Founder Shield vs
TechInsurance
How high-growth brokerage and small-business technology shopping differ when a startup both uses and sells AI.
Introduction
A startup that uses AI internally and sells AI-enabled software needs to describe both activities accurately. Founder Shield markets a standalone generative-AI liability product alongside high-growth brokerage services; TechInsurance markets technology E&O/cyber within its small-business offering. The important distinction is the activity each proposed policy accepts, not whether its marketing mentions technology. 14 1 35

Key Differences Between Founder Shield and TechInsurance
An AI User Product Is Not Automatically an AI Vendor Policy
Founder Shield markets a standalone generative-AI liability product for US businesses using AI in their operations, with revenue up to $10 billion. Its page excludes companies selling AI products, standard cyberattacks and intentional misuse. 14
That restriction is decisive for a mixed business: ask whether internal AI use can be addressed separately from selling the product. Founder Shield’s broad technology practice should not be read as overriding this particular product’s exclusions. TechInsurance’s technology E&O/cyber description supplies a different starting point, but does not itself establish coverage for AI outputs, intellectual property or regulatory investigations. 6 14 35
Founder Shield identifies Testudo in the AI placement chain, and the shared research preserves differences between their coverage summaries. Request the proposed form rather than combining the most favorable statements from the two sites. This specialty offering also does not replace the rest of a startup’s employee, property or board insurance. 17 15 14
Growth Support and the Contracting Entity
Founder Shield describes service for venture-backed businesses through later growth stages and asks clients to report new products, business models and territories. TechInsurance’s customer focus includes startups and freelancers, but its reviewed pages do not define complex-program service commitments. A finance team planning expansion should specify the review work and responsible people it expects from either broker. 6 19 36 31
Corporate affiliation does not remove entity checks. Founder Shield belongs to Baldwin, while its terms use different contracting and producer names that need resolution for a new engagement. TechInsurance identifies its SPG division and Insureon/HUB relationship. Ask for the actual producer on the California proposal, not just the parent brand. 3 2 37 40
Contract Requests and Claim Disputes
Founder Shield’s certificate process asks for contract wording so the team can assess endorsement needs; its claims service describes advocacy and dispute help. TechInsurance documents certificate requests and help locating insurer claim contacts. These public descriptions differ in scope but do not measure either team’s performance. Ask who reviews a demanding customer clause and who assists if the insurer disputes reimbursement. 18 21 31 39
What to Confirm in Quotes
- Separate AI use from AI sales in the submission and obtain written eligibility and exclusions for both activities. 14 35
- Reconcile the AI coverage summaries against the offered form, issuing insurer and California route. 15 16 33
- Name the legal producer, contract-review responsibilities, claims-advocacy scope and all applicable compensation in the engagement. 2 21 38
Service Comparison
Founder Shield vs TechInsurance: documented services and availability
| Criteria | Founder Shield | TechInsurance |
|---|---|---|
| Business role | Founder Shield is a commercial insurance broker: it helps businesses choose coverage and arrange policies with insurers. Its terms say it does not insure the risk or decide whether a claim is covered. 1,2 Founder Shield operates within The Baldwin Group, which lists it among its acquired firms. Founder Shield describes itself as the group’s innovation arm. 3,4 The terms name The Baldwin Group Specialty Solutions, LLC as the contracting company, but the License Status section identifies Foundershield LLC as the producer. The reviewed records do not resolve which entity would appear on a new engagement; ask for its legal name and applicable license. 2,5,24 New York’s Department of Financial Services reported a $36,600 fine against Foundershield LLC for late filing of excess-line documents for recording and stamping during January 2019–March 2023. The consent order was approved on June 26, 2025. The notice concerns filing compliance, not a finding about claims payments. 24 | TechInsurance is a small-business insurance agency and brokerage. Its legal disclosure identifies the business as a division of Specialty Program Group LLC, doing business in California as SPG Insurance Solutions. 31,37,38 TechInsurance describes itself as part of Insureon and HUB International. Its history says HUB acquired Insureon’s digital agency in 2022 while Bold Penguin acquired the technology platform; HUB’s acquisition announcement placed the agency operations within Specialty Program Group. 30,31,40 |
| Customer focus | Founder Shield focuses on venture-backed and high-growth businesses, from early funding rounds through an initial public offering. Its practices include technology, life sciences, financial services, retail and transportation. 1,6 | TechInsurance markets to small businesses, including startups and freelancers, with a technology focus spanning software developers, SaaS companies, IT consultants and managed service providers. Its catalogue also serves traditional industries. 36,35 |
| Availability | Founder Shield’s terms limit services to permitted US jurisdictions and say some offerings are available in only some states. Testudo describes its AI product as excess-and-surplus-lines coverage that is not available in every state. No complete product-by-state availability schedule was established. 2,16 The reviewed sources did not establish a current state-by-state license list for the producer. Confirm the named entity’s license for your placement with the state regulator; the 2025 disciplinary record does not establish current status. 25,24,26 | TechInsurance’s California sales page offers an application and quote-comparison route for general liability, professional E&O, business owner’s policies, workers’ compensation, cyber, commercial auto, fidelity bonds and umbrella coverage. This establishes a marketed California route, not acceptance of a particular startup or availability of every listed product. 33 TechInsurance reports licensing in all 50 states and Washington, D.C., and lists California license 0L09546. Current regulator status, authority and appointments were not independently verified for this profile. 32 |
| Servicing and renewals | Founder Shield’s certificate FAQ directs customers to email the team. For a request tied to a contract, it asks for the other party’s legal name and address, required wording, and the insurance requirements from the contract so the team can assess endorsement needs. 18 Founder Shield asks clients to report changes such as a new product, a different business model, a new office or entry into another territory. Its team says it will evaluate those changes and adjust coverage. 19 Founder Shield describes a platform for applications and renewals, with ongoing advisor support. Its renewal guide suggests starting 60–90 days before expiration and preparing updated business information and claims history. That is planning guidance, not a promised renewal-service deadline. 1,20 Founder Shield’s terms direct cancellation requests to client support and warn that some insurers retain a minimum earned premium—a portion you cannot recover by cancelling early. Check the proposal’s cancellation terms. 2 | TechInsurance says it provides a dedicated account manager and online certificate access. Its instructions require an active policy for a certificate request and direct urgent requests to the account manager. 29,31 The reviewed About and Contact pages do not establish a renewal remarketing schedule, a contractual response-time commitment, or the scope of dedicated support for a complex growth-stage insurance program. 30,31 |
| Claims assistance | Founder Shield describes claims advocacy that includes reporting guidance, help with disputes and policy review when defense counsel is needed. Its claims page says you can report through the portal at any time or directly to the insurer using the notice details in the policy. 21 Founder Shield says its app offers claim updates, progress tracking and requests for information from the insurer. The insurer’s coverage decision remains separate from the broker’s assistance. 21,2 | TechInsurance’s claims guidance generally directs customers to the insurance carrier. It says its agents can help locate policy information or the insurer’s contact details; it does not establish that TechInsurance adjusts claims or guarantees an outcome. 39 |
