Idaho Equipment Breakdown Insurance Guide
Idaho’s official 2010 history index records repeal of the statewide Boiler and Pressure Vessel Safety Rules effective March 29, 2010, while DOPL’s trade-permit page, last updated March 31, 2023, lists a hydronic-tubing/boiler inspection. Treat permit inspections, workplace safety, and an insurance claim as separate questions: your policy’s covered-equipment definition, breakdown trigger, schedule, limits, and business-income terms control what it may pay. 1,3,4
What Is Equipment Breakdown?
Equipment-breakdown coverage can help repair covered machinery or building equipment after a mechanical or electrical failure. It fits businesses that depend on equipment to operate; check whether lost income, spoilage and utility failures are included. Read the national Equipment breakdown guide.
What to Watch for in Idaho
Separate legacy boiler rules from permit inspections
Idaho’s 2010 official history index lists IDAPA 17.06.01 through 17.06.05 as chapter repeals effective March 29, 2010. DOPL’s trade-permit page, last updated March 31, 2023, separately lists hydronic-tubing/boiler work as an inspection type. The old periodic boiler-rule framework is not evidence of a current insurance mandate or a current statewide operating-certificate duty; for installation or replacement work, check the permit and inspection requirements that apply to that project and location. 1,3
An inspection is not a policy promise
A published 2015 Hartford Steam Boiler form says the insured remains responsible for complying with applicable boiler and pressure-vessel regulations and offers to perform an inspection, at the insured’s option, when covered equipment that is also covered property requires an inspection to comply with those regulations. The same form makes payment depend on defined covered causes and covered property. It is an example form, not your policy: ask the insurer to identify the forms and schedule that apply to your business before treating an inspection or certificate as evidence of coverage. 4
Check equipment and downtime terms separately
Equipment breakdown, property damage, and lost income are distinct policy questions. In the HSB 2015 example, business-income payment is tied to an actual loss during a period of restoration that results directly from a necessary total or partial interruption; the form also defines covered equipment and location/ownership conditions. Ask for your own policy’s covered-equipment definition, applicable limits and deductibles, business-income period, and any spoilage sublimit rather than assuming a property policy automatically pays for a shutdown. 4
Do not turn general business guidance into a line mandate
Idaho’s business resource says insurance requirements depend on business activity and distinguishes coverages required by law from optional products; its examples do not establish that a particular company must buy equipment-breakdown insurance. Ask your agent to identify any law or contract that applies to your business separately from the policy terms you are considering. 2
Who Regulates Insurance in Idaho

Surplus-lines tax and stamping office
Reported tax rate: 1.5% of premium when Idaho is the home state for property and casualty coverage Idaho’s surplus-lines tax is 1.5%. For property-and-casualty insurance other than workers’ compensation, if Idaho is the insured’s home state the full premium is taxed regardless of where covered risks are located; other lines follow the statutory allocation rule. Surplus-lines policies do not receive Idaho guaranty-association protection. 7,8,10
Providers With Documented State Licenses
No provider in Spot’s research documents both a state license record and this coverage line. This does not establish that providers are unlicensed. Check the regulator’s license lookup and confirm availability with a provider when requesting a quote.
Questions to Ask Before You Buy in Idaho
- Which boilers, refrigeration systems, HVAC units, electrical equipment, or other machines meet this policy’s definition of covered equipment, and must they be listed at a scheduled location?
- What event qualifies as a covered breakdown, and how does the form treat wear, maintenance, or a condition that can be corrected by routine service?
- What business-income limit, restoration period, deductible or waiting period, and spoilage sublimit apply after a covered breakdown?
- If you are installing or replacing a boiler, which local or state trade permit and inspection apply to that work, and does the insurer offer a separate inspection service?
Equipment Breakdown in Idaho: FAQ
Does a boiler inspection or certificate mean Idaho requires equipment-breakdown insurance? 1,2
No such conclusion follows from an inspection record. Idaho’s official 2010 history index records repeal of the five Boiler and Pressure Vessel Safety Rules chapters effective March 29, 2010; Idaho’s general business insurance page says legal requirements depend on the business activity. Check the current permit authority for any equipment-specific safety duty and check your contract separately for insurance requirements. 1,2
Will equipment-breakdown coverage pay for lost income after a machine fails? 4
Only the terms of your policy can answer that. In HSB’s published 2015 example form, business-income coverage is limited to actual loss during the restoration period that results directly from a necessary total or partial business interruption; definitions, schedules, limits, and other conditions also apply. Ask the insurer to point to the applicable form and declarations for your policy. 4
