Coverdash vs Lockton

How Coverdash’s online and embedded small-business brokerage differs from Lockton’s consultation-first technology and casualty practice.

Introduction

Coverdash describes itself as a brokerage for small businesses, startups and e-commerce, with direct and embedded distribution. Insurer markets still have to quote the actual risk. 8 1 Lockton describes independent brokerage for risk, benefits and retirement, including technology clients, through an inquiry rather than a public self-serve purchase flow. 28 39

A marketplace seller adding a software product, collecting certificates for vendor onboarding, and watching policy count because Coverdash discloses a nonrefundable technology access fee per policy is comparing online small-business brokerage with consultation-led program brokerage. A Lockton conversation is a different operating model, not a fee-free Coverdash. 5 40

Where Each Provider Shines

Where Coverdash Shines

  • Small businesses, startups and e-commerce sellers can compare quotes and buy coverage online or through a partner’s embedded insurance service. 4,8,2
  • One account provides access to applications, policies, billing requests, certificates and an account manager. 11,4

Where Lockton Shines

  • Lockton describes itself as a privately held independent broker for risk, employee benefits and retirement, not as the insurer on the policies it places. 28,40,47
  • US pages list brokerage for cyber and privacy, directors and officers, casualty (including general and product liability, auto, cargo, umbrella and workers’ compensation), property, fiduciary liability and employee benefits. 29,30,31,32,33,34,35,36,37

Key Differences Between Coverdash and Lockton

How You Request Coverage

Coverdash’s application collects business details for quoting; terms discuss broker designation and payment and binding qualifications that should be read together rather than assumed as instant bind. 10 2 Lockton’s U.S. contact form is a general inquiry; privacy materials mention soliciting a quote, not issuing a policy from the website. 39 42

Fees You Can See

Coverdash discloses a per-policy technology access fee. Lockton’s Terms of Business disclose commission, client-fee and contingent-compensation categories without a published per-policy technology fee. Compare cash outlay on the same lines: Coverdash’s fee is a disclosed extra; Lockton’s cost is premium plus whatever commission or fee that account uses. 5 40 Coverdash also documents automatic-renewal authorization with a consent threshold for premium change; Lockton describes renewal as part of servicing without that published threshold. 6

Certificates

Coverdash documents self-service and assisted certificates. 13 11 Lockton emphasizes a dedicated service team and does not describe a public certificate portal of the Coverdash type. Ask how certificates are issued if vendor onboarding is the bottleneck. 29

What to Confirm in Quotes

  • Policy count and Coverdash technology fees versus Lockton’s proposed commission or client fee. 5 40
  • Broker-of-record if you already use another producer, including Coverdash designation terms. 2
  • Which markets were actually approached, not panel marketing. 8 40
  • Renewal consent rules on Coverdash auto-renewal versus Lockton’s proposed service agreement. 6 40

Service Comparison

Coverdash vs Lockton: documented services and availability

CriteriaCoverdashLockton
Business role

Coverdash’s terms name Coverdash, Inc. and Coverdash Insurance Services, LLC; the LLC provides the insurance brokerage service. It arranges coverage with insurance companies and says it does not underwrite policies. 2

The reviewed corporate pages identify Coverdash, Inc. and Coverdash Insurance Services, LLC but do not establish their precise ownership relationship or a current controlling parent. 2,8

A partner can put Coverdash’s quote and policy-management experience inside its own website or software. Coverdash’s terms assign insurance solicitation and service to Coverdash rather than the host platform. 9,2

Lockton’s US site describes the firm as an independent insurance brokerage that arranges customized risk, employee benefits and retirement solutions. US Terms of Business treat Lockton Companies, LLC and affiliated Lockton companies as intermediaries that market, place and service insurance, not as the risk-bearing insurer on a placed policy. 28,40,47

Public US terms name Lockton Companies, LLC (and Series, subsidiaries and affiliates) as the brokerage group and Lockton, Inc. as the website operator. Certificates produced by Lockton also use the California DBA Lockton Insurance Brokers, LLC. Confirm the legal name on any broker-of-record or services agreement; these pages do not by themselves establish which entity would be appointed for a California company. 40,41,48

