Equipment Breakdown Insurance in New Hampshire

For new New Hampshire boilers and pressure vessels subject to RSA 157-A, the rule effective September 19, 2026 requires notice, inspection and a certificate before operation. Recurring inspection intervals then differ by boiler type and, for pressure vessels, corrosion status. Check the exact unit and exemption category before aligning state records with equipment and downtime terms in a quote. 3,2,1

What Is Equipment Breakdown?

Equipment-breakdown coverage can help repair covered machinery or building equipment after a mechanical or electrical failure. It fits businesses that depend on equipment to operate; check whether lost income, spoilage and utility failures are included. Read the national Equipment breakdown guide.

What to Watch for in New Hampshire

  • Ask how the state classifies each pressure vessel

New Hampshire requires biennial certificate inspection for pressure vessels subject to internal corrosion. For vessels not subject to internal corrosion, the commissioner sets the interval; internal inspection is not required when contents are known to be noncorrosive to the vessel material or adequately treated with a corrosion inhibitor, provided construction follows the rules. Keep the corrosion basis and state inspection interval with the unit record instead of assuming every vessel is on the same two-year cycle. 2

  • Schedule notice and certification before starting a new unit

For a new boiler or pressure vessel subject to RSA 157-A, Lab 1200, effective September 19, 2026, requires the owner or designee to notify the department in writing and request inspection. The department schedules the inspection, assigns a jurisdiction number and issues a report; the unit may not operate until inspection is complete and a certificate is issued. Put those steps before commissioning in the startup plan, after checking the statutory exemptions. 3,1

  • Check the full exemption section before assuming a unit is covered by inspection rules

New Hampshire exempts the inspection requirements in RSA 157-A:8, 9-a and 10 for buildings used exclusively as private residences or apartment houses with fewer than three family units, then separately lists boiler, pressure-vessel and hot-water-heater exclusions. Pressure-vessel examples include certain federally controlled, transport, vehicle, rail, small-volume/pressure, cold-water, pump-pressurized and Group I refrigerant equipment. Match the unit to the exact category and conditions; an exemption from inspection is not an insurance exclusion or grant. 1,2

  • Model downtime from the policy schedule, not the inspection certificate

A 2015 HSB form is a dated wording example. It applies Property Damage to covered property at a location shown in the declarations. Business Income pays actual loss during the period of restoration only when it results directly from a necessary total or partial interruption caused by a Covered Cause of Loss; Extra Expense covers reasonable and necessary expenses to operate during that period. Each coverage has a declared limit. A time deductible applies only if shown in the declarations, and Business Income is subject to coinsurance unless the declarations say otherwise. Ask the insurer to identify the machines and New Hampshire locations and show the Business Income values and limit, any time deductible, coinsurance basis and restoration period in the actual quote and policy. This 2015 specimen does not establish current New Hampshire availability or your contract. 4

Surplus-lines tax and stamping office

Reported tax rate: 3% on the New Hampshire allocation; other-state allocations use those states’ rates and fees New Hampshire charges 3% on gross premium allocated to New Hampshire; for multistate coverage, premium allocated elsewhere is taxed at the rates and fees applicable in those jurisdictions, less qualifying returned premium. The policy notice states that the New Hampshire Guaranty Association will not be liable for surplus-lines policies; placement ordinarily requires proof that admitted coverage cannot be obtained. 9,10,11

Providers With Documented State Licenses

No provider in Spot’s research documents both a state license record and this coverage line. This does not establish that providers are unlicensed. Check the regulator’s license lookup and confirm availability with a provider when requesting a quote.

Questions to Ask Before You Buy in New Hampshire

  1. For each new boiler or pressure vessel subject to RSA 157-A, who will give written notice, request the inspection and obtain the certificate before operation?
  2. For each pressure vessel, what evidence supports the corrosive or noncorrosive classification and resulting inspection interval?
  3. What equipment and New Hampshire locations appear in the quote, and what Business Income values and limit, any time deductible, coinsurance basis and period of restoration apply after a covered breakdown that causes a necessary total or partial interruption?

Equipment Breakdown in New Hampshire: FAQ

Are New Hampshire pressure vessels all inspected every two years? 2

No. Vessels subject to internal corrosion have biennial certificates. The commissioner sets intervals for vessels not subject to internal corrosion, and an internal inspection may not be required when the statute’s noncorrosive-content and construction conditions are met. 2

Does a New Hampshire inspection certificate determine what an insurer will pay? 3,4

No. The certificate is part of the state safety and operating process. The policy and declarations set covered equipment, covered causes, limits and interruption terms. 3,4
