Layr vs
TechInsurance
Deciding whether to keep a brokerage using Layr or move to TechInsurance when the main problem is policy administration.
Introduction
A finance lead frustrated by certificate requests may be offered a Layr-powered portal by an existing broker while considering TechInsurance as a replacement. Layr sells workflow software and support to brokerages; TechInsurance is an agency relationship a business can approach for quotes. A new portal and a new broker solve different parts of the problem. 2 5 16

Key Differences Between Layr and TechInsurance
Retaining the Broker Versus Reassigning the Account
Layr’s advertised model lets the brokerage retain broker-of-record status while Layr handles sales, service and support. Its FAQ says it can use the brokerage’s existing insurers and wholesale routes. If the current insurance is satisfactory, ask whether adding Layr changes only administration or also the people giving advice and negotiating renewals. 2 6
TechInsurance’s account-manager and online purchase model instead sits within its disclosed SPG agency business. Moving there requires defining which policies and service duties transfer; the public record does not establish that an existing insurer or program can be retained. Neither set of platform branding identifies the final insurer. 17 23 22
The Implemented Product Menu Matters
Layr’s current quotation illustration shows several small-commercial coverages, but it is not proof that every brokerage implementation offers each one. Older referral pages contain additional labels whose linked product pages were unavailable during research. Do not use that historic menu to decide whether a technology E&O request is supported today. 4 13 7
TechInsurance has a direct technology E&O/cyber offering and a California sales route. Those are clearer entry points for asking about that product and location, not guarantees of terms. Ask the Layr-supported broker and TechInsurance for actual proposals before treating a platform catalogue difference as an unavailable coverage. 21 19
Service Ownership and Payment Arrangements
Layr describes gathering renewal information and negotiating with underwriters; TechInsurance’s reviewed pages leave a renewal remarketing schedule unspecified. A service comparison should name who gathers updates, approves renewals and handles exceptions to routine certificate requests. A portal feature list does not establish those contractual responsibilities. 6 5 17
Layr’s broker-facing and consumer-facing compensation pages describe different arrangements whose applicability remains unresolved. TechInsurance links to SPG’s disclosure of commissions and possible client fees. Ask which agreement governs this implementation rather than stacking every publicly described charge into a hypothetical bill. 6 8 24
What to Confirm in Quotes
- Does Layr change the broker, service team or just the interface, and what would actually transfer to TechInsurance? 2 23
- Can the current implementation place the requested technology coverage in California, with which legal insurer and forms? 6 21
- Obtain a responsibility schedule for certificates, underwriting handoffs and renewals, plus the applicable financing and compensation agreement. 11 8 24
Service Comparison
Layr vs TechInsurance: documented services and availability
| Criteria | Layr | TechInsurance |
|---|---|---|
| Business role | Layr Holdings, Inc. operates withlayr.com and markets the Layr Apex platform and licensed support service. Public materials describe Layr handling sales, service and support while its brokerage customer keeps the broker-of-record relationship; they do not identify Layr as the insurer underwriting every policy. 9,1,2,5 The reviewed sources identify Layr Holdings, Inc., its leaders and several investors, but do not disclose a current controlling parent or ownership percentages. 9,10,12 Layr says a participating brokerage can offload small-business sales, service and support to Layr while retaining broker-of-record status and 100% of its commissions. 2,6 | TechInsurance is a small-business insurance agency and brokerage. Its legal disclosure identifies the business as a division of Specialty Program Group LLC, doing business in California as SPG Insurance Solutions. 17,23,24 TechInsurance describes itself as part of Insureon and HUB International. Its history says HUB acquired Insureon’s digital agency in 2022 while Bold Penguin acquired the technology platform; HUB’s acquisition announcement placed the agency operations within Specialty Program Group. 16,17,26 |
| Application process | Layr describes an online workflow in which a small-business owner assesses and selects coverage, pays, and then has the submission sent to underwriting. Current pages use different speed claims—10 minutes on New Business Capture and 12 minutes in a 2024 announcement—so neither figure establishes the time to receive or bind an actual quote. 4,11 | TechInsurance describes a single application for comparing multiple insurance quotes, followed by policy purchase and online coverage management, with licensed-agent guidance available. 16 TechInsurance’s account instructions warn that quotes may take time to appear after an application is submitted; an application is not confirmation of bound coverage. 17 |
| Access to insurers | Layr says it works with major national insurers, accesses other markets through wholesalers and can use a brokerage customer's existing carriers. It does not publish a current legal-entity carrier panel or promise that every market will quote every account. 6 The reviewed current product, portal and FAQ pages do not identify the issuing insurer or policy form for each available product. Those details must come from the actual proposal and policy. 4,7,6 | TechInsurance names insurance partners including The Hartford, Hiscox, Chubb and Travelers. These are examples of marketed relationships, not the identified contracting insurer for a quote; ask for the exact issuing entity and its California placement route. 22 |
| Servicing and renewals | Layr markets a white-labeled portal with licensed support and broker dashboard updates for policies, renewals, claims and payments. A company release also describes policyholder access to documents, quotes, claims, certificates, bills and electronic payments. 5,12 Layr says its team gathers updates, negotiates renewal terms with underwriters and finalizes renewal documents. It describes automatic-renewal policies as hands-free and says customers whose policies need updated information are alerted 60 days before renewal. 6 | TechInsurance says it provides a dedicated account manager and online certificate access. Its instructions require an active policy for a certificate request and direct urgent requests to the account manager. 15,17 The reviewed About and Contact pages do not establish a renewal remarketing schedule, a contractual response-time commitment, or the scope of dedicated support for a complex growth-stage insurance program. 16,17 |
| Fees and compensation | Layr's current broker FAQ says Layr receives a percentage of premium while the brokerage keeps 100% of commissions. A separate consumer-facing disclosure says carriers pay Layr a commission and businesses may pay a finance fee of up to 20% of premium. The pages do not reconcile which arrangement applies to a particular broker, policyholder or payment plan. 6,8 Layr's consumer-facing compensation disclosure says a business that uses its monthly credit-card payment arrangement can pay a percentage-based finance fee of up to 20% of premium. The page does not provide an account-specific rate, total repayment or cancellation terms. 8 | TechInsurance directs buyers to SPG’s compensation disclosure, which describes insurer commissions, contingent and supplemental payments, and possible negotiated client fees. Some placements may involve both commission and client-paid fees; quote-specific amounts are not disclosed there. 23,24 SPG discloses that strategic insurers may pay enhanced compensation and that some of it may incentivize employees to prioritize those insurers’ products. Ask which markets were approached and how the placement is compensated. 24 |
