Equipment Breakdown Insurance in Rhode Island

Rhode Island's active boiler rule requires an annual internal inspection of power boilers and high-pressure, high-temperature water boilers where construction permits, plus an annual external inspection under normal operating conditions. Low-pressure boilers, hot-water heaters, and hot-water storage tanks are inspected every two years. Unfired pressure vessels are inspected every three years, internally where construction permits. Insurers must tell the chief inspector within five business days when boiler insurance is written, cancelled, not renewed, or suspended. 1,2

What Is Equipment Breakdown?

Equipment-breakdown coverage can help repair covered machinery or building equipment after a mechanical or electrical failure. It fits businesses that depend on equipment to operate; check whether lost income, spoilage and utility failures are included. Read the national Equipment breakdown guide.

What to Watch for in Rhode Island

  • Fifteen Psi, Six Inches, and the Small Heater Test

The chapter does not apply to pressure vessels at or below 15 psig with no size limit, or to vessels that do not exceed a 6-inch inside diameter, width, height, or cross section, with no limit on length or pressure. A directly fired hot-water supply boiler is outside the chapter when none of 200,000 Btu per hour, 210°F, or 120 gallons is exceeded, if it has ASME-National Board approved safety valves. 2

  • The Company Pays Its Authorized Inspector

The administrator, through the chief inspector, may commission an authorized inspector employed by the division or by an insurance company authorized to insure boilers against explosion in Rhode Island, if that person holds a certificate of competency. The company pays its inspector. The statute does not require you to buy explosion coverage. The Department of Labor and Training Boiler Section also inspects commercial and public buildings. 3,5

  • Insurance Changes Are Reported in Five Business Days

All insurance companies must notify the chief inspector within five business days of boilers or pressure vessels on which insurance is written, cancelled, not renewed, or suspended because of unsafe conditions. Losing the policy can change who inspects next. It does not remove the posted certificate. 1

  • The Active Rule Adopts the 2025 Code Editions

The active inspection rule adopts ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code Edition 2025 and National Board Edition 2025. A certificate that finds the object safe states the pressure limit and must be posted. Match new or repaired objects to those editions when you ask the insurer what equipment the breakdown form will accept. 1,4
