Telehealth Insurance in Indiana

Indiana’s licensing agency lists a broad set of practitioner classes under the telehealth statute, but only certain classes are prescribers; practitioners still must hold the applicable Indiana license. Since July 1, 2024, the old practitioner and facility telehealth certificates are no longer required, while out-of-state practitioners, employers, and contractors remain subject to Indiana courts and law for covered Indiana-patient claims. This does not establish what a liability policy covers. 1,2

What Is Virtual Care And Telehealth?

Telehealth liability can cover claims arising from remote health care, such as a video visit or remote monitoring. If you provide care online, match the quote to your clinicians, services and patient locations; cyber and in-person risks need separate review. Read the national Virtual care and telehealth guide.

What to Watch for in Indiana

  • Practitioner And Prescriber Classes Differ

Indiana’s telehealth statute lists professions including nurses, counselors, dentists, therapists, psychologists, veterinarians, and others as practitioners, while the separate prescriber definition is narrower. Ask the broker to list the actual licensed professionals, prescribers, and entity activities in your practice instead of assuming one classification covers every role. 1

  • Old Telehealth Certificates Ended

Indiana terminated telehealth and facility certificates effective July 1, 2024. The licensing agency says practitioners still need the appropriate Indiana professional license, so ask your broker to review the current license and insured-entity structure rather than relying on the retired certificate. 2

  • Indiana Claims Reach Employer And Contractor

A practitioner physically outside Indiana who establishes a provider-patient relationship or decides whether to prescribe for a person located in Indiana agrees to Indiana jurisdiction and law for claims arising from those services; the agency explains this extends to the practitioner’s employer or contractor. Ask whether your policy names the organization and relevant contracting entity. 2

Who Regulates Insurance in Indiana

Indiana Department of Insurance

The Indiana Department of Insurance licenses and regulates insurance companies and producers, reviews rates and policies, and investigates consumer complaints. Its Consumer Services Division accepts complaints and the Department provides company and license searches. 3,4,5

Surplus-lines tax and stamping office

Reported tax rate: 2.5% of gross premium when Indiana is the home state Indiana’s surplus-lines premium tax is 2.5% when Indiana is the insured’s home state. Surplus-lines policies are outside Indiana guaranty-fund protection; before you buy, confirm the insurer’s identity and financial strength with your broker. 6,7,8,9

Providers With Documented State Licenses

No provider in Spot’s research documents both a state license record and this coverage line. This does not establish that providers are unlicensed. Check the regulator’s license lookup and confirm availability with a provider when requesting a quote.
