What your certificate needs to show

  • 01

    Auto liability

Liability for injury or damage your truck causes, at the limit the broker or shipper sets.

  • 02

    Motor truck cargo

Cover for the load itself, with a limit that fits the freight and any exclusions the shipper cares about.

  • 03

    Your carrier details

Your legal name, MC and USDOT numbers matching your authority, and sometimes the units on the policy.

  • 04

    General liability and workers’ comp

Some shippers ask for these too, especially when your drivers load or unload at their docks.

  • 05

The broker or shipper as certificate holder

Their legal name and address, and sometimes their status on your policy, as their packet describes.

Endorsements to check

  • 01

    MCS-90

An endorsement some operations need on the liability policy as proof of financial responsibility. It isn’t created by a certificate, and the federal filing is a separate step.

  • 02

    Additional insured

Some shippers ask to be added to your auto or general liability policy. That needs an endorsement, which your Spot team requests through your broker and insurer.

Generate your certificate in Spot

  • 01

    Pick your trucking policies

Choose auto liability, cargo and anything else the packet lists.

  • 02

    Enter the broker or shipper

Add their legal name and address as certificate holder.

  • 03

    Upload the setup packet

Attach the packet’s insurance page or list its requirements, including any units or commodities to show.

  • 04

    Check it, then send

Confirm your MC number, limits and policy dates, then download the certificate or send it to their carrier setup team.

Mistakes to avoid

  • 01

Cargo exclusions that don’t fit the freight

Shippers read cargo terms for how the policy treats their goods, refrigeration and unattended trucks. Describe your freight when the policy is quoted, not after a shipper asks.

  • 02

A name that doesn’t match your authority

The insured name on the certificate should match the name on your operating authority.

  • 03

Treating the certificate as the filing

Brokers can check your federal insurance filing separately. A certificate doesn’t replace it.

Common questions

How do I send a certificate to a new freight broker?

Generate it in the Spot app from your trucking policies, with the broker as certificate holder, and send it with your setup packet.

The shipper wants a higher cargo limit. Can the certificate show it?

Only if your policy has it. Ask your Spot team, and we’ll get the cost of raising the limit from your broker before you agree to the load.

Does my certificate prove my federal filing?

No. The filing is made by your insurer and checked separately. Spot follows up with your broker until it’s in place.

Does my trucking agent still place the policies?

Yes. Spot works with your agent or broker and takes no commissions on premiums. Their policies sit in your Spot workspace, ready for certificates.
