Is Inland Marine Insurance right for you?

  • Contractors moving equipment between jobsites

An equipment floater is the inland marine form for tools and machinery that travel between your yard and the job.

  • Installers

Materials and equipment you’re installing at a customer’s site call for installation coverage, a different form from an equipment floater.

  • Businesses shipping goods

Trip transit and motor truck cargo are separate inland marine types, so check which one fits how your goods move.

  • Offices protecting records and receivables

Accounts receivable and valuable papers are inland marine types too, worth asking about if your records would be hard to replace.

When to get Inland Marine Insurance

  • 01

    You bought new equipment

Send the details to your Spot team and ask whether it has to be scheduled individually before it goes out to a job.

  • 02

You’ve won a job in another state

Check the policy’s territorial limits against where the equipment will be stored, used and transported.

  • 03

You rent out or lend equipment

Policies can restrict coverage for property rented or lent to someone else. Ask how yours treats it before the equipment leaves your yard.

  • 04

    You’re shipping goods

Goods in transit may call for trip transit or motor truck cargo coverage. Ask which one fits, and don’t assume the carrier’s insurance protects your goods.

  • 05

    Your equipment values have changed

Update the inventory so per-item limits and the valuation basis match what the equipment is worth today.

Inland Marine Insurance questions

Also known as contractor’s equipment insurance, equipment floater insurance, installation floater insurance, tools and equipment insurance and tool insurance.

Our broker already handles our contractor policies. Can they place inland marine too?

Usually. Your Spot team adds the contractor’s equipment schedule to the work your broker already does, and Spot takes no commissions on premiums. You can also move the floater to a different broker.

What does inland marine cover?

If your business moves equipment between sites or ships goods, it can cover those specialized property exposures. It’s a family of forms, such as equipment floaters, installation coverage and trip transit, and a single policy won’t necessarily include every type.

Does it cover mechanical breakdown?

Not necessarily. Wording can limit mechanical breakdown, wear and tear, unexplained disappearance and loss of use. Equipment breakdown is a separate coverage.

How is it different from commercial property?

Your property policy may include some off-site terms, but tools on jobsites and goods in transit are where inland marine comes in. Spot compares the two, along with cargo and equipment breakdown, so you can see where each applies.

What do I need for an inland marine quote?

An inventory with descriptions and values, a description of your operations, prior losses and the limits you want. Mark anything you rent, borrow or hold for others.
