Coterie Insurance vs
Layr
How Coterie’s small-business programs for agents and Layr’s broker-branded sales and service workflows differ on a small-commercial account.
Introduction
Coterie Insurance supplies small-business insurance programs through agents. Layr provides workflow software and licensed support behind independent brokerages’ brands, with the brokerage retaining the broker-of-record relationship in its advertised model. An owner offered a new digital portal by an existing agent still needs to know what changed: the insurance program, the people servicing it, or only the interface. 6 25 28

Key Differences Between Coterie Insurance and Layr
Portals, Broker of Record and Service Teams
Coterie’s dashboard is designed for agents quoting its programs, while policyholders have separate resources for billing, documents and requests. Layr markets a broker-branded experience with support staff handling sales and service. If a familiar agency introduces Layr, ask whether the agency remains responsible for advice and which requests go to Layr’s team. The advertised retention of broker-of-record status means the named brokerage can remain involved even as the service operation changes. 6 10 25
Layr says it can work with a brokerage’s existing carriers and use wholesale markets. That flexibility is different from choosing one Coterie program, but it does not establish that Layr supports Coterie in this broker’s implementation. Ask for the actual carrier and product list used for the account. Neither the old nor new portal’s branding identifies the insurer responsible for paying a covered loss. 29 8
Product Access and Policy Schedules
Coterie’s documented core is BOP, general liability and miscellaneous professional liability, with optional endorsements. Layr’s current quote illustration shows general liability, auto liability, property, workers’ compensation, umbrella and cyber choices. For an owner hiring employees or adding a vehicle, the Layr-supported brokerage may provide a route to investigate additional lines; the illustration is not evidence that every partner offers all of them. 2 12 27
The relevant output is a policy schedule showing what stays in force, what is newly placed and what changes insurer. Layr’s older referral page lists more products, but many linked pages were unavailable in the provider research. Use the current brokerage implementation to answer a professional-liability or management-risk request rather than assuming an old product label remains available. Coterie’s catalogue and appetite likewise require a live eligibility check. 36 29 8
Binding, Certificates and Endorsements
Coterie describes an agent reviewing business data, selecting coverage and binding eligible policies in one workflow. Layr describes owner selection and payment followed by an underwriting handoff. For a lease deadline, ask exactly which stage the application has reached and what written document confirms the start date. Payment or a short online journey alone does not establish underwriting acceptance. 5 8 34
This also changes the question behind a certificate request. Coterie documents certificate generation and policy-change forms; Layr describes portal documents and certificates with licensed support. Ask which team can issue routine evidence and which team must obtain insurer approval for a policy endorsement. Receiving a certificate from the new portal should not be mistaken for approval of new contractual coverage. 10 28 35
Renewal Approval and Claims Contacts
Layr describes gathering updates and negotiating with underwriters, including advance requests for information on policies that need them. Coterie’s terms permit automatic renewal on applicable products. If the owner wants to approve every renewal, put that instruction into the service agreement and ask who records it. Layr’s description of hands-free renewal does not supply the opt-out deadline or mean a changed business can skip disclosure. 29 8
A practical handover includes the expiring policy, open requests and upcoming renewal dates. It should also preserve insurer notice instructions: Layr’s portal describes claims functions and support, while Coterie publishes intake routes. The interface may help report an event, but the claims-paying insurer and policy deadlines remain separate from the service brand. 28 11 8
Policy Charges, Broker Compensation and Financing
Coterie publishes policy and installment charges and a possible risk-program fee. Layr’s broker FAQ describes premium-based compensation while the broker retains commissions; its consumer-facing disclosure describes carrier commissions and a possible finance fee. These are different arrangements; written confirmation should show which apply. They do not prove that all charges stack on every policy. 8 29 31
For a buyer offered monthly payments through the new portal, request the annual premium, total repayment and financing agreement separately. A broker retaining its commissions does not establish that policyholder service is free; equally, Layr’s consumer-facing disclosure describes a finance fee of up to 20% of premium for its monthly credit-card payment arrangement, which does not establish the charge for this account. Compare the actual payment agreement rather than contrasting isolated fee percentages with fixed installment charges. 31 8
What to Confirm in Quotes
- What changed? Identify the broker of record, service team, insurer and product before and after the portal move. 25 8
- Which lines are supported here? Ask for the broker’s current market access and confirm any new employee or vehicle policy separately from the existing package. 29 27
- Who approves what? Record binding confirmation, endorsement authority, renewal approval and urgent insurer-reporting contacts. 34 28 10
- Which compensation model applies? Reconcile the broker agreement, finance disclosure and invoice rather than assuming every public fee description applies. 29 31

Coterie Insurance vs Layr: documented services and availability
| Criteria | Coterie Insurance | Layr |
|---|---|---|
