Armilla vs
Layr
Understand how AI risk underwriting differs from a broker-branded platform for small-commercial insurance service.
Introduction
A finance lead using a broker-branded insurance portal may not be choosing Layr as a replacement broker at all. Layr supplies software and licensed support while its brokerage customer retains the broker-of-record relationship. Armilla offers specialist AI underwriting and assessment services. The useful question is whether the existing broker can coordinate an AI engagement and keep the resulting documents and responsibilities clear. 10 6

Key Differences Between Armilla and Layr
The Portal Is Not the Insurance Counterparty
Layr’s current product demonstration shows several small-commercial policy choices, but does not identify an insurer or form for every placement. Armilla’s AI product description is more focused on model-related exposures, yet its brand is also distinct from the risk-bearing insurer. Trace the proposed transaction from the brokerage through any intermediary to the insurer rather than treating the portal logo as the entity accepting risk. 12 14 1
Layr says it can use a brokerage’s existing carriers and access other markets through wholesalers. That describes possible distribution infrastructure, not proof of an Armilla relationship. The broker must establish which specialist markets it can actually approach for the AI use case. 14 6
Keep Model Work Separate from Policy Administration
Layr describes documents, certificates, claims, payments and renewal support in a white-labeled experience. Armilla’s assessments instead investigate model behavior and can include remediation and optional retesting. A policy upload or renewal notification does not mean a model update has been technically evaluated or accepted by an underwriter. Assign those duties explicitly if both services are involved. 13 14 5
Find the Applicable Compensation Agreement
Layr's current broker FAQ says Layr receives a percentage of premium while the brokerage keeps 100% of commissions. A separate consumer-facing disclosure says carriers pay Layr a commission and businesses may pay a finance fee of up to 20% of premium. The pages do not reconcile which arrangement applies to a particular broker, policyholder or payment plan. 14,16
For the buyer, the relevant comparison is the implementation’s actual invoice and service agreement against the AI engagement’s costs. Armilla advertises broker commissions and its site terms permit service fees, without an insurance-specific schedule. Neither the broker-retains-commissions statement nor the availability of an online interface establishes that the overall arrangement has no additional cost. 6 7
What to Confirm in Quotes
- Name the broker of record, the licensed support entity and the insurer for each policy, then ask who can submit the AI risk to specialist markets. 10 14
- Establish whether the AI contract can be serviced within the current arrangement and who handles model-change notices, retesting and renewals. 13 5
- Reconcile the applicable Layr compensation or finance terms with all AI assessment, premium and placement charges, and confirm California eligibility separately. 16 7 1
Service Comparison
Armilla vs Layr: documented services and availability
| Criteria | Armilla | Layr |
|---|---|---|
| Business role | Armilla markets AI liability insurance, performance warranties and model assessments. It describes its insurance operation as a managing general agent (MGA), an intermediary with underwriting responsibilities, and names Armilla Insurance Services as a Lloyd’s coverholder. These descriptions do not make Armilla the risk-bearing insurer. 3,1,6 Florida’s corporate registry lists Armilla Insurance Services Inc., a Delaware corporation. This establishes a corporate identity, not an insurance license or authority to place a California risk. 8 | Layr Holdings, Inc. operates withlayr.com and markets the Layr Apex platform and licensed support service. Public materials describe Layr handling sales, service and support while its brokerage customer keeps the broker-of-record relationship; they do not identify Layr as the insurer underwriting every policy. 17,9,10,13 The reviewed sources identify Layr Holdings, Inc., its leaders and several investors, but do not disclose a current controlling parent or ownership percentages. 17,18,20 Layr says a participating brokerage can offload small-business sales, service and support to Layr while retaining broker-of-record status and 100% of its commissions. 10,14 |
| Access to insurers | Armilla names certain underwriters at Lloyd’s for its affirmative AI liability insurance. Its product brief also names Chaucer, Axis Capital and Convex as backing partners, without identifying the contracting insurer or syndicate for an individual quote. 1,3 The warranty brief names Chaucer Group, Greenlight Re and Swiss Re as backing partners. It does not identify the legal warranty issuer, the buyer’s direct rights against a backing insurer, or a California-specific warranty contract. 4 | Layr says it works with major national insurers, accesses other markets through wholesalers and can use a brokerage customer's existing carriers. It does not publish a current legal-entity carrier panel or promise that every market will quote every account. 14 The reviewed current product, portal and FAQ pages do not identify the issuing insurer or policy form for each available product. Those details must come from the actual proposal and policy. 12,15,14 |
| Servicing and renewals | Armilla Verified evaluates model performance, fairness, security and robustness. Armilla describes scoping, testing, remediation support and an internal report, with a badge conditional on meeting benchmarks. Optional monitoring and retesting are offered as models change. 5 The reviewed assessment and insurance pages do not disclose insurance renewal procedures or whether ongoing model monitoring is included in the premium. Optional assessment support should be priced and scoped separately in the proposal. 5,2 | Layr markets a white-labeled portal with licensed support and broker dashboard updates for policies, renewals, claims and payments. A company release also describes policyholder access to documents, quotes, claims, certificates, bills and electronic payments. 13,20 Layr says its team gathers updates, negotiates renewal terms with underwriters and finalizes renewal documents. It describes automatic-renewal policies as hands-free and says customers whose policies need updated information are alerted 60 days before renewal. 14 |
| Fees and compensation | Armilla advertises commissions to brokers without publishing rates on the reviewed broker page. Its website terms allow service fees but do not provide an insurance-specific fee schedule. Premiums, assessment costs and any broker or policy charges need an itemized quote. 6,7 | Layr's current broker FAQ says Layr receives a percentage of premium while the brokerage keeps 100% of commissions. A separate consumer-facing disclosure says carriers pay Layr a commission and businesses may pay a finance fee of up to 20% of premium. The pages do not reconcile which arrangement applies to a particular broker, policyholder or payment plan. 14,16 Layr's consumer-facing compensation disclosure says a business that uses its monthly credit-card payment arrangement can pay a percentage-based finance fee of up to 20% of premium. The page does not provide an account-specific rate, total repayment or cancellation terms. 16 |
