Founder Shield vs Layr

How Founder Shield’s growth-company brokerage compares with keeping an existing broker whose small-business service runs through Layr.

Introduction

Founder Shield arranges insurance for growing businesses and pairs its online platform with risk advisors. Layr provides software and licensed support behind independent brokerages serving small-commercial accounts. A new advisory relationship and a more manageable service from the existing broker are different choices. Layr’s model can preserve that existing relationship. 1 30

Key Differences Between Founder Shield and Layr

Portal Access and the Existing Broker

a growing retailer is satisfied with its agent’s knowledge of the business but spends too much time requesting documents and chasing renewals. Layr describes a broker-branded portal and support operation while the brokerage remains broker of record—the designated broker for the account. Founder Shield describes its own advisor-led relationship. Those are distinct organizational choices even if both ultimately provide online policy records. 30 33 1

Ask the existing broker which work it would continue doing and which Layr would perform. The published model assigns sales, service and support to Layr, but does not make every individual arrangement identical. With Founder Shield, ask who owns program design and day-to-day changes. Compare the people accountable for a request, not just the dashboard shown during a demonstration. Neither service description establishes measured responsiveness. 30 34 19

Both routes still require a separate issuing insurer. Layr says it can use the brokerage’s existing carriers and reach additional markets through wholesalers. Founder Shield describes selecting insurers for the industry and growth needs. A move to Layr’s workflow need not mean replacing every insurer, while hiring Founder Shield does not establish which carriers will accept the account. Request the proposed insurer and placement route for each policy. 34 10

Growth Work Beyond Routine Administration

If that retailer begins selling its own products and takes outside investment, ask for a fresh coverage brief. Founder Shield’s catalogue includes product liability, directors and officers insurance and specialized intellectual-property coverage. Layr’s current New Business Capture demonstration shows six common lines, including property, general liability and cyber; its FAQ says additional products can be developed for a brokerage. The existing broker may therefore handle specialist placements alongside Layr, but that scope must be confirmed. 11 32 34

Do not use Layr’s older referral catalogue as proof that every specialist line is available in the current implementation. Equally, a smaller public menu does not prove that the participating broker cannot arrange those lines elsewhere. Request a program map showing what sits in Layr, what remains with the broker’s specialist team, and what a Founder Shield proposal would replace. 41 34 12

For cyber, Layr’s current New Business Capture illustration includes a coverage option, while the detailed product page was unavailable in a subsequent source check. Founder Shield also markets cyber. If online sales become material, ask both for the currently offered interruption and liability terms and incident-response arrangements. The illustration supports a catalogue entry; it does not settle insurer, waiting period or exclusions, and an unavailable page does not establish discontinuation. 32 35 11

Approval in the Renewal Workflow

Layr describes automatic-renewal handling and an information request in advance for policies that need updates. Founder Shield publishes a preparation window and asks clients to report changed products, offices and territories. For the retailer’s new product range, a convenient renewal process is useful only if the relevant business changes reach underwriting before the next term is accepted. 34 20 19

Agree who gathers changes, compares new terms and obtains management approval. Layr’s public FAQ does not settle the deadline to stop an automatic renewal, and Founder Shield’s preparation advice is not a promised delivery date. Set an account-specific approval calendar, including any policies serviced outside Layr. A payment or underwriting submission alone should not be treated as confirmation that a changed risk was accepted. 34 39 20 9

Administration and Financing

Layr’s broker FAQ and consumer compensation disclosure describe different payment arrangements that are not reconciled publicly. Founder Shield describes commissions and fees, along with carrier installments or separate premium financing. Ask who pays Layr in this broker implementation and what, if anything, the buyer pays for monthly billing. The broker keeping its commissions does not establish that the buyer’s total cost is unchanged. 34 36 2 22

Claims also cross organizational boundaries. Layr describes portal claims activity and licensed support; Founder Shield describes reporting help and claims advocacy. Obtain the insurer’s notice instructions and name the broker or support team that will help. Portal access is an administrative feature, not evidence of claim acceptance or payment quality. 33 21

What to Confirm in Quotes

  • Who remains accountable? Request the broker-of-record identity and a division of duties between the existing broker and Layr, or the assigned Founder Shield team. 30 1
  • Where will specialist policies sit? Map product liability, directors and officers (D&O) and cyber requirements to the current implementation, external placements and proposed forms. 34 11
  • What authorizes renewal? Document change collection, management approval, automatic-renewal opt-out and responsibility for policies outside the portal. 34 20
  • What does administration cost? Reconcile Layr’s applicable compensation disclosure with the broker’s charges and compare total financed repayment with Founder Shield’s proposal. 36 22

