Lockton vs Marsh

How Lockton’s privately held model and US inquiry path compare with Marsh’s global broking group, MMA middle-market channel and published US compensation guide.

Introduction

Marsh describes advising clients across many countries and industries, including technology, and distinguishes core Marsh broking from Marsh McLennan Agency’s middle-market offering. 23 43 Lockton describes private ownership and a dedicated U.S. technology team. 20 2

A company that has outgrown a single-office program and is running a formal broker request for proposal is choosing which brokerage holding structure and which U.S. legal entity will handle placement—Marsh LLC / Marsh USA LLC language in Marsh’s compensation guide versus Lockton Companies, LLC—plus whether Marsh McLennan Agency or core Marsh is the right Marsh door. Scale claims are marketing, not a coverage ranking. 40 13

Key Differences Between Lockton and Marsh

Group Architecture

Ask which Marsh letterhead—Marsh, Marsh McLennan Agency, or another affiliate—will sign. Lockton similarly uses Series and affiliates. 44 13

Compensation Documents

Marsh publishes a U.S. compensation guide covering retail commissions, client fees, wholesale and other amounts. Lockton’s Terms of Business cover overlapping categories including contingents and Lockton Re. Compare the actual exhibit, not the existence of a PDF. 39 13

Cyber Analytics

Marsh Cyber Insurance and Marsh McLennan Agency cyber pages describe brokerage plus analytics products such as Stratus. 30 27 Lockton describes inform, improve and insure cyber steps. Analytics brands are not policy limits. 3

What to Confirm in Quotes

  • Exact Marsh or Marsh McLennan Agency contracting entity versus Lockton company. 44 13
  • Written compensation using Marsh’s guide categories and Lockton’s terms. 39 13
  • California license on the producing entity. 22
  • Which cyber analytics, if any, are in the fee. 29

Service Comparison

Lockton vs Marsh: documented services and availability

CriteriaLocktonMarsh
Business role

Lockton’s US site describes the firm as an independent insurance brokerage that arranges customized risk, employee benefits and retirement solutions. US Terms of Business treat Lockton Companies, LLC and affiliated Lockton companies as intermediaries that market, place and service insurance, not as the risk-bearing insurer on a placed policy. 1,13,20

Public US terms name Lockton Companies, LLC (and Series, subsidiaries and affiliates) as the brokerage group and Lockton, Inc. as the website operator. Certificates produced by Lockton also use the California DBA Lockton Insurance Brokers, LLC. Confirm the legal name on any broker-of-record or services agreement; these pages do not by themselves establish which entity would be appointed for a California company. 13,14,21

Lockton-produced certificates print California license number 0F15767 for Lockton Companies, LLC DBA Lockton Insurance Brokers, LLC. Current license status, classes and expiration remain independently unverified. Treat California producer authority as unresolved until a regulator record or the proposed engagement papers are checked. 21,22

Marsh’s US compensation guide states that, as an insurance broker, Marsh’s role is to facilitate placement of insurance coverage on behalf of clients. The transparency page describes determining appropriate insurers and negotiating with those insurers. Marsh is not identified in these sources as the insurer that issues or pays the policy. 40,39,24

Current Marsh materials use more than one US legal name. The compensation guide (copyright 2024, Marsh LLC) refers to Marsh LLC and Marsh USA LLC entering client agreements. The transparency page instead names Marsh LLC and Marsh USA Inc. Marsh McLennan Agency is described as a wholly owned Marsh subsidiary. A 2006 California decision caption used MARSH USA, INC., dba MARSH RISK AND INSURANCE SERVICES, license 0437153. Confirm the exact contracting producer on the proposal and license documents; current California license status remains unverified. 40,39,41,42,23,53

Application process

Public US application starts as an inquiry: the US contact form (Ask an Expert) and industry pages invite buyers to connect with a team. The privacy notice refers to soliciting an insurance policy quote. The Cyber & Technology page publishes cyber@lockton.com. Reviewed pages do not describe a self-serve bind flow, published quote turnaround, or an unauthenticated online application that issues a policy without a Lockton representative. 12,1,15,3,14

