Pie Insurance vs Vouch

Pie Insurance and Vouch address different parts of a growing hardware company’s workers’ compensation, product and management insurance needs.

Introduction

Pie Insurance sells and administers small-business workers’ compensation backed by affiliated carriers, alongside selected other policies from outside insurers. Vouch is a broker whose technology practice includes workers’ compensation, product liability, cyber and directors and officers insurance. For a hardware business hiring assembly staff while developing its product, the question is how to connect the employee-injury policy with a wider business insurance program. 5 3 32

Key Differences Between Pie Insurance and Vouch

Hiring Coverage and Product-Launch Coverage

A hardware team moving from design work to a small assembly operation needs to describe the new duties for workers’ compensation. Pie’s workers’ compensation application asks about payroll and class codes, the classifications used to describe work for insurance. That gives the employer a direct reason to explain the new assembly duties rather than reusing a purely office-based description. Vouch also markets workers’ compensation within its technology offering; ask its broker how it will present the same change to proposed insurers. 3 32

A product reaching customers creates a separate coverage question. Vouch’s technology list includes product liability, cyber, technology E&O and management lines. Pie’s outside-carrier general-liability page discusses products liability, and its partner offerings include cyber and professional liability. There is overlap, but neither a workers’ compensation quote nor an industry catalogue establishes the complete protection for a connected device, its software or the people running the business. 32 10 8 9

Ask each representative to separate employee injuries, product allegations, software-service failures and management requirements in the proposal. Identify the insured activities and exclusions for each offered policy. A wider Vouch catalogue provides more explicit categories to investigate, but does not mean every line is included or that Pie’s partner insurer offers identical wording under a familiar name. 32 33 4

Broker Relationships and Product Roles

Pie supports direct applicants and appointed insurance agencies. Vouch describes comparing insurer options and coordinating several carriers through one advisory relationship. The business can therefore ask about a Pie workers’ compensation proposal and a wider brokerage assignment as different decisions. No reviewed source establishes that Vouch is appointed with Pie, so actual access must be confirmed before planning around that combination. 2 33

The legal roles remain separate even if one website organizes the purchase. Pie Insurance Services is the producer; affiliated companies underwrite its workers’ compensation program. Vouch Specialty is the current broker, and its connection with Corix does not identify the insurer on every placement. Request the actual issuer and service contact for each policy rather than treating either brand as one company doing everything. 5 27 33

Payroll Billing and Premium Financing

Pie’s pay-as-you-go option calculates monthly workers’ compensation payments using reported payroll and advertises no initial deposit. For the assembly team, that can be evaluated against changing payroll and the available reporting connection. Pie still requires an annual audit, including actual job-duty and subcontractor information where applicable. Its billing feature is not a substitute for maintaining those records. 18 19

Vouch discloses possible premium financing through a separate provider and possible payment transaction fees. Financing divides or funds payment for an insurance purchase; it does not establish that the underlying workers’ compensation premium adjusts with payroll in the same way. Ask Vouch for the proposed carrier’s billing and audit arrangements, then compare the full financing cost with the applicable Pie payment schedule. 27 17

Pie also discloses commissions to partner agents, while Vouch discloses commissions and possible performance-based compensation. Itemize those arrangements alongside customer-paid charges and the cost of any policies purchased elsewhere. A workers’ compensation-only premium and the price of a multi-policy advisory program are not comparable totals. 21 27

Renewal and Incident Procedures

Pie’s account tools provide workers’ compensation documents, state materials and certificates. Vouch describes coordination of documents and renewal cycles across carriers and offers contract-requirement review. If a distributor asks for a product-liability certificate and the premises owner requests workers’ compensation proof, identify who supplies each and who arranges any underlying amendment. A single point of contact can organize the work but does not change the policy terms. 15 33 44 46

Renewal needs more than updated payroll. Vouch’s guide asks for business changes and attention to prior-acts dates; Pie’s process asks for actual payroll and duties. A hardware company should present changes in production, software and sales alongside hiring, and ask which insurers need to approve them. Neither renewal guidance nor the existence of a digital account guarantees continued eligibility. 47 19 4

Claims procedures should be separate for a workplace injury and a product or cyber allegation. Pie publishes injury-reporting instructions and state-dependent handlers. Vouch offers advocacy with insurers and distinguishes that role from the insurer’s coverage decision. Establish the notice route for each policy before launch; neither service description establishes that one incident is insured under multiple lines. 20 21 48 49

What to Confirm in Quotes

  • Updated activities and payroll: describe assembly, design and subcontracted work, with accepted classifications and audit records. 3 19 32
  • A complete product-and-company program: identify product, software, cyber and management terms separately from workers’ compensation. 10 8 32
  • An access and service map: confirm whether the intended agent can place the selected policy, then name responsibility for certificates, renewals and amendments. 2 33
  • A payment and incident plan: distinguish payroll billing from financed premium, list applicable charges, and assign injury and product/cyber notices to the correct recipients. 17 20 27 49

Service Comparison

Pie Insurance vs Vouch: documented services and availability

CriteriaPie InsuranceVouch
Customer focus

Pie markets its workers’ compensation program to small businesses, both directly and through local, regional and national insurance agencies. 2,3

Vouch is a business insurance broker and risk advisor for growing companies. Its customers include startups and established businesses in technology, healthcare and life sciences, professional services, and financial services. Buyers can start an application online and work with advisors to arrange coverage. 26,31,32

Application process

A small business can start a workers’ compensation quote on Pie’s website or work through an insurance agent; appointed agencies use a separate partner portal. 2,1,3