Service Comparison

Founder Shield vs Layr: documented services and availability

CriteriaFounder ShieldLayr
Customer focus

Founder Shield focuses on venture-backed and high-growth businesses, from early funding rounds through an initial public offering. Its practices include technology, life sciences, financial services, retail and transportation. 1,6

Layr provides insurance workflow software and licensed support for independent brokerages serving small-commercial accounts. Policyholders use a broker-branded experience rather than necessarily buying from a storefront carrying the Layr name. 30,31,33

Application process

The Get a Quote link opens a portal with Create Account and Sign In options. Registration offers Google, Microsoft, or an email address and password. 7,8

Founder Shield advertises an application that takes under 15 minutes. That is an application-time claim, not a guaranteed time to receive insurer terms or put coverage in force. 6

To buy coverage, Founder Shield’s FAQ says you approve a proposal, select a payment method and choose the desired start date. Its team then follows up on documents needing electronic signatures and handles the insurer’s paperwork. 9

Layr describes an online workflow in which a small-business owner assesses and selects coverage, pays, and then has the submission sent to underwriting. Current pages use different speed claims—10 minutes on New Business Capture and 12 minutes in a 2024 announcement—so neither figure establishes the time to receive or bind an actual quote. 32,39

Access to insurers

Founder Shield advertises access to more than 200 carriers. Its placement FAQ says it selects markets first by their willingness to insure the industry and risk, then considers growth capacity, service and claims handling. The network size does not establish how many insurers will quote your account. 6,10

The placement FAQ says Founder Shield works exclusively with AM Best A-rated carriers. This is the broker’s stated selection standard; the reviewed sources do not independently establish the current rating of every insurer it uses. 10

Founder Shield identifies itself as the distributor of the AI product and names Testudo as its underwriter. Testudo describes Lloyd’s-backed capacity and says its US entity places insurance without bearing the risk. The insurer or syndicates responsible for a particular quote still need to be identified. 14,16,17

Layr says it works with major national insurers, accesses other markets through wholesalers and can use a brokerage customer's existing carriers. It does not publish a current legal-entity carrier panel or promise that every market will quote every account. 34

The reviewed current product, portal and FAQ pages do not identify the issuing insurer or policy form for each available product. Those details must come from the actual proposal and policy. 32,35,34

Servicing and renewals

Founder Shield’s certificate FAQ directs customers to email the team. For a request tied to a contract, it asks for the other party’s legal name and address, required wording, and the insurance requirements from the contract so the team can assess endorsement needs. 18

Founder Shield asks clients to report changes such as a new product, a different business model, a new office or entry into another territory. Its team says it will evaluate those changes and adjust coverage. 19

Founder Shield describes a platform for applications and renewals, with ongoing advisor support. Its renewal guide suggests starting 60–90 days before expiration and preparing updated business information and claims history. That is planning guidance, not a promised renewal-service deadline. 1,20

Founder Shield’s terms direct cancellation requests to client support and warn that some insurers retain a minimum earned premium—a portion you cannot recover by cancelling early. Check the proposal’s cancellation terms. 2

Layr markets a white-labeled portal with licensed support and broker dashboard updates for policies, renewals, claims and payments. A company release also describes policyholder access to documents, quotes, claims, certificates, bills and electronic payments. 33,40

Layr says its team gathers updates, negotiates renewal terms with underwriters and finalizes renewal documents. It describes automatic-renewal policies as hands-free and says customers whose policies need updated information are alerted 60 days before renewal. 34

Fees and compensation

Founder Shield’s pricing FAQ says quotes generally cover one year, unless stated otherwise, and include the fees and charges for that policy period. It describes full payment, carrier installments and financing through premium-finance companies, depending on the policy and payment arrangement. 22

Founder Shield discloses compensation through commissions, fees or interest and invites questions about the amount and nature of that compensation. Its terms say customer charges will be disclosed in advance. 2

The Baldwin Group’s January 2026 disclosure also describes client fees, commissions tied to volume or profitability, compensation for affiliated placement services, and referral fees from providers such as premium-finance companies. These are possible group arrangements, not a finding that each applies to your Founder Shield policy. 23

Layr's current broker FAQ says Layr receives a percentage of premium while the brokerage keeps 100% of commissions. A separate consumer-facing disclosure says carriers pay Layr a commission and businesses may pay a finance fee of up to 20% of premium. The pages do not reconcile which arrangement applies to a particular broker, policyholder or payment plan. 34,36

Layr's consumer-facing compensation disclosure says a business that uses its monthly credit-card payment arrangement can pay a percentage-based finance fee of up to 20% of premium. The page does not provide an account-specific rate, total repayment or cancellation terms. 36
