Check which services each quote covers

We work with brokers to take your submission to market, then show which services and people each proposal actually schedules, so “E&O” on the quote doesn’t hide a form that skips your work.

Spot handles the procurement, sending it to the insurers and markets that cover businesses like yours and chasing every quote.

Is Professional Liability (E&O) Insurance right for you?

  • Consultants and agencies

Your product is advice and execution, so a client’s claim about a bad outcome is the risk that matters most.

  • Service businesses signing client contracts

Clients may require proof of professional liability before they’ll sign or pay.

  • Firms that rely on a business owner’s policy

Don’t assume your BOP includes professional liability. Check it, and buy a separate policy if it doesn’t.

  • Practices switching insurers

Claims-made coverage depends on your retroactive date and any extended reporting, so changing insurers needs a plan.

Check the required wording against the policy before you sign, while there’s still time to adjust either one.

Coverage follows scheduled services. Confirm the new work is on the policy before you start billing for it.

Ask about an extended reporting period for later claims arising from earlier work.

  • 05

    Your E&O renewal is approaching

Compare the each-claim limit, the aggregate and the deductible, and ask whether defense costs reduce what’s left.

Professional Liability (E&O) Insurance questions

Also known as professional liability insurance, errors and omissions insurance, E&O insurance and professional indemnity insurance.

Our broker has handled our E&O for years. Do we start over with Spot?

No. Spot works with that broker, building the submission from your current terms and retroactive date, and takes no commissions on premiums. Switching to a broker with more clients in your profession is also an option.

Is E&O insurance the same as professional liability insurance?

Often, yes. The names are used for the same kind of coverage for professional services, and outside the US it’s often called professional indemnity. Check which services and which people the quote schedules.

Does general liability or a BOP cover this?

Don’t count on it. General liability is built around bodily injury and property damage, and a business owner’s policy may not include professional liability. Spot checks what you hold and whether you need a separate policy.

Is this the same as technology E&O or medical malpractice?

Not necessarily. Technology work may use a separate technology E&O form, and medical malpractice is a specialized health care product. Ask which form the quote uses.

What is a retroactive date?

It’s the date from which prior work can be covered under a claims-made policy. Confirm it on every quote, and bring your current date when you change insurers.
