Equipment Breakdown Insurance in Nevada
Nevada requires first inspections at installation for many covered boilers and pressure vessels, then sets different renewal intervals by equipment type. Moving a permitted unit cancels its operating permit, and a reinstalled unit needs inspection and a new permit. These operating rules are separate from insurance terms, so confirm each named unit and its downtime limits in the quote. 2,3
What Is Equipment Breakdown?
Equipment-breakdown coverage can help repair covered machinery or building equipment after a mechanical or electrical failure. It fits businesses that depend on equipment to operate; check whether lost income, spoilage and utility failures are included. Read the national Equipment breakdown guide.
Nevada Requirements
| Requirement | Details |
|---|---|
| Initial inspection and permit | For many covered categories, inspection is due on installation; an operating permit is required before operation unless a listed exception applies. 2 |
| Permit after relocation | A permit is canceled when the boiler or pressure vessel leaves its installed site; a reinstalled unit must be inspected and receive a new permit. 3 |
What to Watch for in Nevada
Treat a moved unit as a new permit task
Nevada cancels the operating permit when a boiler or pressure vessel is removed from its installed site. Reinstallation requires inspection and a new permit, including when ownership also changes. Before buying or moving used equipment, check the unit’s state permit and build inspection and approval time into the restart plan; a prior-site permit does not travel with it. 3,2
Match outage planning to the equipment class
Nevada requires installation inspection for the listed categories: power boilers have annual internal inspections where design permits plus an external inspection about six months later; low-pressure steam boilers are annual; low-pressure hot-water and hot-water-supply boilers are biennial; unfired and refrigeration pressure vessels are inspected at installation and at least every four years. The rule has other specific categories and qualifications, so use the unit’s actual classification and permit record rather than applying one boiler interval to every vessel. 2
Apply Nevada’s specific exceptions, not a blanket exemption
NAC 455C.114 has a full list of scope exceptions. For example, the single-family-residence exception does not include listed hot-water-supply boilers, low-pressure heating boilers, power boilers, or pressure vessels over the stated pressure or volume threshold; separate exceptions address federal control, certain transportation vessels, small-diameter vessels, cold-water vessels, and water heaters meeting all listed limits. Check every applicable condition and any granted exemption before treating a unit as outside the permit rules. 2,1
Check the quote’s location, limit and waiting period
A 2015 HSB form is a dated wording example. It applies Property Damage to covered property at a location shown in the declarations. Under that form, Business Income pays actual loss only when it results directly from a necessary total or partial interruption caused by a Covered Cause of Loss, during the defined period of restoration; Extra Expense covers reasonable and necessary expenses to operate during that period. A time deductible applies only if shown in the declarations, and Business Income is subject to coinsurance unless the declarations say otherwise. Ask the insurer to identify each Nevada location and critical unit and show the Business Income values and limit, any time deductible, the coinsurance basis and the restoration period in the actual quote and policy. The specimen does not establish current Nevada availability or your terms. 4
Who Regulates Insurance in Nevada

Surplus-lines tax and stamping office
Reported tax rate: Same tax rate as admitted coverage of the same kind; an approved filing fee may also apply When Nevada is the insured’s home state, Nevada taxes surplus-lines coverage at the rate imposed on similar admitted coverage and adds any approved filing fee; the rate therefore depends on the line and applicable fee approval. Nevada law requires a diligent effort to place coverage with authorized insurers except where the statutory exempt-commercial-purchaser conditions apply, and the policy must warn that the Nevada Insurance Guaranty Association will not cover the contract. 8,9,10,11
Providers With Documented State Licenses
No provider in Spot’s research documents both a state license record and this coverage line. This does not establish that providers are unlicensed. Check the regulator’s license lookup and confirm availability with a provider when requesting a quote.
Questions to Ask Before You Buy in Nevada
- Will a used boiler or pressure vessel be moved from its permitted site, and who will obtain the new Nevada inspection and operating permit?
- What inspection category, first-inspection date and renewal interval apply to each unit, including any refrigeration or unfired pressure vessel?
- Does the quote schedule each affected Nevada location and critical unit, and show the Business Income values and limit, any time deductible, whether coinsurance applies and how it is calculated, and the restoration period?
