Equipment Breakdown Insurance in Ohio

Ohio inspects power boilers and high-pressure, high-temperature water boilers internally, externally, and under operating conditions at least once a year, unless the superintendent has approved a biennial inspection. Low-pressure boilers are inspected externally every year and, except for cast iron, internally at least every three years. An insurer may commission special inspectors only for boilers and pressure vessels its policy covers; that route is not a requirement to buy equipment-breakdown coverage. 1,3

What Is Equipment Breakdown?

Equipment-breakdown coverage can help repair covered machinery or building equipment after a mechanical or electrical failure. It fits businesses that depend on equipment to operate; check whether lost income, spoilage and utility failures are included. Read the national Equipment breakdown guide.

What to Watch for in Ohio

  • Process Boilers Start on a Three-Year Cycle

Process boilers are inspected internally, externally, and under operating conditions at least every three years. A five-year interval exists only if the superintendent approves the continuous water-treatment records in § 4104.13. Ask the broker which objects are process boilers, and do not treat an approved longer inspection as a change in breakdown limits. 1,6

  • Small Residential Boilers Skip the Certificate Sections

Steam or vapor boilers at 15 psig or less, and hot-water boilers at or below 160 psig or 250°F, are exempt from the inspection and certificate sections when they are in a private residence or an apartment house of fewer than six family units. They still need the prescribed safety appliances. A breakdown quote can list them even though the state certificate does not. 2

  • Insurer Inspectors Cover Only Insured Objects

Since April 9, 2025, a company authorized to insure boilers and pressure vessels against explosion may designate certificate holders as special inspectors for objects covered by that company's policies. The superintendent commissions them, and the company pays them. Uninsured objects stay with a general inspector under Chapter 4104. Buying the policy is optional; it changes who inspects, not whether a certificate is required. 3

  • Unfired Vessels Are Checked at Fabrication

Section 4104.10 requires inspection of unfired pressure vessels during fabrication and filing of the manufacturer's data report. The section that was opened does not set a periodic in-service interval for those vessels. Schedule the boiler class on the certificate cycle, and ask the insurer how receivers and process tanks are scheduled on the equipment-breakdown form. 7

Surplus-lines tax and stamping office

Reported tax rate: 5% of gross premium, net of return premiums For Ohio-home-state surplus-lines placements, Ohio sets a 5% tax on gross premiums after returned premiums and requires the surplus-lines broker to collect it when the policy is delivered. A diligent search usually applies; a qualifying exempt commercial purchaser may request nonadmitted placement in writing after disclosure that authorized-market coverage may offer greater protection, and the policy requires a signed notice of no Ohio guaranty-association benefits. 11,12,13

Providers With Documented State Licenses

No provider in Spot’s research documents both a state license record and this coverage line. This does not establish that providers are unlicensed. Check the regulator’s license lookup and confirm availability with a provider when requesting a quote.

Questions to Ask Before You Buy in Ohio

  1. Which objects are power, low-pressure, or process boilers, and which inspection interval applies to each?
  2. Has the superintendent approved a biennial power-boiler inspection or a five-year process-boiler inspection, and are the water-treatment records current?
  3. If an insurer's special inspector will do the visit, which objects does that policy actually cover?
  4. What repair, extra expense, and business-income waiting period apply to each scheduled location, separate from the certificate of operation?

Equipment Breakdown in Ohio: FAQ

Does Ohio require equipment-breakdown insurance to operate a boiler? 3,4

No. An authorized insurer may supply special inspectors for objects its policy covers. Objects that are not insured are still inspected by a general inspector, and a certificate of operation is still required before a nonexempt boiler runs. 3,4

Does a cast-iron heating boiler need an internal inspection every three years? 1

No. Low-pressure boilers are inspected externally at least yearly. The internal inspection at least every three years does not apply to cast-iron boilers. 1
