Moving from Marsh

Marsh is a global broker with a technology practice, cyber specialists and, in the US and Canada, a middle-market route through Marsh McLennan Agency. Its compensation guide describes its role as facilitating placement of coverage on behalf of clients. Marsh isn’t identified as the insurer that issues or pays the policy.

Why businesses consider switching

  • 01

    You’ve moved between size tiers

A business can outgrow the service of a middle-market team, or find a global program more than it needs after it simplifies.

  • 02

You want a specialist in your sector

Technology, life sciences and infrastructure each have their own markets, and some buyers want a broker who spends its days in one.

  • 03

You want your program in one place

Policies spread across entities and inboxes are hard to manage. Buyers sometimes move to simplify who services what.

  • 04

    You’re comparing compensation models

Brokers disclose fees and commissions in different ways. Buyers often want to see more than one before deciding.

How to switch without a gap

  • 01

Reconcile the names on your paperwork

Marsh materials use more than one legal name. Check which entity signed your agreement, the term, and how much notice it needs.

  • 02

Choose the new broker with Spot

Ask each candidate to name the insurers it would approach for every line, and to explain its compensation in writing.

  • 03

Pick a letter or a renewal handover

Sending a letter shifts servicing right away; a renewal handover shifts it when the new policy starts. Your Spot team checks each against the insurer.

  • 04

Confirm in writing before anything ends

Keep every policy active until the new broker confirms. Then reissue certificates and update contacts on your contracts. Employee benefits are a separate decision.

Common questions

Is Marsh my insurer?

No. Marsh is a broker; the insurer named on each policy issues and pays it. Moving brokers doesn’t change the insurer unless you also choose a different policy.

Does Spot help with large programs?

Yes. Spot works alongside brokers at any size. Your Spot team assembles your policies, contract requirements and renewal dates so that brokers you consider can compare like with like.

Is Spot affiliated with Marsh?

No. Spot isn’t affiliated with Marsh or Marsh McLennan Agency, and doesn’t act for either. Their names appear only to say which broker you’re moving from.

Do I need to wait for a renewal to leave Marsh?

Not always. A broker of record letter can change servicing mid-term, though insurers set their own timing. Your Spot team checks how it applies to each of your policies.

Does Spot earn money when I move brokers?

No. Spot takes no commissions on premiums and sits beside your broker, not in place of it. Your new broker gets paid under its own arrangement with you and the insurer.