The public Marsh path to speak with a broker is an inquiry, not an online bind. Contact pages ask you to choose an inquiry type, including a sales or RFP route. The business-inquiry page says to complete a form and that a representative will respond within 48 hours; it points existing-policy certificate, billing and policy questions elsewhere. The inquiry page does not display premiums or bind coverage. The 48-hour response time is a company statement, not a binding or service guarantee. 37,38,43

Marsh describes a broker-led placement: identifying insurers for the risk, negotiating coverage and price, and, in core US broking segments, disclosing quotes and premium indications received. It may share incumbent or competing insurer names, pricing objectives, expiring terms, or give an insurer a last look when it believes that is in the client’s interest or the client instructs it. Those market practices are disclosure statements, not a guaranteed outcome or turnaround. 40,39

Fees and compensation

US Terms of Business say Lockton may be paid insurer commissions (a percentage of premium), negotiated client fees in lieu of or in addition to commissions, additional compensation such as contingent or supplemental commissions, insurer service fees (including for some managing-general-agency or analytics work), compensation involving affiliate Lockton Re, LLC on reinsurance placements, and interest or premium-finance related income. Commissions are described as fully earned at inception unless law or insurer contracts say otherwise. The terms tell clients to ask their Lockton representative for account-specific compensation. No public fee schedule, commission percentages or typical startup pricing appears on the reviewed pages. 13

Marsh’s US compensation guide says it may be paid by insurer retail commissions, client fees (often in a written Client Service Agreement, sometimes crediting commissions), wholesale commissions, insurer consulting compensation, supplemental commissions, compensation for facilities or other insurer arrangements, interest on premium accounts, and other benefits. Marsh says it does not accept contingent commissions on domestic placements for US clients in core broking operations, except for employee health and benefits or when acting as managing general agent or underwriting manager; Marsh McLennan Agency does accept contingent commissions. Standard public premium ranges or a startup fee schedule were not found. Request an account-specific disclosure of commissions, fees, contingent or supplemental amounts, premium finance charges and any affiliated-market compensation. 40,39,52

Servicing and renewals

Casualty pages say the same dedicated service team stays with the client through the process. Technology pages describe a round-the-clock service model. Terms of Business cover day-to-day servicing, risk control, insurance renewal services, policy administration and the use of intermediaries (including Lockton affiliates) in servicing and placement. Property pages say the team that meets the client also negotiates with markets rather than a remote broking center. A public client-portal feature list was not established beyond a Lockton Portal login link on the US site. 5,2,13,6,1

Marsh markets ongoing consulting, analytics and client-advisory services alongside brokerage, including Marsh Risk Consulting, risk analytics and captive solutions named in the compensation guide. MMA describes risk-control, benchmarking and claims management as part of casualty and property service. Core US broking segments pledge to disclose quotes automatically; other segments do so upon request. Public pages do not document a self-serve policy portal comparable to an online-only insurer, and they do not publish a universal renewal timetable. 40,39,45,48,49,24

Claims assistance

Lockton describes claims advocacy as a service, not as the insurer paying claims. Technology, D&O and fiduciary pages say a Professional & Executive Risk Claims team, including insurance and claims counsel, is integrated with the broking team and that claims advocacy is not treated as a profit center. Loss-prevention pages describe claims consulting: investigations, mapping facts to policies, preparing presentations, and discussions with insurer lawyers and loss adjusters. Workers’ compensation pages mention claims service advocates. Terms of Business include claims handling and claims processing among Lockton’s intermediary services and state Lockton is not responsible for an insurer’s solvency or willingness to pay. These descriptions do not establish claims outcomes or handling quality. 2,4,9,11,7,13

Marsh’s Claims Management service describes acting as an advisor among the business, insurer and third-party administrator: preparing, presenting and negotiating claims. Its cyber claims-advocacy page says specialists review claims, support litigation management, develop proof of loss with forensic accountants and advocate with insurers. MMA similarly describes claims advocacy as a carrier liaison on cyber matters and as part of property and casualty service. These are descriptions of assistance. They do not establish that Marsh pays claims, that a claim will be covered, or that recovery amounts cited in marketing were independently checked. 32,31,46,49
