Equipment Breakdown Insurance in South Carolina

South Carolina's Boiler Safety Act says all pressure vessels are exempt from the chapter, so do not expect a state certificate for an unfired tank. Power boilers and high-pressure, high-temperature water boilers need an annual certificate inspection that is internal where possible, plus an external inspection under pressure if possible. The required inspections are made by a special inspector, who may inspect boilers insured or operated by that inspector's company. 1,2

What Is Equipment Breakdown?

Equipment-breakdown coverage can help repair covered machinery or building equipment after a mechanical or electrical failure. It fits businesses that depend on equipment to operate; check whether lost income, spoilage and utility failures are included. Read the national Equipment breakdown guide.

Power-boiler certificate inspectionAnnual internal inspection; if an internal inspection is not possible, as complete as possible, plus an external inspection under pressure if possible. 1

What to Watch for in South Carolina

  • Unfired Tanks Are Outside the Boiler Act

The act exempts all pressure vessels from regulation under the chapter. An equipment-breakdown policy may still cover air receivers and process tanks. Ask the insurer to schedule them even though LLR will not issue a pressure-vessel certificate for them. 1

  • The Certificate Inspection Runs Through a Special Inspector

Special inspectors may inspect boilers insured or operated by their companies, and the state does not pay their salary. Evidence of a timely inspection may be a certification of insurance showing the boiler was inspected and approved, or a report from a certified special inspector. The statute does not say you must buy insurance, but the inspection path is a special inspector rather than a routine state visit. 1,2

  • Farms, Small Apartments, and Small Heaters Drop Out

Farm boilers used only for agriculture or horticulture, and heating boilers in private residences or apartment houses of fewer than six family units, are exempt from the inspection and certificate sections. A hot-water supply boiler with ASME-National Board safety relief valves, fired by oil, gas, or electricity, is outside the chapter when none of 200,000 Btu per hour, 210°F, or 120 gallons is exceeded. 1

  • A Two-Month Grace and a Small Filing Fee

The statute allows a two-month grace period between certificate inspections, though the cross-reference points at a subsection other than the one that lists the intervals. The statute caps a filing fee at $50 per facility or certificate. The Department FAQ states the registration and inspection-report fee is $25. Neither figure is a premium. 1,2
