CFC vs Relm Insurance

Distinguish technology-package IP protection, standalone IP insurance and AI-related content liability.

Introduction

An AI company worried about generated content may also be protecting its own code or facing a patent allegation. CFC markets a technology package with media/IP provisions and separate intellectual-property insurance. Relm's NOVAAI describes AI developer exposures, including generated-content disputes. These offerings raise different questions about defending a claim, enforcing the company's rights and covering liability from its product. 2 14 36

Key Differences Between CFC and Relm Insurance

Separate Infringement Defense from Enforcing Your Rights

CFC's standalone IP offering describes infringement defense, enforcement and patent exposures. Its technology brochure also includes media/IP protection, but those provisions should not be assumed to match the separate product. Relm's AI developer description does not establish blanket patent or enforcement coverage. Ask which rights, activities and remedies the offered forms actually address. 14 2 36

This distinction matters when a customer alleges that an AI output infringes and when the startup wants to pursue someone copying its own technology. Those are separate scenarios to put to underwriting; a shared IP catalogue label does not answer both. 14 36

A Wrap Requires the Underlying Exclusion to Be Visible

CFC's technology brochure describes a package combining E&O, cyber, media/IP and general liability, including liability arising from client contract breaches. Relm's PONTAAI describes an excess difference-in-conditions AI wrap. If a startup is considering a wrap over a package, provide the complete underlying wording and ask whether the disputed exposure is excluded, sublimited or already covered. The reviewed public materials do not establish that PONTAAI can be placed over a particular CFC policy. 2 37

CFC's application asks about products, contracts, security controls and IP procedures and is returned through the broker. That is useful preparation for the comparison: the same facts should support both proposals rather than allowing different descriptions of the product to drive an apparent coverage difference. 3 40

California Restrictions Must Stay Attached to Their Product

CFC's January 2026 management-liability brochure declines California-domiciled business. That restriction should not be extended to all CFC technology products, whose current California route remains unresolved in the reviewed public documentation. Relm's AI route is also unresolved. Neither a producer disclosure nor CFC's named Lloyd's syndicate identifies every policy's insurer. 11 1 4 31

CFC's MGA role and Relm's insurer/US producer structure make the issuing entity and participating capacity an essential part of the proposal, particularly where an IP policy and a technology package use different forms. 5 4 31

What to Confirm in Quotes

  • Identify whether output allegations, patent defense and enforcement of the startup's own rights are included, excluded or separately insured. 14 2 36
  • For any wrap, show the underlying exclusion, attachment and conditions for responding when the primary policy does not. 37 2
  • Confirm each insurer and California route; keep CFC's management-liability restriction distinct from technology eligibility. 4 11 31

Service Comparison

CFC vs Relm Insurance: documented services and availability

CriteriaCFCRelm Insurance
Business role

CFC is a specialist insurance provider operating an MGA model: a managing general agent performs underwriting functions for insurance capacity providers. Its disclosures identify CFC Underwriting Limited and the U.S. producer CFC USA, Inc.; the CFC brand should not be treated as the name of every policy’s insurer. 5,4

Relm Insurance is a specialty insurance business serving emerging industries, including artificial intelligence. Its Bermuda insurer and US distribution operation have distinct roles. 30,32,31

Relm identifies Relm Insurance Ltd. as its Bermuda-regulated insurer and Relm US Insurance Solutions Inc. as a US licensed producer. It describes its US operation as a managing general agent (MGA), an intermediary with delegated insurance authority. The Bermuda entity says it deals only through appropriately licensed brokers. 31,32

Application process

The U.S. technology application asks a senior staff member to complete it and return it to the company’s insurance broker. It requests revenue, funding, subsidiaries, products, major contracts, security controls, IP procedures and claims history. CFC’s Connect portal separately supports broker trading and describes a broker appointment process. 3,6

Relm provides an inquiry form requesting contact details, company name and location. Its US launch describes access through distribution partners, and the website states that Relm Insurance Ltd. deals through licensed brokers. The reviewed pages do not establish instant quoting or online binding. 40,32

Availability

CFC reports that CFC USA, Inc. holds producer licenses in all 50 states and Washington, D.C., plus excess and surplus lines authorization in California, Georgia, New York and Texas. It identifies its California licensing name as CFC General Insurance Agency, Inc. This is CFC’s disclosure, not an independently checked California license record or confirmation of product eligibility. 4

CFC’s January 2026 U.S. management-liability brochure lists California-domiciled business and standalone employment practices liability under risks it declines. This restriction is specific to the described management-liability offering; it does not establish a California exclusion for every CFC product. 11

The reviewed U.S. technology page, brochure and application do not establish the currently available admitted or surplus-lines route for a particular California startup. CFC announced admitted technology E&O in 2023, but the reviewed materials do not supply a current California product eligibility schedule. 1,2,3,29

Relm’s legal page lists California insurance producer license 6013054 for Relm US Insurance Solutions Inc. This is company-reported and was not independently verified in a regulator record; that row does not list a California surplus-lines license. 31

The reviewed AI product, US MGA and legal pages do not establish the issuing insurer, admitted or surplus-lines status, or placing broker for a California NOVAAI, PONTAAI or RESCAAI policy. California product availability remains to be confirmed for the applicant. 31,32,35

Access to insurers

CFC’s regulatory page identifies Lloyd’s Syndicate 1988, managed by Asta Managing Agency Ltd. The reviewed U.S. technology materials do not name the insurer or participating syndicates for a California buyer’s actual policy; ask for those names on the quote and declarations. 4,2,3

Relm’s fronting announcement names Trisura Specialty Insurance Company in connection with US digital-asset risks, including D&O, cyber, technology E&O and crime. A fronting insurer issues the policy while another insurer supplies risk capacity. This announcement does not establish Trisura as the issuer of every Relm product or of a California AI policy. 39

Servicing and renewals

CFC says its cyber service includes threat monitoring and alerts, a response app and round-the-clock technical incident support. These are company-described services; access, scope and any conditions should be checked against the proposed policy. 7

The reviewed Connect and technology application pages do not specify a customer-facing renewal timetable, certificate turnaround or dedicated account-management commitment for California technology buyers. Confirm those arrangements with the placing broker. 6,3

The reviewed contact and terms pages provide general-inquiry and complaint channels but do not explain a customer self-service portal, certificate turnaround, endorsement process or renewal timetable. Ask which tasks your broker, the MGA and the issuing insurer will handle. 40,42
