How it works

Gather your liability policies

Send the policies that would sit underneath, such as general liability, auto and employer’s liability. Your Spot team reads their limits and named insureds.

What you’ll need

  • 01

    Current liability policies and limits

Every policy that would sit beneath the extra layer, with its limits. This becomes the underlying schedule.

  • 02

    Named insureds on each policy

So the extra layer names the same parties as the policies beneath it.

  • 03

    Auto or trucking liability terms

Whether your commercial auto or trucking policy is listed as underlying, if you need auto claims covered.

  • 04

    Contracts that require higher limits

Customer, lease or vendor clauses that set a liability limit above what your primary policies provide.

  • 05

    Operations and exposures

What the business does and where, which underwriters review alongside the underlying policies.

  • 06

    Specialty exposures

Employment practices, professional liability, recall and similar risks, to see whether they are included or excluded.

  • 07

    Loss history

Claims on the underlying policies, which show how often liability limits are tested.

What affects your price

  • 01

    The limit you add

More additional limit generally costs more.

  • 02

    Strength of the underlying policies

What sits underneath, and its limits, shapes how likely the extra layer is to pay.

  • 03

    Operations and exposures

Work with higher injury or damage potential, including driving, raises the price.

  • 04

    Auto exposure

If your vehicles are scheduled underneath, their use and driver records affect the premium.

  • 05

    Claims history

Past liability claims can raise the price or narrow who will quote.

Common questions

What’s the difference between umbrella and excess?

Both add liability limits above selected policies once their limits are used up. Proposals name them differently, so we compare the underlying schedule and attachment terms rather than the label.

Will the umbrella cover my commercial auto?

Only if the auto policy is listed as underlying insurance. We ask that of every proposal.

Does a large limit cover everything?

No. Specialty claims, such as employment practices or professional liability allegations, can be excluded by name, so we read the exclusions.

Can the broker on my primary policies place the umbrella?

Yes. Spot works with them on the underlying schedule and takes no commissions on premiums. You can also use a different broker for the extra layer.
