TechInsurance vs The Hartford

Evaluating a Hartford SaaS package against TechInsurance comparison without mistaking a BOP add-on for complete technology or California employment protection.

Introduction

A small SaaS team buying its first package may start at The Hartford or use TechInsurance to compare markets. The Hartford appears on TechInsurance’s partner list, so the two routes can overlap. Focus on whether the package answers the customer’s technology-liability requirement and the company’s California employment exposure, rather than assuming a BOP title settles either. 8 13

Where Each Provider Shines

Where TechInsurance Shines

  • One application to compare multiple insurance quotes 2
  • Technology E&O and cyber coverage marketed together 7

Where The Hartford Shines

  • The Hartford designs small-business packages for SaaS and other software companies, typically starting from a business owner’s policy. 13,14,36,35
  • Small-business buyers can start an online quote-and-buy flow or call, or use an independent Hartford agent; commercial auto is not sold on that self-serve path. 14,13,20,19,29,31

Key Differences Between TechInsurance and the Hartford

Three Cyber Labels Do Not Mean the Same Product

The Hartford distinguishes a BOP cyber endorsement, CyberChoice First Response and FailSafe Technology E&O. TechInsurance describes shopping for technology E&O with cyber. Ask which Hartford product, if any, is being quoted and how it addresses the business’s actual software services; a data-breach add-on should not be treated as synonymous with the technology product. 25 26 7

The same precision matters when comparing prices: show the selected agreements, limits and endorsements side by side. Neither the Hartford SaaS marketing page nor TechInsurance’s general catalogue establishes that every advertised line is included in the displayed package. 13 6

California Changes the Employment-Coverage Question

The Hartford’s employment-practices page states there is no built-in EPL coverage in California, Minnesota, North Dakota or New York, and that the EPL program described on that page does not apply to EPL coverage written in California. Coverages also vary by state and class. 28

For a Bay Area employer, the task is to obtain an explicit California EPL proposal rather than rely on generic built-in coverage language. The limitation does not establish that all Hartford EPL is unavailable in California. TechInsurance lists employment practices coverage, but that catalogue alone does not establish a particular available form either. 28 6

Direct Purchase Still Has Product-Specific Handoffs

The Hartford offers online and phone purchase paths as well as agents, while management-liability inquiries go to an agent and small-business commercial auto is not on its current online purchase route. TechInsurance offers an application for comparing insurers with licensed guidance. Decide whether one provider will coordinate the whole request or whether separate product teams will need to be involved. 19 31 29 2

Both market ongoing policy service. The Hartford’s account tools and TechInsurance’s account manager are different access points, potentially on the same placement. Ask who handles a material business change rather than equating online certificate availability with full endorsement authority. 14 3

What to Confirm in Quotes

  • Identify the precise cyber or FailSafe product and the legal underwriting company. 25 16
  • Request California-specific EPL terms separately from the generic package description. 28 6
  • Reconcile direct and broker proposals for coverage, servicing and producer fees before treating their prices as comparable. 37 10

Service Comparison

TechInsurance vs The Hartford: documented services and availability

CriteriaTechInsuranceThe Hartford
Business role

TechInsurance is a small-business insurance agency and brokerage. Its legal disclosure identifies the business as a division of Specialty Program Group LLC, doing business in California as SPG Insurance Solutions. 3,9,10

TechInsurance describes itself as part of Insureon and HUB International. Its history says HUB acquired Insureon’s digital agency in 2022 while Bold Penguin acquired the technology platform; HUB’s acquisition announcement placed the agency operations within Specialty Program Group. 2,3,12

The Hartford is the brand of The Hartford Insurance Group, Inc., a financial holding company whose subsidiaries underwrite property-and-casualty insurance, employee benefits and other financial products. Independent agents and brokers, and Hartford employees who sell insurance, distribute those products. The brand is not itself the insurer on a policy. 16,37,33,19

Availability

TechInsurance’s California sales page offers an application and quote-comparison route for general liability, professional E&O, business owner’s policies, workers’ compensation, cyber, commercial auto, fidelity bonds and umbrella coverage. This establishes a marketed California route, not acceptance of a particular startup or availability of every listed product. 5

TechInsurance reports licensing in all 50 states and Washington, D.C., and lists California license 0L09546. Current regulator status, authority and appointments were not independently verified for this profile. 4

The Hartford states that products are not available in all states or for all businesses, and that listing a writing company as authorized to transact insurance does not guarantee that coverage will be offered. Workers’ compensation pages also say that in some states coverage can be bought only from a state-run program, not from a private insurer such as The Hartford. 14,16,24,21

The Hartford operates a California small-business insurance page that lists BOP, general liability, workers’ compensation, commercial auto, commercial property and professional liability and says California buyers can get a quote online or by phone. Hartford Fire Insurance Company is independently listed by the California Department of Insurance as an authorized property-and-casualty insurer (NAIC 19682). Those facts do not identify which affiliate would issue a particular California policy or whether a given SaaS risk will be accepted. 15,40,16

Application process

TechInsurance describes a single application for comparing multiple insurance quotes, followed by policy purchase and online coverage management, with licensed-agent guidance available. 2

TechInsurance’s account instructions warn that quotes may take time to appear after an application is submitted; an application is not confirmation of bound coverage. 3

The Hartford says eligible small-business buyers can get a free quote online in minutes or by phone, and can also buy through independent agents. Its public quote-and-buy portal shows steps from Basics through Payment and Confirmation. It also says buyers can purchase without an agent. Commercial auto for small businesses is not currently offered on that online path and may be quoted through a local agency or Tivly. Management-liability pages direct buyers to find a local agent. 14,13,20,19,29,31

Access to insurers

TechInsurance names insurance partners including The Hartford, Hiscox, Chubb and Travelers. These are examples of marketed relationships, not the identified contracting insurer for a quote; ask for the exact issuing entity and its California placement route. 8

Coverages described on Hartford sites may be offered by one or more property-and-casualty subsidiaries listed in the Legal Notice. Hartford Fire Insurance Company (NAIC 19682) is authorized in all U.S. states and the District of Columbia according to that notice, and California CDI independently confirms its California authorization. Employee-benefits pages also name Hartford Life and Accident Insurance Company. The reviewed sources do not identify the writing company that would appear on a specific SaaS, BOP or technology E&O policy. 16,33,22,36,40

Servicing and renewals

TechInsurance says it provides a dedicated account manager and online certificate access. Its instructions require an active policy for a certificate request and direct urgent requests to the account manager. 1,3

The reviewed About and Contact pages do not establish a renewal remarketing schedule, a contractual response-time commitment, or the scope of dedicated support for a complex growth-stage insurance program. 2,3

The Hartford says small-business policyholders can retrieve certificates of insurance online at any time, manage billing and policy details through My Account or its mobile app, and, for workers’ compensation, use pay-as-you-go premium based on actual payroll and a My Workers’ Comp Connection portal. Cyber policyholders are described as having access to a Cyber Center with training and related resources. The reviewed sources did not disclose a published schedule of certificate, endorsement or installment-service fees charged to the insured. 14,24,25,27,38
