissions and any finance fee for this account. Ask for the total repayment if paying monthly and for the cancellation or refund method. 6 8
