Lockton vs Mylo

How Lockton’s privately held technology brokerage differs from Mylo’s small-business digital shop, including that Mylo is not currently a Lockton company.

Introduction

Lockton’s current U.S. site presents an independent brokerage and a technology practice; it does not market Mylo as a Lockton product. 1 2 Mylo describes itself as an independent broker for small and growing businesses and documents a digital or advisor-assisted shop. 23 24

A Bay Area founder who remembers Mylo as “the Lockton startup brand” should treat that as history. A 23 May 2023 Kansas City Business Journal report and Group 1001’s 26 September 2023 announcement support Group 1001 as Mylo’s later backer and that Mylo was no longer part of Lockton. Buying through Mylo’s website is not hiring Lockton. 39 38

Where Each Provider Shines

Where Lockton Shines

  • Lockton describes itself as a privately held independent broker for risk, employee benefits and retirement, not as the insurer on the policies it places. 1,13,20
  • US pages list brokerage for cyber and privacy, directors and officers, casualty (including general and product liability, auto, cargo, umbrella and workers’ compensation), property, fiduciary liability and employee benefits. 2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10

Where Mylo Shines

  • Buyers can shop online or with a licensed advisor; Mylo says it compares available quotes, with an agent finalizing most policies. 23,25
  • Employers with 2–99 employees can explore group benefits with a licensed advisor and a year-round HR portal. 36

Key Differences Between Lockton and Mylo

Corporate Relationship

A March 2020 Lockton article that listed a Mylo COO among Lockton leaders is dated well before the 2023 ownership reports. Do not use it as evidence of current control. Group 1001 backing also does not mean a Group 1001 insurer issues a Mylo policy. 20 38

How a Small Business Buys

Mylo lets you start online or with an advisor; it says an agent finalizes most policies. Lockton’s published U.S. contact is an inquiry, without a self-serve bind. 24 12

Catalogue and Pay

Mylo’s catalogue is small-business commercial lines plus small-group benefits. 36 Lockton’s technology practice and People Solutions are aimed at customized risk and benefits programs. Overlap on cyber or workers’ compensation labels does not make the underwriting the same. 8 Mylo says guided shopping is generally free to the customer, with carrier commission. Lockton may charge client fees and may receive contingent compensation. 13

What to Confirm in Quotes

  • Producer legal name: Mylo, LLC versus the Lockton company on the agreement. 24 13
  • That you are not assuming shared systems because of the former Lockton relationship. 39
  • Issuing carriers Mylo names as examples versus Lockton’s unnamed markets. 13
  • Whether directors and officers liability and international programs Lockton markets appear in Mylo’s actual quote. 4

Service Comparison

Lockton vs Mylo: documented services and availability

CriteriaLocktonMylo
Business role

Lockton’s US site describes the firm as an independent insurance brokerage that arranges customized risk, employee benefits and retirement solutions. US Terms of Business treat Lockton Companies, LLC and affiliated Lockton companies as intermediaries that market, place and service insurance, not as the risk-bearing insurer on a placed policy. 1,13,20

Public US terms name Lockton Companies, LLC (and Series, subsidiaries and affiliates) as the brokerage group and Lockton, Inc. as the website operator. Certificates produced by Lockton also use the California DBA Lockton Insurance Brokers, LLC. Confirm the legal name on any broker-of-record or services agreement; these pages do not by themselves establish which entity would be appointed for a California company. 13,14,21

Lockton-produced certificates print California license number 0F15767 for Lockton Companies, LLC DBA Lockton Insurance Brokers, LLC. Current license status, classes and expiration remain independently unverified. Treat California producer authority as unresolved until a regulator record or the proposed engagement papers are checked. 21,22

Mylo describes itself as an independent insurance broker for small and growing businesses. It recommends coverage and compares available quotes from multiple insurers rather than issuing its own policies. 23,24

Mylo says it launched within Lockton Companies in 2015 and now has Group 1001 as its backer. A May 2023 Kansas City Business Journal report said Group 1001 became the majority investor and Mylo was no longer part of Lockton; the reviewed sources did not provide a newer ownership percentage. 24,38,39

