Alliance Risk vs Lockton

Compare Alliance Risk and Lockton for a technology company seeking international program coordination, contract review and defined claims advocacy.

Introduction

A technology company adding an overseas operation may need a coordinated insurance design rather than another isolated policy. Lockton’s technology practice explicitly describes international program design and contract review. Alliance Risk offers a technology-focused placement and policy-review process. Compare the work each team proposes for the new operation, including where its service and placement responsibilities stop. 13 1 10

Key Differences Between Alliance Risk and Lockton

Require a Country-Specific Plan from the Broader Service Promise

Lockton markets technology expertise across software, hardware and other technology sectors, with a round-the-clock service model. The reviewed practice pages do not publish a minimum revenue or funding stage. A small company should request confirmation that the account fits the proposed team, then ask what international design actually includes for its countries and activities. 13 12

Alliance Risk’s technology E&O process asks for contracts and operational information and offers a review of existing coverage. That is a useful input to the same exercise, but its technology marketing does not by itself establish a foreign-policy network or a particular overseas placement. Require both proposals to distinguish analysis, insurance placement and ongoing administration. 10 1

Do Not Mistake Catalogue Evidence for an Exclusion

Alliance Risk has a direct technology E&O service page. Lockton’s canonical catalogue instead draws on its technology, cyber, casualty and financial-lines offering pages; technology E&O was not added solely from educational articles. That sourcing distinction is not a finding that Lockton cannot arrange it. Ask Lockton to specify the proposed technology-liability solution before comparing forms. 10 13 14 21

Lockton’s terms also explain that it is not obligated to use a particular insurer and generally does not have authority to bind insurers except in disclosed circumstances. Neither its unnamed market relationships nor Alliance Risk’s admitted and surplus-lines access establishes a carrier for the applicant. For international work, a market plan is more informative than a general statement about access. 24 18 1

Put Claims Work and Compensation in the Engagement Letter

Lockton describes an integrated Professional & Executive Risk Claims team and consulting that can include policy mapping, claim presentations and discussion with insurer lawyers and adjusters. Those are broker services, not an assurance of payment or legal representation on every matter. Alliance Risk’s reviewed public pages do not define an equally detailed claims assignment, so request the scope directly rather than assuming it is absent. 13 22 24 7 1

Lockton’s terms allow negotiated fees, commissions and other compensation, and describe commissions as fully earned at inception subject to law and insurer contracts. Alliance Risk’s terms contemplate commissions and possible service or cancellation charges. A company that may restructure its program after expansion should ask how compensation changes if a policy or engagement ends midterm. 24 3

What to Confirm in Quotes

  • Which countries, operations and contracts will the team analyze, and which local or international policy placements are actually proposed?
  • What technology E&O form is available, and how will it coordinate with cyber, general liability and any overseas cover?
  • Which claims-consulting tasks and response commitments are included, and when is separate counsel or a separately paid service needed?
  • Confirm the contracting producer and California authority, then the insurer schedule and treatment of fees or commissions on midterm changes. Lockton’s company-issued California certificate header and Alliance Risk’s license page are not independent current-license verification. 32 5

Service Comparison

Alliance Risk vs Lockton: documented services and availability

CriteriaAlliance RiskLockton
Customer focus

Alliance Risk markets to technology businesses from pre-seed through public-company stages, including SaaS, hardware, fintech, healthtech and AI. 1

Lockton markets to organizations seeking risk, benefits and retirement brokerage. Its US technology practice says it works with clients in electronic hardware, information technology, internet, medical equipment, semiconductors, software and telecommunications. Separate pages address private-equity firms, including portfolio-company programs. The reviewed pages do not publish a minimum company size, funding stage or revenue floor for technology clients. 12,13,21

Application process

The quote page starts with a contact request for company, website, contact details and a message. It advertises a free, no-obligation quote; the visible form does not provide a bindable offer. 6

For technology E&O, Alliance Risk requests service details, revenue, employee count, major client contracts, existing coverage, five-year claims history and customer concentration. It says it reviews the current program and approaches specialist carriers. 10

The general quote page advertises a quote within 24 hours, while the technology page gives 48–72 hours for standard software risks and five to ten business days for hardware, fintech, healthtech and AI. Treat timing as company estimates, not a binding deadline. 6,1

Public US application starts as an inquiry: the US contact form (Ask an Expert) and industry pages invite buyers to connect with a team. The privacy notice refers to soliciting an insurance policy quote. The Cyber & Technology page publishes cyber@lockton.com. Reviewed pages do not describe a self-serve bind flow, published quote turnaround, or an unauthenticated online application that issues a policy without a Lockton representative. 23,12,26,14,25

Access to insurers

Alliance Risk reports using admitted and excess-and-surplus-lines markets for startups. The reviewed technology, quote and legal pages do not identify the insurer that would issue a California buyer’s policy. 1,6,3

Lockton says it is not obligated to use any particular insurer, is generally not authorized to bind insurers except in circumstances it says it will try to disclose, and does not guarantee placement on acceptable terms. Cyber pages refer to insurer partners without naming them. The workers’ compensation page claims access to more than 100 regional, global and program markets without listing those markets. Surplus-lines insurers may appear in a proposal when admitted markets cannot meet requested terms. Named issuing companies for a buyer’s policies were not disclosed on the reviewed pages. 24,14,18

Servicing and renewals

Alliance Risk offers a no-charge review of existing technology E&O policies, including gaps, retroactive dates and market alternatives. This is a company-described service, not evidence of review quality. 10

Alliance Risk advertises online program access and 24/7 support. Its contact page lists weekday telephone hours of 9am–6pm EST; an after-hours response commitment and renewal timetable were not established in those pages. 8,7

Casualty pages say the same dedicated service team stays with the client through the process. Technology pages describe a round-the-clock service model. Terms of Business cover day-to-day servicing, risk control, insurance renewal services, policy administration and the use of intermediaries (including Lockton affiliates) in servicing and placement. Property pages say the team that meets the client also negotiates with markets rather than a remote broking center. A public client-portal feature list was not established beyond a Lockton Portal login link on the US site. 16,13,24,17,12

Fees and compensation

Alliance Risk’s terms allow service, installment, cancellation and flat fees, and fees or commissions from insurers or other third parties. The terms do not state amounts or commission rates. A free quote does not establish free ongoing service. 3,6

US Terms of Business say Lockton may be paid insurer commissions (a percentage of premium), negotiated client fees in lieu of or in addition to commissions, additional compensation such as contingent or supplemental commissions, insurer service fees (including for some managing-general-agency or analytics work), compensation involving affiliate Lockton Re, LLC on reinsurance placements, and interest or premium-finance related income. Commissions are described as fully earned at inception unless law or insurer contracts say otherwise. The terms tell clients to ask their Lockton representative for account-specific compensation. No public fee schedule, commission percentages or typical startup pricing appears on the reviewed pages. 24
