Corgi vs Layr

How a direct Corgi placement differs from insurance serviced through a Layr-powered brokerage, including carrier continuity, renewals and payment costs.

Introduction

Corgi sells startup-oriented insurance packages through its agency and affiliated or partner insurers, with an online route and specialist assistance. 2 1 Layr supplies workflow software and licensed support to independent brokerages serving small-commercial customers. Its marketed arrangement lets the brokerage retain broker-of-record status while Layr handles sales and service behind a broker-branded experience. 24 27

For a business whose existing broker introduces a new digital portal, the question is whether to change its insurance placement or improve administration within the current relationship. Layr may be part of the latter. Comparing a Corgi quote with “Layr” without identifying the broker and insurer risks confusing a policy decision with a service-platform decision. 1 24 28

Key Differences Between Corgi and Layr

Policy Changes Versus Platform Changes

a growing company already has property, liability and workers’ compensation through a local agency and is considering Corgi for technology and board requirements. If that agency adopts Layr, it may retain the customer relationship and use existing carrier relationships through the platform. Ask whether the proposal changes the insurer or wording at all, or merely changes how applications, documents and service requests are handled. Layr says it can work with a brokerage’s carriers, but that is not confirmation for this account. 24 28 2

Corgi’s proposal needs its own insurer and coverage map. It might replace some policies, add others or leave existing policies in place. Its startup packages bring general liability, technology, cyber and management coverages into the discussion, whereas Layr’s current New Business Capture demonstration shows general liability, auto liability, property, workers’ compensation, umbrella and cyber choices. The illustration is not a guarantee that every brokerage implementation offers them. 2 26

For D&O or technology E&O, ask the Layr-enabled broker what current product it can provide. Broader labels on Layr’s older referral page are insufficient to establish current availability. Conversely, missing detail on Layr’s public marketing site does not prove that the broker cannot arrange those lines. The comparison should be between the broker’s complete proposal and Corgi’s offered package. 35 28 2

Portal Service, Certificates and Claims Notice

Layr describes a white-labeled portal, meaning the business may see its agency’s name while Layr supplies the software and support. Its materials describe policies, payments, certificates and claims activity. That can let a buyer retain a familiar advisor while obtaining a different service interface, subject to the actual agreement. Confirm which requests the Layr team completes, which the broker handles and which require insurer approval. 24 27

Corgi describes a customer dashboard for adding and upgrading coverage as funding, hiring and contracts change. Ask who checks a contract clause before the customer uses that dashboard to request an increase. For both arrangements, a recurring task is a clearer test, such as a customer requesting a new endorsement and proof of coverage. Establish who approves the policy change and who supplies the certificate; Corgi’s disclosure explicitly distinguishes a certificate from a document altering coverage. 2 1 27

The same distinction applies to claim notice. Layr’s portal activity and licensed support are service functions, not evidence that Layr pays the claim. Corgi may use an affiliated or third-party administrator, while the insurer retains coverage and payment responsibility. Save the actual insurer’s reporting instructions outside the portal so an urgent notice does not depend on knowing which company operates the interface. 27 1

Renewal Authority and Split Placements

Layr describes gathering updates, negotiating with underwriters and completing renewal documents. It says policies needing updated documentation prompt contact before renewal and describes automatic-renewal policies as hands-free. For a finance team with an approval process, ask when the proposed terms arrive, who can accept them and how to stop an automatic renewal. An information-request date is not a promised date for insurer terms. 28

Corgi’s growth-servicing description does not establish the same renewal process, and its disclosures leave renewal and cancellation to policy terms and applicable rules. If a Layr-enabled broker is retaining some policies while Corgi places others, nominate one person to reconcile expiration dates, updated business information and coverage changes. A shared calendar is especially useful when a customer’s required technology limit and the office policy renew at different times. 2 1 28

Compensation, Financing and Insurer Status

Layr’s broker FAQ says it receives a percentage of premium while the brokerage keeps its commissions. Its consumer-facing compensation page instead describes carrier commissions and a finance fee of up to 20% of premium for its monthly credit-card arrangement. These are different published descriptions; they do not establish that every account pays both or that the upper fee applies to this broker’s implementation. Ask which agreement governs, who receives each payment and what the full repayment schedule costs. 28 30

Corgi discloses possible insurer- or customer-paid commissions or fees. Compare premium and distribution or financing charges for the same insurance scope. Keeping the brokerage relationship through Layr is not evidence of unchanged charges, and approaching Corgi directly is not evidence of no producer compensation. 30 1