The live direct quote starts with the business ZIP code. Pie’s workers’ compensation page says applicants also need their name, business name, annual payroll and class-code information. 6,3

Pie advertises an online workers’ compensation quote in about three minutes, while expressly stating that individual quote times vary. This is a company claim and does not establish how long underwriting or binding will take for a particular risk. 3,1

Vouch’s public application starts with your legal business name, website, business address and location type, followed by your role and contact details. There is a separate sign-in path for an existing application or policy. 31

Vouch says its platform presents carrier options together, with differences in coverage, exclusions, endorsements and pricing explained by advisors. The reviewed pages do not promise a fixed number of quotes or a search of every insurer. 33

Vouch says many technology companies can arrange coverage within days, with smaller programs sometimes completed in minutes. Those are company timing claims. Its buying guide says coverage requires binding confirmation and the effective date, with underwriting and payment conditions satisfied. 32,34

Access to insurers

Pie says workers’ compensation is underwritten by The Pie Insurance Company (NAIC 21857) and affiliates. AM Best says Pie began writing all of that business through The Pie Insurance Company and Pie Casualty Insurance Company (NAIC 10997) on January 1, 2024. 5,22,23,24

AM Best affirmed Pie Casualty Insurance Company’s pooled A- (Excellent) financial strength rating with a Stable outlook, effective April 24, 2026. A rating is an opinion of insurer financial strength, not a guarantee that a claim is covered or paid. 22

Pie says business owner’s, general liability and professional liability policies are underwritten by unaffiliated third-party insurers, and its cyber page refers to carrier partners. The reviewed public pages do not name the currently participating insurers for these products. 5,7,8,9,10

Corix’s disclosures name State National Insurance Company, Inc. for its admitted offerings and United Specialty Insurance Company for certain surplus-lines offerings. These are Corix program disclosures; they do not identify the insurer on every policy placed by Vouch. 38

Corix’s public management liability application names United Specialty Insurance Company. It offers directors and officers, employment practices and fiduciary liability selections, with a warning about claims-made liability and defense costs reducing the limit unless endorsed otherwise. 52

Servicing and renewals

Pie’s policyholder account tutorial describes payment-method updates, instant or custom workers’ compensation certificates, policy details and downloads for policies, state posters, certificates and endorsements. Agent-served customers may need their agent for a custom certificate. 15,16

Pie requires an annual workers’ compensation premium audit that replaces estimated payroll with actual payroll information. Its audit partner may request payroll and employee records, cash-expense details and subcontractor certificates, so the final premium can differ from the initial estimate. 19

Pie says it sends a workers’ compensation renewal quote about 30 days before the current term ends for the policyholder’s review and acceptance. 16

Vouch offers a complimentary coverage review that it describes as identifying gaps and comparing a program with industry peers. It also offers reviews of insurance requirements in leases, customer agreements and funding arrangements. 43,44

Vouch says customers can request certificates of insurance through their account and include a third party in the request. A certificate summarizes insurance; the policy and any required endorsements determine that third party’s actual coverage. 45,46

Vouch says it coordinates documentation, communication and renewal cycles across carriers. Its renewal guide asks buyers to prepare updated financials, claims history and business changes, starting 30–60 days before renewal. That is preparation guidance, not a guaranteed service timetable or automatic renewal commitment. 33,47

Fees and compensation

Published workers’ compensation options include annual, semi-annual, quarterly and monthly schedules, plus pay-as-you-go. The monthly schedule requires 16.6% upfront followed by ten monthly payments; pay-as-you-go uses reported payroll and no initial deposit. 17,18

Pie publishes a 3% credit-card convenience fee for new, single-state workers’ compensation policies, except in Florida, Nebraska, Maryland and Rhode Island. Its page does not describe this fee for multi-state or renewal policies. 17

Pie says each specific or blanket waiver-of-subrogation request carries a charge set by state rules and disclosed individually; the public FAQ does not give a dollar schedule. 16

Pie says partner agents receive commissions on new and renewal workers’ compensation policies, and its legal footer says compensation rates can vary among insurers. The reviewed current pages do not publish the standard rate or the amount attached to a buyer’s policy. 21,5

Vouch Specialty earns commissions on insurance sales and may also receive compensation based on the performance of the products sold. Its disclosure invites questions about compensation on a specific proposal or placement; it does not publish a commission percentage. 27

Vouch may pass through credit-card, debit-card or ACH transaction fees where permitted. Its disclosure lists wire and check as alternatives and says premium financing may be offered through Slash Eureka, Inc., doing business as Ascend, or an affiliate. 27

Claims assistance

Pie asks policyholders to report a workplace injury within 24 hours through its online form, 24/7 phone line or email. After intake, it says a claims professional follows up, determines whether the policy covers the claim and explains applicable benefits if accepted. 20

Pie’s agency FAQ says Pie manages workers’ compensation claims in 34 states and CorVel handles Alaska, Mississippi, Nevada, New Mexico and Oregon. That 39-state split is not reconciled with the separately advertised 40-state-plus-D.C. footprint. 21,11,22

Vouch advertises claims advocacy at no cost to its clients, with a dedicated advocate and help communicating with insurers. It describes assisting with reporting, documentation and follow-up. The issuing insurer decides coverage and pays covered claims. 48,49

Vouch’s help center links to a claim request form asking about the incident, its location, estimated loss and supporting documents. Your policy’s notice instructions remain important: confirm the correct recipient, deadline and any separate cyber incident-response contact. 50,51,49
