What you’ll need

  • 01

    Goods and values

What you ship and what a typical load is worth.

  • 02

    Your interest in the goods

Whether you own them or are responsible for another party’s cargo.

  • 03

    Routes and transport stages

Road, air and water legs, with origins and destinations.

  • 04

    Storage stops

Warehouses and holding points along the journey, and for how long.

  • 05

    Shipping contracts

Your transport contract and, for international sales, the shipping terms that say who arranges cargo insurance.

  • 06

    Loading and security practices

How you load and unload, secure unattended vehicles and handle refrigeration if needed.

  • 07

    Loss history

Past cargo losses and your current coverage.

What affects your price

  • 01

    Value and type of goods

Fragile, perishable or high-value goods cost more to insure.

  • 02

    Routes and modes

Longer journeys and more transport legs add exposure.

  • 03

    Storage during transit

Stops in warehouses add risk that the quote has to include.

  • 04

    Handling and security

Loading practices, security for unattended vehicles and refrigeration controls are part of how insurers judge a shipment.

  • 05

    Limits and valuation

Higher limits cost more, and the valuation basis changes what a claim would pay.

Common questions

Does cargo insurance cover a late delivery?

Not necessarily. Delay and loss of market can be excluded even when the shipment is insured, so we check each quote.

Who has to arrange cargo insurance on an international sale?

It depends on your agreed shipping terms. Bring the agreement and we help you check who must arrange it.

Is cargo covered under my trucking policy?

Not by liability alone. Cargo protection is a separate part of a trucking program. Spot has a separate page for trucking quotes.

Does Spot replace my freight or cargo broker?

No. Spot works alongside brokers and takes no commissions on premiums. Keep yours, or switch to a broker that suits your shipping better.
