Lockton vs RiskCube

Compare Lockton and RiskCube for a technology company adding overseas operations, focusing on program design, binding authority and ongoing broker responsibility.

Introduction

Opening an overseas operation changes the brokerage assignment: the company needs to explain entities, contracts and activities across its new footprint. Lockton's technology practice explicitly markets international program design and contract review. RiskCube markets startup insurance and vendor-contract support. A useful comparison asks each team to describe the resulting program and its servicing responsibilities, rather than assuming a domestic policy catalogue resolves the expansion. 2 23 28

Key Differences Between Lockton and RiskCube

International Design Is an Engagement Deliverable

Lockton's technology service description creates a concrete starting point for asking about cross-border program design. It does not establish a country-by-country placement route or a minimum account size. RiskCube's reviewed catalogue and startup positioning do not settle that assignment either. Give both brokers the same entity and operations schedule, then request an explanation of which policies and local arrangements they propose. 2 27 23

Lockton also markets private-equity portfolio and transaction capabilities. Those services are scoped to that practice; a startup should not assume that every engagement includes the full private-equity offering. 10

Identify Who Negotiates and Who Can Bind

Lockton describes dedicated casualty teams and says its property team negotiates with markets rather than handing work to a remote broking center. Its terms nevertheless state that it is generally not authorized to bind insurers, subject to disclosed exceptions. RiskCube's terms require written binding confirmation and applicable conditions. A responsive broker and a completed submission are therefore distinct from confirmed coverage under either route. 5 6 13 26

Lockton's public technology page describes a round-the-clock service model, while RiskCube describes digital documents, certificates and renewals. Ask how the offered engagement handles a request arriving from a different time zone, including the person authorized to approve a change. Public service descriptions are not account-specific response commitments. 2 28

Read Compensation Together with the Exit Terms

Lockton's terms describe commissions as fully earned at inception unless law or insurer contracts provide otherwise, and allow negotiated fees and other compensation. RiskCube's disclosures allow fees and transaction charges despite its no-fee marketing. For a program likely to change during expansion, request the treatment of broker compensation when policies change or cancel, separately from the insurer's premium adjustment. 13 25

Both describe claims advocacy. Lockton's specialist-team description and RiskCube's human-led support establish services to scope, not a basis for predicting settlement quality. 11 28

What to Confirm in Quotes

  • What program design covers the named entities and countries, and who coordinates any local placements? 2 27
  • Who negotiates, services and confirms binding, and what response commitment applies across time zones? 13 26
  • Which legal producer and California authority apply, and what compensation remains payable after a change or cancellation? Lockton's certificate-header license and RiskCube's license list remain company-reported evidence. 21 13 24 25

Service Comparison

Lockton vs RiskCube: documented services and availability

CriteriaLocktonRiskCube
Customer focus

Lockton markets to organizations seeking risk, benefits and retirement brokerage. Its US technology practice says it works with clients in electronic hardware, information technology, internet, medical equipment, semiconductors, software and telecommunications. Separate pages address private-equity firms, including portfolio-company programs. The reviewed pages do not publish a minimum company size, funding stage or revenue floor for technology clients. 1,2,10

RiskCube markets to venture-backed startups from pre-seed through IPO and to other growing businesses, including small businesses. Its stated sectors include SaaS, AI, fintech, GovTech, space and Web3. 28

Access to insurers

Lockton says it is not obligated to use any particular insurer, is generally not authorized to bind insurers except in circumstances it says it will try to disclose, and does not guarantee placement on acceptable terms. Cyber pages refer to insurer partners without naming them. The workers’ compensation page claims access to more than 100 regional, global and program markets without listing those markets. Surplus-lines insurers may appear in a proposal when admitted markets cannot meet requested terms. Named issuing companies for a buyer’s policies were not disclosed on the reviewed pages. 13,3,7

RiskCube says it compares multiple insurers. Its terms permit placements through surplus-lines channels; the reviewed legal disclosures and catalogue do not identify the issuing insurer for a specific California applicant. 23,26,25,27

Application process

Public US application starts as an inquiry: the US contact form (Ask an Expert) and industry pages invite buyers to connect with a team. The privacy notice refers to soliciting an insurance policy quote. The Cyber & Technology page publishes cyber@lockton.com. Reviewed pages do not describe a self-serve bind flow, published quote turnaround, or an unauthenticated online application that issues a policy without a Lockton representative. 12,1,15,3,14

RiskCube describes one digital intake followed by AI-assisted and broker-reviewed quote comparison and digital purchase. The public application URL reviewed displayed a contact form rather than a complete underwriting flow. 23,33

For technology E&O, RiskCube asks for product, customer, revenue and contract details, plus prior claims or known incidents. It qualifies its advertised quote timing by risk profile and underwriting complexity. 29

RiskCube’s terms say quotes are not binders: written confirmation from the insurer or its authorized representative and required conditions must be satisfied before coverage is bound. 26

Servicing and renewals

Casualty pages say the same dedicated service team stays with the client through the process. Technology pages describe a round-the-clock service model. Terms of Business cover day-to-day servicing, risk control, insurance renewal services, policy administration and the use of intermediaries (including Lockton affiliates) in servicing and placement. Property pages say the team that meets the client also negotiates with markets rather than a remote broking center. A public client-portal feature list was not established beyond a Lockton Portal login link on the US site. 5,2,13,6,1

RiskCube describes platform access for policy management, certificate generation and renewal notifications. A certificate does not change coverage under its terms. 23,26

RiskCube says it reviews vendor insurance requirements and checks requested endorsements, including additional insured and waiver-of-subrogation language. Its terms warn that AI-assisted output can be incomplete or inaccurate. 28,26

Fees and compensation

US Terms of Business say Lockton may be paid insurer commissions (a percentage of premium), negotiated client fees in lieu of or in addition to commissions, additional compensation such as contingent or supplemental commissions, insurer service fees (including for some managing-general-agency or analytics work), compensation involving affiliate Lockton Re, LLC on reinsurance placements, and interest or premium-finance related income. Commissions are described as fully earned at inception unless law or insurer contracts say otherwise. The terms tell clients to ask their Lockton representative for account-specific compensation. No public fee schedule, commission percentages or typical startup pricing appears on the reviewed pages. 13

RiskCube’s homepage and FAQ advertise no added broker fees, but its compensation disclosure allows agreed service fees and payment-processing charges. It also describes insurer or intermediary commissions and possible performance incentives. The scope of the fee-free claim needs written clarification for the requested services. 23,28,25
