Layr vs USI Insurance Services

Why Layr’s brokerage workflow software is not a consumer alternative to hiring USI as broker of record.

Introduction

If you are a founder comparing “insurance websites,” Layr will look like a competitor to USI only until you read who the customer is. Layr’s buyer is an independent brokerage that wants to offload small-commercial service while keeping broker-of-record status and commissions. USI’s buyer is the insured company appointing USI. These products complement when a small agency uses Layr; they are not substitutes for a national technology practice. 1 16

Where Each Provider Shines

Where Layr Shines

  • Independent brokerages can combine workflow software and licensed support for small-commercial accounts under their own brand. 2,3,5
  • Layr describes a broker-branded portal for policy documents, certificates, claims, renewals and payments, supported by licensed staff. 5,12

Where USI Insurance Services Shines

  • USI’s Technology practice says it works with software, hardware and related companies from early seed stage through IPO. 16,24,35
  • USI says it is customarily paid insurer commissions and may receive additional contingent compensation, with details available on request. 22

Key Differences Between Layr and USI

Who Contracts with You

On a Layr-powered account, your broker of record is the participating agency, not “Layr Insurance.” On a USI account, USI is the producer obtaining coverage. Do not sign a Layr-looking portal and assume USI is involved, or the reverse. 2 22

What Gets Quoted

Layr’s current capture illustration is small-commercial (general liability, auto, property, workers’ compensation, umbrella, cyber). A 2021-branded page lists additional lines that Layr’s current materials do not treat as the live illustration. USI’s Technology practice lists directors and officers, cargo, and other brokerage placements. Layr’s current illustration is not built to show that startup specialty menu. 13 24

Workflow Versus Consultation

Layr describes an online assessment that then goes to underwriting on behalf of the brokerage. USI describes emailing specialists. If your current broker uses Layr, you may already have the portal; adding USI would be a broker-of-record change, not a software upgrade. 4 19

Money Flows

Layr’s economics are a split between platform and the retaining brokerage, plus a possible high-percentage finance fee on monthly credit-card plans. USI’s disclosure is insurer commission and contingents to USI. Compare apples: what the insured pays in premium, fees, and finance charges. 8 22

Service After Bind

Layr markets white-label portal support. USI markets USI ONE planning. Different jobs. 5 17

What to Confirm in Quotes

  • Who is broker of record on any Layr-branded login you already use. 2
  • Whether you are shopping small-commercial workflow or appointing a middle-market technology broker. 24
  • Finance-fee percentage if paying monthly through Layr’s consumer disclosure. 6
  • Issuing insurers, which neither public site fully schedules. 6 29

Service Comparison

Layr vs USI: documented services and availability

CriteriaLayrUSI Insurance Services
Business role

Layr Holdings, Inc. operates withlayr.com and markets the Layr Apex platform and licensed support service. Public materials describe Layr handling sales, service and support while its brokerage customer keeps the broker-of-record relationship; they do not identify Layr as the insurer underwriting every policy. 9,1,2,5

The reviewed sources identify Layr Holdings, Inc., its leaders and several investors, but do not disclose a current controlling parent or ownership percentages. 9,10,12

Layr says a participating brokerage can offload small-business sales, service and support to Layr while retaining broker-of-record status and 100% of its commissions. 2,6

USI describes itself as a U.S. insurance brokerage and consulting firm that arranges property and casualty, employee benefits, personal risk, program, and retirement solutions. The reviewed official pages do not identify USI as the insurer that issues commercial policies. 16,15,22,35

USI’s commissions page states that, as a licensed insurance producer, it may advise on insurance contracts, sell insurance, and obtain coverages for clients. Privacy and staff materials identify the operating company as USI Insurance Services LLC. Current California producer-license status remains independently unverified. 22,21,36

On 31 August 2026, Aon plc announced a definitive agreement to acquire USI from KKR and other shareholders for a $17.0 billion purchase price, with closing expected in the fourth quarter of 2026 subject to customary conditions including regulatory approvals. Aon stated that Aon and USI will continue to operate independently until the closing date. The reviewed announcement does not establish that the transaction has closed. 35

Customer focus

Layr provides insurance workflow software and licensed support for independent brokerages serving small-commercial accounts. Policyholders use a broker-branded experience rather than necessarily buying from a storefront carrying the Layr name. 2,3,5

USI says it has served over 500,000 clients nationwide and positions itself as a middle-market brokerage and consulting firm. Its Technology practice describes clients including software, hardware, networking, semiconductors, or communications companies from early seed stage through IPO. Public pages do not publish a minimum revenue, headcount, or California-startup eligibility screen. 16,24,35

Application process

Layr describes an online workflow in which a small-business owner assesses and selects coverage, pays, and then has the submission sent to underwriting. Current pages use different speed claims—10 minutes on New Business Capture and 12 minutes in a 2024 announcement—so neither figure establishes the time to receive or bind an actual quote. 4,11

USI does not publish a self-serve commercial quote flow on the reviewed pages. Technology and P&C inquiries are directed to pcinquiries@usi.com or a local office. The contact page includes a website message box that USI warns is not secured in transit and should not be used for sensitive information. Small- and medium-sized management-liability inquiries are also directed to Select.Business@usi.com. No public binding timetable or online eligibility tool was found. 24,23,19,31

Fees and compensation

Layr's current broker FAQ says Layr receives a percentage of premium while the brokerage keeps 100% of commissions. A separate consumer-facing disclosure says carriers pay Layr a commission and businesses may pay a finance fee of up to 20% of premium. The pages do not reconcile which arrangement applies to a particular broker, policyholder or payment plan. 6,8

Layr's consumer-facing compensation disclosure says a business that uses its monthly credit-card payment arrangement can pay a percentage-based finance fee of up to 20% of premium. The page does not provide an account-specific rate, total repayment or cancellation terms. 8

Unless otherwise negotiated, USI says compensation for placing coverage is customarily a commission calculated as a percentage of premium and paid by the insurer. It may also receive additional monetary and non-monetary compensation from insurers or intermediaries (including affiliates), which can be contingent on volume, profitability, or other factors, and some agreements include growth or distribution incentives. Clients may request the nature and source of expected compensation, including on alternative quotes. Standard commission percentages and fee schedules for startup accounts are not published. 22

Servicing and renewals

Layr markets a white-labeled portal with licensed support and broker dashboard updates for policies, renewals, claims and payments. A company release also describes policyholder access to documents, quotes, claims, certificates, bills and electronic payments. 5,12

Layr says its team gathers updates, negotiates renewal terms with underwriters and finalizes renewal documents. It describes automatic-renewal policies as hands-free and says customers whose policies need updated information are alerted 60 days before renewal. 6

USI describes USI ONE as a proprietary consultative process that combines Omni analytics, a national network of specialists, and an enterprise planning process. Technology and P&C pages say clients receive tailored recommendations aimed at total cost of risk. Those are company descriptions of advisory method, not independently verified service outcomes. 17,24,23

USI PATH is described as a proprietary risk-control platform that presents industry loss drivers, improvement areas by coverage line, and curated vendor solutions with preferred pricing and ROI projections. The homepage also markets PATH as guiding clients through risk control from identifying sources of loss to targeting solutions. Performance, ROI, and premium-reduction claims on those pages are company-reported. 32,15