Mylo, LLC operates the website and is the named insurance agency. Its footer identifies Mylo Insurance Solutions, LLC as a trade name in California, Illinois, Michigan and North Dakota, and Mylo Solutions, LLC as a trade name in New York. 23,25,40,41

Mylo also supplies an embedded insurance-shopping service to other companies and insurance agencies. A buyer entering through a partner should identify whether Mylo, the partner or another licensed entity is the producer for the transaction. 37,38

Application process

Public US application starts as an inquiry: the US contact form (Ask an Expert) and industry pages invite buyers to connect with a team. The privacy notice refers to soliciting an insurance policy quote. The Cyber & Technology page publishes cyber@lockton.com. Reviewed pages do not describe a self-serve bind flow, published quote turnaround, or an unauthenticated online application that issues a policy without a Lockton representative. 12,1,15,3,14

A business buyer can answer questions about the company and industry online or work by phone with a licensed advisor. Mylo says its system recommends coverage and compares available quotes; some carrier and coverage combinations can be purchased online, but an agent finalizes the policy in most cases. 23,25

Mylo’s Terms of Use say a purchase may carry additional transaction terms, require accurate and complete application answers and is not guaranteed to result in an issued policy. The posted site terms were last updated in November 2018, so buyers should review the current terms presented with a quote. 25

Access to insurers

Lockton says it is not obligated to use any particular insurer, is generally not authorized to bind insurers except in circumstances it says it will try to disclose, and does not guarantee placement on acceptable terms. Cyber pages refer to insurer partners without naming them. The workers’ compensation page claims access to more than 100 regional, global and program markets without listing those markets. Surplus-lines insurers may appear in a proposal when admitted markets cannot meet requested terms. Named issuing companies for a buyer’s policies were not disclosed on the reviewed pages. 13,3,7

Mylo says its commercial brokerage works with more than 40 carrier partners and names Travelers, Liberty Mutual, The Hartford and Hiscox as examples. That panel does not establish which insurers will consider or quote a particular business. 23,26

Mylo’s public pages do not provide a complete product-and-state schedule of issuing insurers. The carrier contact directory names companies used for some customers, but the legal insurer for each proposed policy must be confirmed in the quote and policy documents. 23,26,25

Fees and compensation

US Terms of Business say Lockton may be paid insurer commissions (a percentage of premium), negotiated client fees in lieu of or in addition to commissions, additional compensation such as contingent or supplemental commissions, insurer service fees (including for some managing-general-agency or analytics work), compensation involving affiliate Lockton Re, LLC on reinsurance placements, and interest or premium-finance related income. Commissions are described as fully earned at inception unless law or insurer contracts say otherwise. The terms tell clients to ask their Lockton representative for account-specific compensation. No public fee schedule, commission percentages or typical startup pricing appears on the reviewed pages. 13

Mylo says its guided shopping service is free and that 95% of customers do not pay Mylo a fee when purchasing. It generally earns a carrier commission; in fewer than 5% of transactions, it says it charges a fee when it handles billing and incurs higher administrative costs. The reviewed disclosure does not give the fee amount. 24

Claims assistance

Lockton describes claims advocacy as a service, not as the insurer paying claims. Technology, D&O and fiduciary pages say a Professional & Executive Risk Claims team, including insurance and claims counsel, is integrated with the broking team and that claims advocacy is not treated as a profit center. Loss-prevention pages describe claims consulting: investigations, mapping facts to policies, preparing presentations, and discussions with insurer lawyers and loss adjusters. Workers’ compensation pages mention claims service advocates. Terms of Business include claims handling and claims processing among Lockton’s intermediary services and state Lockton is not responsible for an insurer’s solvency or willingness to pay. These descriptions do not establish claims outcomes or handling quality. 2,4,9,11,7,13

Mylo publishes carrier-specific support and claims contacts and directs customers to the insurer for many service needs. If a carrier is not listed, the page gives a Mylo Service Professional number; it does not promise that Mylo decides or pays claims. 26