| Business role | Coterie Insurance is a managing general agency and digital small-business insurance platform built primarily for licensed agents, brokers and distribution partners. It is not a direct-to-consumer insurance marketplace; a business owner is directed to work with an agent. 1,6,19 Coterie Applications, Inc. provides the platform under the website terms. Florida's current corporate record lists it as the member of Coterie Insurance Agency, LLC, the agency named in Coterie's footer; Massachusetts separately lists the agency with an active property-and-casualty producer license through December 28, 2026. 8,1,22,23 Coterie's website lists multiple investors, and Allianz X records Coterie as a current direct investment after leading a 2025 Series C round. The reviewed sources do not establish an acquisition, a controlling parent or Coterie's complete current ownership table. 1,19,20,22 | Layr Holdings, Inc. operates withlayr.com and markets the Layr Apex platform and licensed support service. Public materials describe Layr handling sales, service and support while its brokerage customer keeps the broker-of-record relationship; they do not identify Layr as the insurer underwriting every policy. 32,24,25,28 The reviewed sources identify Layr Holdings, Inc., its leaders and several investors, but do not disclose a current controlling parent or ownership percentages. 32,33,35 Layr says a participating brokerage can offload small-business sales, service and support to Layr while retaining broker-of-record status and 100% of its commissions. 25,29 |
| Application process | A licensed agent starts a quote in Coterie's dashboard with the client's business name and address, selects the principal industry, confirms or edits prefilled details, customizes coverage and pays to bind an eligible policy. Business owners who do not already have an agent can use Coterie's agent finder. 5,6,2 Coterie advertises bindable quotes in under two minutes for eligible standard risks. Its terms qualify that claim: a quote or estimate is not an insurance contract, and coverage remains subject to underwriting approval, eligibility verification and formal policy issuance. 6,8 | Layr describes an online workflow in which a small-business owner assesses and selects coverage, pays, and then has the submission sent to underwriting. Current pages use different speed claims—10 minutes on New Business Capture and 12 minutes in a 2024 announcement—so neither figure establishes the time to receive or bind an actual quote. 27,34 |
| Access to insurers | Coterie's terms say carrier partners underwrite and issue its policies. Its claims page identifies a separate Spinnaker Specialty route for surplus-lines policies beginning CSE, while its current coastal guide names Spinnaker Insurance Company only for eligible coastal Texas BOP risks. The issuing insurer therefore needs to be checked on each quote and policy. 8,11,17 | Layr says it works with major national insurers, accesses other markets through wholesalers and can use a brokerage customer's existing carriers. It does not publish a current legal-entity carrier panel or promise that every market will quote every account. 29 The reviewed current product, portal and FAQ pages do not identify the issuing insurer or policy form for each available product. Those details must come from the actual proposal and policy. 27,30,29 |
| Servicing and renewals | Policyholders can use My Policy Center, request policy changes, generate certificates and start a claim online. Coterie tells policyholders to use their agent or broker first for coverage questions and provides public sample BOP, general liability and professional liability forms for orientation. 10,8 Coterie's policyholder FAQ says each business location must have its own policy rather than listing several operating addresses on one Coterie policy. 10 Unless a policy says otherwise, Coterie's terms describe a 12-month policy that may renew automatically. Renewal charges may use the payment method on file, and the policyholder can contact Coterie or use account tools to change renewal preferences. 8 | Layr markets a white-labeled portal with licensed support and broker dashboard updates for policies, renewals, claims and payments. A company release also describes policyholder access to documents, quotes, claims, certificates, bills and electronic payments. 28,35 Layr says its team gathers updates, negotiates renewal terms with underwriters and finalizes renewal documents. It describes automatic-renewal policies as hands-free and says customers whose policies need updated information are alerted 60 days before renewal. 29 |
| Fees and compensation | Coterie's terms say new and renewal policies have a one-time policy fee whose amount varies, successful installments carry a $7 fee, late fees can be up to $10 and insufficient-funds fees up to $35. Fees vary by state and line, can be nonrefundable, and additional charges must be disclosed before bind or renewal. 8 A Coterie policy can include a separate Manage My Risk Program fee that the terms call fully earned on payment and nonrefundable after midterm cancellation. The terms say participation, or an accepted outside risk program, affects the insurance premium but do not publish the program fee amount. 8 Coterie's privacy policy says it may pay commissions to certain agents through a third-party processor. The reviewed public sources do not state the commission rate or whether additional producer compensation applies to a particular buyer's policy. 9,8 | Layr's current broker FAQ says Layr receives a percentage of premium while the brokerage keeps 100% of commissions. A separate consumer-facing disclosure says carriers pay Layr a commission and businesses may pay a finance fee of up to 20% of premium. The pages do not reconcile which arrangement applies to a particular broker, policyholder or payment plan. 29,31 Layr's consumer-facing compensation disclosure says a business that uses its monthly credit-card payment arrangement can pay a percentage-based finance fee of up to 20% of premium. The page does not provide an account-specific rate, total repayment or cancellation terms. 31 |