If the proposed Corgi insurer is Technology Risk Retention Group, Corgi says it has no AM Best rating and its policies lack state guaranty-fund protection. Eligible admitted/partner alternatives are separately described. For a contract specifying insurer status, verify the offered insurer on each side; Layr’s ability to use existing carriers does not establish the rating or admitted status of the resulting policy. 1 20 28

What to Confirm in Quotes

  • A before-and-after policy schedule: retained, replaced and added policies, with insurers, terms and any current technology or D&O option beyond Layr’s demonstrated catalogue. 26 28 2
  • Named service owners: broker of record, Layr support, Corgi contact and insurer approval routes for endorsements and claim notice. 24 27 1
  • A written renewal approval process: information requests, proposal delivery, authority to bind and opt-out deadlines. 28 1
  • An account-specific compensation explanation: reconcile Layr’s two published descriptions and identify all finance charges, alongside Corgi’s producer compensation and policy costs. 28 30 1

Service Comparison

Corgi vs Layr: documented services and availability

CriteriaCorgiLayr
Customer focus

Corgi offers business insurance for technology companies and startups, with packages for pre-seed and seed, Series A, and growth-stage businesses, plus a custom option. 2,3,6,15

In August 2026, Corgi announced product filings for offices, retail, restaurants, personal services, self-storage, wholesalers, community associations, and small rental properties. Availability depends on the product and state. 9

Layr provides insurance workflow software and licensed support for independent brokerages serving small-commercial accounts. Policyholders use a broker-branded experience rather than necessarily buying from a storefront carrying the Layr name. 24,25,27

Business role

Corgi Insurance Services, Inc. is the licensed agency that sells and administers Corgi policies. The insurer named in your policy provides the coverage. 1,2,4

Layr Holdings, Inc. operates withlayr.com and markets the Layr Apex platform and licensed support service. Public materials describe Layr handling sales, service and support while its brokerage customer keeps the broker-of-record relationship; they do not identify Layr as the insurer underwriting every policy. 31,23,24,27

The reviewed sources identify Layr Holdings, Inc., its leaders and several investors, but do not disclose a current controlling parent or ownership percentages. 31,32,34

Layr says a participating brokerage can offload small-business sales, service and support to Layr while retaining broker-of-record status and 100% of its commissions. 24,28

Application process

You can apply online or book a call with a Corgi specialist. Corgi says eligible applicants can get a quote in minutes and buy coverage the same day. Its disclosures describe both an issued-policy-and-payment condition and temporary coverage under a written binder. Confirm the applicable conditions and effective date in writing. 2,1

Layr describes an online workflow in which a small-business owner assesses and selects coverage, pays, and then has the submission sent to underwriting. Current pages use different speed claims—10 minutes on New Business Capture and 12 minutes in a 2024 announcement—so neither figure establishes the time to receive or bind an actual quote. 26,33

Servicing and renewals

Corgi says customers can add or upgrade policies through its dashboard as they raise funding, hire, or sign larger contracts. Renewal and cancellation terms depend on the policy and state rules. 2,1

Layr markets a white-labeled portal with licensed support and broker dashboard updates for policies, renewals, claims and payments. A company release also describes policyholder access to documents, quotes, claims, certificates, bills and electronic payments. 27,34

Layr says its team gathers updates, negotiates renewal terms with underwriters and finalizes renewal documents. It describes automatic-renewal policies as hands-free and says customers whose policies need updated information are alerted 60 days before renewal. 28

Fees and compensation

Corgi Insurance Services may receive commissions or fees from the insurer or the customer. You can ask for the type and amount of compensation on your policy. 1

Corgi lists typical annual prices of $2,000–$5,000 for eligible pre-seed and seed startups and $5,000–$15,000 for Series A companies. Your price depends on the business, state, coverage, limits, and other underwriting details. 2,6,7

Layr's current broker FAQ says Layr receives a percentage of premium while the brokerage keeps 100% of commissions. A separate consumer-facing disclosure says carriers pay Layr a commission and businesses may pay a finance fee of up to 20% of premium. The pages do not reconcile which arrangement applies to a particular broker, policyholder or payment plan. 28,30

Layr's consumer-facing compensation disclosure says a business that uses its monthly credit-card payment arrangement can pay a percentage-based finance fee of up to 20% of premium. The page does not provide an account-specific rate, total repayment or cancellation terms. 30
