Coalition vs Lockton

Compare Coalition’s technology policy and response services with Lockton’s contract review and claims advocacy.

Introduction

A technology company entering larger customer contracts may need someone to review insurance requirements and later explain a loss across several policies. Lockton’s technology practice markets contract review, international program design and claims advocacy. Coalition offers combined technology E&O and cyber through brokers, with incident support. These services can occupy different positions in the same buying process rather than competing for one identical job. 20 1 9

Key Differences Between Coalition and Lockton

Define the Advisor’s Assignment Separately from the Policy

Lockton’s direct technology materials emphasize cyber and D&O, while other practice pages list a broader range of placements. The reviewed public documentation does not establish a standalone Tech E&O offering from a direct product page. That is a documentation limit, not evidence that Lockton cannot place it. Ask the team explicitly to include technology professional liability in its assignment and identify the markets it would approach. Coalition’s Tech E&O route provides a more specific documented product inquiry, including review of services and contracts. 20 28 12

Incident Work and Claims Advocacy Address Different Needs

Coalition describes triage and recovery efforts through its claims experience. Lockton describes mapping losses to policies, preparing claim presentations and dealing with insurers and adjusters. A company could need both technical response and help presenting a disputed claim. Confirm the engagement and notification responsibilities; neither description proves that an insurer will accept the claim or that using a broker changes policy conditions. 9 29 31

An Advisor’s Engagement Does Not Bind the Insurance

Lockton says it is not obligated to use any particular insurer, is generally not authorized to bind insurers except in circumstances it says it will try to disclose, and does not guarantee placement on acceptable terms. Cyber pages refer to insurer partners without naming them. The workers’ compensation page claims access to more than 100 regional, global and program markets without listing those markets. Surplus-lines insurers may appear in a proposal when admitted markets cannot meet requested terms. Named issuing companies for a buyer’s policies were not disclosed on the reviewed pages. 31,21,25

Lockton’s terms also allow commissions, negotiated fees and other compensation, and describe commissions as generally earned at inception. Coalition discloses commissions and incentives for its producers. For a growing company considering an advisor change, request both the new service agreement and the economics of replacing or cancelling a placement. A broad service proposal should not be mistaken for evidence that coverage has started. 31 4

What to Confirm in Quotes

Ask who reviews customer contracts, who negotiates wording and who confirms binding in writing. Request an explicit Tech E&O placement scope, the proposed California producer and insurer, and the claims-advocacy work included in the fee or commission. For Coalition, confirm the incident contact and broker’s notification duties; for Lockton, specify responsibility when several policies or intermediaries are involved. The company-issued California license disclosure still needs independent checking. 13 9 31 39

Service Comparison

Coalition vs Lockton: documented services and availability

CriteriaCoalitionLockton
Business role

Coalition combines commercial insurance offerings with cyber risk-management services. In the United States, Coalition Insurance Solutions, Inc. (CIS) is the disclosed insurance producer and surplus lines broker; the issuing insurer is responsible for policy obligations. 2,7

Coalition lists CIS’s California producer and surplus lines license as 0L76155. This is a company disclosure; current license status has not been independently checked with the California regulator. 2

Coalition’s legal page identifies Coalition Incident Response, Inc., doing business as Coalition Security, or independent third parties as security-service providers. Coalition Security does not provide insurance. 2

Lockton’s US site describes the firm as an independent insurance brokerage that arranges customized risk, employee benefits and retirement solutions. US Terms of Business treat Lockton Companies, LLC and affiliated Lockton companies as intermediaries that market, place and service insurance, not as the risk-bearing insurer on a placed policy. 19,31,38

Public US terms name Lockton Companies, LLC (and Series, subsidiaries and affiliates) as the brokerage group and Lockton, Inc. as the website operator. Certificates produced by Lockton also use the California DBA Lockton Insurance Brokers, LLC. Confirm the legal name on any broker-of-record or services agreement; these pages do not by themselves establish which entity would be appointed for a California company. 31,32,39

Lockton-produced certificates print California license number 0F15767 for Lockton Companies, LLC DBA Lockton Insurance Brokers, LLC. Current license status, classes and expiration remain independently unverified. Treat California producer authority as unresolved until a regulator record or the proposed engagement papers are checked. 39,40

Application process

Coalition directs buyers to an appointed insurance broker and offers help finding access if their broker does not offer Coalition. It describes underwriting that considers industry, finances, operations and security posture. 13

Coalition’s broker instructions describe adding Tech E&O during the cyber quote process, supplying a product or service description and answering contract-related questions. Some quotes require review before a price is released. 12

Public US application starts as an inquiry: the US contact form (Ask an Expert) and industry pages invite buyers to connect with a team. The privacy notice refers to soliciting an insurance policy quote. The Cyber & Technology page publishes cyber@lockton.com. Reviewed pages do not describe a self-serve bind flow, published quote turnaround, or an unauthenticated online application that issues a policy without a Lockton representative. 30,19,33,21,32

Access to insurers

Coalition identifies Coalition Insurance Company (NAIC 29530) for admitted cyber and describes CIS as acting for unaffiliated insurers on non-admitted placements. The reviewed sources do not assign a single insurer to every California Tech E&O quote; confirm the named carrier on the quote and policy. 3,2

Fees and compensation

Coalition says independent producers typically receive commissions based on premium for new and renewed policies. Contingent commissions, placement incentives and compensation for certain cybersecurity sales may also apply. 4

Coalition says it retains part of earned premiums to fund operations and broker commissions and receives additional carrier payments based on the portfolio’s annual loss ratio. 16

The reviewed compensation disclosures do not state the commission percentage, broker fee or total premium for a particular startup quote. Obtain an itemized cost and compensation explanation from the placing broker. 4,16

US Terms of Business say Lockton may be paid insurer commissions (a percentage of premium), negotiated client fees in lieu of or in addition to commissions, additional compensation such as contingent or supplemental commissions, insurer service fees (including for some managing-general-agency or analytics work), compensation involving affiliate Lockton Re, LLC on reinsurance placements, and interest or premium-finance related income. Commissions are described as fully earned at inception unless law or insurer contracts say otherwise. The terms tell clients to ask their Lockton representative for account-specific compensation. No public fee schedule, commission percentages or typical startup pricing appears on the reviewed pages. 31

Claims assistance

Coalition describes in-house cyber claims triage and assistance attempting to recover stolen funds. Its Tech E&O page says the same claims team manages cyber and Tech E&O claims. These service descriptions do not establish response quality or payment of a particular loss. 9,1

Lockton describes claims advocacy as a service, not as the insurer paying claims. Technology, D&O and fiduciary pages say a Professional & Executive Risk Claims team, including insurance and claims counsel, is integrated with the broking team and that claims advocacy is not treated as a profit center. Loss-prevention pages describe claims consulting: investigations, mapping facts to policies, preparing presentations, and discussions with insurer lawyers and loss adjusters. Workers’ compensation pages mention claims service advocates. Terms of Business include claims handling and claims processing among Lockton’s intermediary services and state Lockton is not responsible for an insurer’s solvency or willingness to pay. These descriptions do not establish claims outcomes or handling quality. 20,22,27,29,25,31
