Equipment Breakdown Insurance in North Dakota

North Dakota’s boiler rules set annual, three-year, or conditional inspection intervals by boiler class; only a narrow high-capacity, treated-water power-boiler group may use a 36-month internal interval. Unfired pressure vessels follow separate construction exceptions, and neither rule determines equipment-breakdown policy coverage. 2,3,5

What Is Equipment Breakdown?

Equipment-breakdown coverage can help repair covered machinery or building equipment after a mechanical or electrical failure. It fits businesses that depend on equipment to operate; check whether lost income, spoilage and utility failures are included. Read the national Equipment breakdown guide.

North Dakota Requirements

RequirementDetails
Hot-water boiler intervalHot-water heating and hot-water supply boilers are inspected every three years, except those in a nursing home, school, hospital, nursery school, or kindergarten, which are inspected annually. An inspector may require an internal inspection; a two-month grace period may elapse. 2
Power-boiler intervalPower boilers are inspected annually internally and externally, subject to a separate 36-month internal interval for qualifying units rated at least 100,000 lb/hr with supervised continuous water treatment and required records; external inspection remains annual. 2,1

What to Watch for in North Dakota

  • North Dakota’s boiler exemptions are specific

The statute excludes boilers under federal control, farm boilers used solely for agriculture, heating boilers in private residences or apartment buildings under six units, and hot-water supply boilers only when all ceilings hold: 200,000 Btu/hr input, 160 psi, and 250°F. Separate exceptions cover garage steam cleaners; tightly specified hobby boilers (under 10-inch inside diameter, at most 1.5 sq ft grate, and required safety devices); and espresso-machine boilers (at most 1.5 cu ft, 50 psi, and code-approved). These boiler exceptions do not decide the status of an unfired vessel. 1

  • Use the unfired-vessel rule for receivers and tanks

North Dakota’s separate rule generally requires ASME Section VIII construction and National Board registration for in-scope unfired vessels. Its stated exceptions are federal-control vessels; vessels no larger than 4 cu ft and 250 psig; vessels no larger than 1.5 cu ft and 600 psig; and vessels installed or ordered before November 1, 1987, subject to safe-maintenance and relief-device conditions. These are construction exceptions, not the boiler inspection schedule. 3

  • Low-pressure steam does not share the hot-water interval

North Dakota requires low-pressure steam boilers to be inspected annually; steel units alternate internal and external inspection, with certificates normally based on an internal inspection. Hot-water heating and supply boilers instead run on a three-year cycle, shortened to annual in listed care and education settings. Build maintenance windows around the actual boiler class. 2

  • The 36-month interval is conditional and internal only

The longer internal interval is limited to power boilers rated at least 100,000 lb/hr with continuous internal water treatment under qualified supervision, chief-inspector acceptance of required records, and continuing compliance. An external inspection and report are still due every 12 months for the certificate; adverse findings can return inspection to annual intervals. Budget outage and records review before relying on the exception. If seeking special-inspector service, the Department describes inspections as an initial and periodic program and coordinates qualified insurer inspectors; state the authority and certificate route in writing before scheduling. 1,2

  • Inspection access and equipment insurance are separate choices

North Dakota lets the Department appoint an insurer, owner-user, or authorized-agency inspector as a special inspector on an employer’s written request; that is an inspection route, not a general requirement to purchase insurance. CNA advertises repair and lost-income cover under its own product, but a state inspection route does not establish policy coverage or availability. A Missouri Farm Bureau BOP endorsement illustrates buyer-check fields: scheduled premises, a separate equipment-breakdown sublimit and deductible, and a business-income time deductible. It is an example form only, not evidence of terms available or issued in north dakota. 1,5,6,4

Equipment Breakdown in North Dakota: FAQ

Does North Dakota require equipment-breakdown insurance for a boiler inspection? 1

The statute permits the Department to appoint certain qualified insurer, owner-user, or authorized-agency inspectors as special inspectors on written request. It does not make equipment-breakdown insurance a universal requirement; confirm any separate lender, lease, or contract term. 1

Can I use the boiler exemptions for an air receiver? 1,3

No. Chapter 23.1-16 § 06 lists exempt boilers. North Dakota addresses unfired pressure-vessel construction separately in Administrative Code 33.1-14-10, with its own volume, pressure, federal-control, and pre-1987 exceptions. 1,3