Lockton-produced certificates print California license number 0F15767 for Lockton Companies, LLC DBA Lockton Insurance Brokers, LLC. Current license status, classes and expiration remain independently unverified. Treat California producer authority as unresolved until a regulator record or the proposed engagement papers are checked. 48,49

Application process

Coverdash’s public application begins with an email-address field. Its FAQ says to have your business name, address, industry, annual revenue and employee count ready; it describes online quote comparison and purchasing, with same-day coverage for most policies. 10,4

The FAQ says payment follows choosing and binding a policy, but the terms allow collecting payment before binding and later insurer rejection or repricing. Confirm the effective date and binding confirmation before relying on coverage. 4,2

Using the brokerage service means appointing Coverdash as broker or agent of record and working exclusively with it for those services unless otherwise agreed. 2

Public US application starts as an inquiry: the US contact form (Ask an Expert) and industry pages invite buyers to connect with a team. The privacy notice refers to soliciting an insurance policy quote. The Cyber & Technology page publishes cyber@lockton.com. Reviewed pages do not describe a self-serve bind flow, published quote turnaround, or an unauthenticated online application that issues a policy without a Lockton representative. 39,28,42,30,41

Fees and compensation

Coverdash discloses a Technology Access Fee on each purchased policy, in addition to policy charges, and calls it fully earned and nonrefundable. The disclosure does not give its amount. 5

Coverdash may receive insurer or payment-servicer commissions, performance-related contingent or supplemental commissions, and negotiated client fees. It also discloses affinity-referral and administrative-service income. 5

Coverdash’s help center identifies Ascend as its payment and premium-finance partner. It explains that financing pays the annual premium upfront while the customer repays in installments. Confirm the current lender, interest and fees in the payment agreement. 12,6

US Terms of Business say Lockton may be paid insurer commissions (a percentage of premium), negotiated client fees in lieu of or in addition to commissions, additional compensation such as contingent or supplemental commissions, insurer service fees (including for some managing-general-agency or analytics work), compensation involving affiliate Lockton Re, LLC on reinsurance placements, and interest or premium-finance related income. Commissions are described as fully earned at inception unless law or insurer contracts say otherwise. The terms tell clients to ask their Lockton representative for account-specific compensation. No public fee schedule, commission percentages or typical startup pricing appears on the reviewed pages. 40

Servicing and renewals

The public sign-in page describes resuming applications, reviewing policies and billing requests, downloading certificates and contacting an account manager. Coverdash’s FAQ directs customers through their account to request coverage changes or cancellation. 11,4

Coverdash’s certificate guide describes self-service PDF certificates, selection of multiple policies and an e-commerce marketplace template. It says requests for agent assistance can take up to two business days. 13

For policies whose billing and premium payment it facilitates, Coverdash’s renewal authorization permits automatic renewal with a premium increase of up to 20% if no material coverage terms change. Larger increases or material changes require renewed consent. 6

The authorization permits necessary renewal paperwork, including a new premium-finance agreement. Customers can opt out or request cancellation through the dashboard, with processing time; the insurer still decides whether to renew. 6

Casualty pages say the same dedicated service team stays with the client through the process. Technology pages describe a round-the-clock service model. Terms of Business cover day-to-day servicing, risk control, insurance renewal services, policy administration and the use of intermediaries (including Lockton affiliates) in servicing and placement. Property pages say the team that meets the client also negotiates with markets rather than a remote broking center. A public client-portal feature list was not established beyond a Lockton Portal login link on the US site. 32,29,40,33,28

Claims assistance

Coverdash says customers can start a claim through their account or support team, which connects them with the insurer and guides the process. Its help article directs customers to Claims, then New Claim. 4,14

Lockton describes claims advocacy as a service, not as the insurer paying claims. Technology, D&O and fiduciary pages say a Professional & Executive Risk Claims team, including insurance and claims counsel, is integrated with the broking team and that claims advocacy is not treated as a profit center. Loss-prevention pages describe claims consulting: investigations, mapping facts to policies, preparing presentations, and discussions with insurer lawyers and loss adjusters. Workers’ compensation pages mention claims service advocates. Terms of Business include claims handling and claims processing among Lockton’s intermediary services and state Lockton is not responsible for an insurer’s solvency or willingness to pay. These descriptions do not establish claims outcomes or handling quality. 29,31,36,38,34,40
