Coalition vs
Layr
Compare Coalition’s insurance products with Layr’s broker-branded small-commercial servicing platform.
Introduction
If your broker introduces a new portal while you are reviewing a Coalition quote, separate the service change from the insurance decision. Layr sells workflow software and licensed support to brokerages; Coalition offers cyber and technology E&O through brokers. A portal and a policy can occupy different places in the same buying process, although these records do not establish an integration between the companies. 20 23 13 1

Key Differences Between Coalition and Layr
The Brokerage Can Retain the Relationship
Layr says a participating brokerage can offload small-business sales, service and support to Layr while retaining broker-of-record status and 100% of its commissions. 20,24
A founder should ask which tasks the brokerage delegates and which remain with the familiar account team. Coalition’s legal disclosures instead identify the producer, security-service provider and issuing-insurer responsibilities around its offerings. Neither the broker’s logo nor a software login identifies the insurer that owes benefits under the policy. 2
The Current Product Evidence Has Different Depth
Layr's platform illustration includes cyber coverage, but its previously reviewed dedicated cyber product page returned a not-found response on re-access. Current coverage options, insurer, policy wording and eligibility need confirmation from the broker. The unavailable page does not establish that cyber placements have stopped. 25,22
Coalition’s current product page describes combined Tech E&O/cyber, and its help center provides a surplus-lines route for technology coverage. Layr’s current demonstration establishes a cyber shopping category, not matching policy language. Request the actual insurer proposal from the Layr-supported broker before comparing limits or exclusions. A disappeared product page is not evidence that the placement service ended. 1 11
Platform Economics and Policy Compensation Are Separate
Layr's current broker FAQ says Layr receives a percentage of premium while the brokerage keeps 100% of commissions. A separate consumer-facing disclosure says carriers pay Layr a commission and businesses may pay a finance fee of up to 20% of premium. The pages do not reconcile which arrangement applies to a particular broker, policyholder or payment plan. 24,26
Coalition describes producer commissions and potential incentives. A comparison needs the charges applying to your broker implementation and payment plan, not a sum of every compensation category on two websites. Ask whether any Layr finance arrangement is optional and whether a service charge survives cancellation. 4 26
What to Confirm in Quotes
Get a responsibility list for certificates, changes, renewals and claims, plus the insurer and current cyber/E&O forms. Reconcile Layr’s brokerage and consumer compensation descriptions with the actual agreement. If Coalition is proposed through the broker, confirm access directly; a general platform carrier-access statement does not prove that relationship. 24 23 13
Service Comparison
Coalition vs Layr: documented services and availability
| Criteria | Coalition | Layr |
|---|---|---|
| Business role | Coalition combines commercial insurance offerings with cyber risk-management services. In the United States, Coalition Insurance Solutions, Inc. (CIS) is the disclosed insurance producer and surplus lines broker; the issuing insurer is responsible for policy obligations. 2,7 Coalition lists CIS’s California producer and surplus lines license as 0L76155. This is a company disclosure; current license status has not been independently checked with the California regulator. 2 Coalition’s legal page identifies Coalition Incident Response, Inc., doing business as Coalition Security, or independent third parties as security-service providers. Coalition Security does not provide insurance. 2 | Layr Holdings, Inc. operates withlayr.com and markets the Layr Apex platform and licensed support service. Public materials describe Layr handling sales, service and support while its brokerage customer keeps the broker-of-record relationship; they do not identify Layr as the insurer underwriting every policy. 27,19,20,23 The reviewed sources identify Layr Holdings, Inc., its leaders and several investors, but do not disclose a current controlling parent or ownership percentages. 27,28,30 Layr says a participating brokerage can offload small-business sales, service and support to Layr while retaining broker-of-record status and 100% of its commissions. 20,24 |
| Access to insurers | Coalition identifies Coalition Insurance Company (NAIC 29530) for admitted cyber and describes CIS as acting for unaffiliated insurers on non-admitted placements. The reviewed sources do not assign a single insurer to every California Tech E&O quote; confirm the named carrier on the quote and policy. 3,2 | Layr says it works with major national insurers, accesses other markets through wholesalers and can use a brokerage customer's existing carriers. It does not publish a current legal-entity carrier panel or promise that every market will quote every account. 24 The reviewed current product, portal and FAQ pages do not identify the issuing insurer or policy form for each available product. Those details must come from the actual proposal and policy. 22,25,24 |
| Servicing and renewals | Coalition describes Control policyholder features at no additional cost, including attack-surface monitoring, vendor-risk monitoring, vulnerability alerts and guidance. Login Security requires connecting a Microsoft or Google environment. Additional security products are promoted separately. 8 Coalition says cyber renewals begin 90 days before expiration and follow Automatic, Express or Standard paths based on the account. Express renewals require responses; Standard renewals require a bind order and updated signed application, with additional underwriting conditions for some accounts. Automatic renewal does not guarantee an unchanged premium. 15 | Layr markets a white-labeled portal with licensed support and broker dashboard updates for policies, renewals, claims and payments. A company release also describes policyholder access to documents, quotes, claims, certificates, bills and electronic payments. 23,30 Layr says its team gathers updates, negotiates renewal terms with underwriters and finalizes renewal documents. It describes automatic-renewal policies as hands-free and says customers whose policies need updated information are alerted 60 days before renewal. 24 |
| Fees and compensation | Coalition says independent producers typically receive commissions based on premium for new and renewed policies. Contingent commissions, placement incentives and compensation for certain cybersecurity sales may also apply. 4 Coalition says it retains part of earned premiums to fund operations and broker commissions and receives additional carrier payments based on the portfolio’s annual loss ratio. 16 The reviewed compensation disclosures do not state the commission percentage, broker fee or total premium for a particular startup quote. Obtain an itemized cost and compensation explanation from the placing broker. 4,16 | Layr's current broker FAQ says Layr receives a percentage of premium while the brokerage keeps 100% of commissions. A separate consumer-facing disclosure says carriers pay Layr a commission and businesses may pay a finance fee of up to 20% of premium. The pages do not reconcile which arrangement applies to a particular broker, policyholder or payment plan. 24,26 Layr's consumer-facing compensation disclosure says a business that uses its monthly credit-card payment arrangement can pay a percentage-based finance fee of up to 20% of premium. The page does not provide an account-specific rate, total repayment or cancellation terms. 26 |
