Alliance Risk vs
Pie Insurance
Alliance Risk and Pie Insurance compared for a growing employer separating workers’ compensation cash flow from its wider insurance program.
Introduction
For a startup hiring quickly, workers’ compensation creates both a coverage decision and a payroll-administration task. Pie markets a focused small-business program with affiliated insurers and a payroll-based payment option. Alliance Risk includes workers’ compensation in a broader commercial brokerage catalogue. The decision is whether to place that line separately or ask a broker to coordinate it with the rest of the program. 14 16 29 9

Key Differences Between Alliance Risk and Pie Insurance
A Workers’ Compensation Relationship Is Not the Whole Program
Pie’s affiliated insurers write its workers’ compensation business; its BOP, professional liability and other selected offerings use outside carrier routes. Alliance Risk describes placements across insurers without naming the company that would issue this employer’s workers’ compensation policy. A Pie quote can therefore be a product alternative within a wider buying plan, not necessarily a replacement for all brokerage work. The records do not establish whether Alliance Risk can place Pie. 16 33 20 1
For a company with software contracts or board requirements, ask separately about technology and management liability. Alliance Risk markets those lines, while Pie’s current catalogue is more focused. That difference in published offerings does not establish that every requested Alliance Risk line is available to the employer or that Pie’s partners cannot help beyond the listed pages. 9 14 18 19 20
Payroll-Based Billing Does Not Remove the Audit
Pie’s pay-as-you-go option uses reported payroll and advertises no initial deposit. Its premium-audit instructions still require an annual reconciliation, including employee records and potentially subcontractor certificates. A hiring plan that changes during the year therefore needs accurate ongoing data, not just a convenient payment schedule. 29 30
Alliance Risk’s public fee terms permit different payment and service charges but do not establish a comparable payroll-integration service. Ask what payroll reporting, owner treatment and audit assistance are included in its proposed placement. Compare total administration and payment costs against the actual Pie option, rather than assuming all monthly schedules work alike. 3 28
Use the State Kit for Claims and Availability
Pie publishes workplace-injury reporting channels and policyholder account tools. Its state-footprint descriptions and the agency FAQ’s claims-handler allocation are not fully reconciled. The actual state kit should identify the responsible handler; a national count is not a substitute for a California quote. Alliance Risk’s own product route and broker claims-assistance scope remain unresolved in its reviewed public disclosures. 31 26 32 22 5 3 7
A fleet addition needs separate attention: Pie says it stopped new and renewal commercial-auto issuance from January 2026, while continuing legacy claims service. Alliance Risk still lists commercial auto. Existing Pie auto paperwork or a claim page should not be mistaken for an available new-auto offer. 25 9
What to Confirm in Quotes
- Which legal insurer accepts the employees’ states, duties and class codes, and is the route direct or through an appointed agent?
- What payroll integration, reporting corrections and annual audit work are required under the chosen payment plan?
- Who supplies certificates, waivers and the current workplace-injury reporting instructions?
- Which broker or partner handles technology, board and vehicle exposures outside the workers’ compensation placement, and what fees apply to that coordination?
Service Comparison
Alliance Risk vs Pie Insurance: documented services and availability
| Criteria | Alliance Risk | Pie Insurance |
|---|---|---|
| Business role | Alliance Risk describes itself as an independent commercial insurance brokerage and risk advisor. Its terms and privacy policy identify Alliance Risk Insurance Services LLC as the subsidiary agency. 2,3,4 The terms name Alliance Risk Holding Company LLC, while the privacy policy names Alliance Risk, Inc. as the parent. The reviewed disclosures do not resolve that naming discrepancy. 3,4 | Pie Insurance is a small-business commercial insurance group whose producer, Pie Insurance Services, sells and administers policies. Its affiliated carriers write workers’ compensation, while selected other products are offered through outside carrier partners. 13,16,14,18,19,20,21 Pie Group Holdings, Inc. owns the public website and is the regulator-listed parent of Pie Casualty Insurance Company. AM Best identifies the rated carrier group as Pie Insurance Group. 15,35,33 Pie identifies Pie Insurance Services, Inc. as the licensed producer that sells and administers policies; its legal page publishes state licenses but is not a substitute for a current regulator lookup in the buyer’s state. 16,36 |
| Application process | The quote page starts with a contact request for company, website, contact details and a message. It advertises a free, no-obligation quote; the visible form does not provide a bindable offer. 6 For technology E&O, Alliance Risk requests service details, revenue, employee count, major client contracts, existing coverage, five-year claims history and customer concentration. It says it reviews the current program and approaches specialist carriers. 10 The general quote page advertises a quote within 24 hours, while the technology page gives 48–72 hours for standard software risks and five to ten business days for hardware, fintech, healthtech and AI. Treat timing as company estimates, not a binding deadline. 6,1 | A small business can start a workers’ compensation quote on Pie’s website or work through an insurance agent; appointed agencies use a separate partner portal. 13,12,14 The live direct quote starts with the business ZIP code. Pie’s workers’ compensation page says applicants also need their name, business name, annual payroll and class-code information. 17,14 Pie advertises an online workers’ compensation quote in about three minutes, while expressly stating that individual quote times vary. This is a company claim and does not establish how long underwriting or binding will take for a particular risk. 14,12 |
| Fees and compensation | Alliance Risk’s terms allow service, installment, cancellation and flat fees, and fees or commissions from insurers or other third parties. The terms do not state amounts or commission rates. A free quote does not establish free ongoing service. 3,6 | Published workers’ compensation options include annual, semi-annual, quarterly and monthly schedules, plus pay-as-you-go. The monthly schedule requires 16.6% upfront followed by ten monthly payments; pay-as-you-go uses reported payroll and no initial deposit. 28,29 Pie publishes a 3% credit-card convenience fee for new, single-state workers’ compensation policies, except in Florida, Nebraska, Maryland and Rhode Island. Its page does not describe this fee for multi-state or renewal policies. 28 Pie says each specific or blanket waiver-of-subrogation request carries a charge set by state rules and disclosed individually; the public FAQ does not give a dollar schedule. 27 Pie says partner agents receive commissions on new and renewal workers’ compensation policies, and its legal footer says compensation rates can vary among insurers. The reviewed current pages do not publish the standard rate or the amount attached to a buyer’s policy. 32,16 |
| Servicing and renewals | Alliance Risk offers a no-charge review of existing technology E&O policies, including gaps, retroactive dates and market alternatives. This is a company-described service, not evidence of review quality. 10 Alliance Risk advertises online program access and 24/7 support. Its contact page lists weekday telephone hours of 9am–6pm EST; an after-hours response commitment and renewal timetable were not established in those pages. 8,7 | Pie’s policyholder account tutorial describes payment-method updates, instant or custom workers’ compensation certificates, policy details and downloads for policies, state posters, certificates and endorsements. Agent-served customers may need their agent for a custom certificate. 26,27 Pie requires an annual workers’ compensation premium audit that replaces estimated payroll with actual payroll information. Its audit partner may request payroll and employee records, cash-expense details and subcontractor certificates, so the final premium can differ from the initial estimate. 30 Pie says it sends a workers’ compensation renewal quote about 30 days before the current term ends for the policyholder’s review and acceptance. 27 |
| Claims assistance | The reviewed home, contact, privacy and terms pages do not establish a dedicated claims-reporting procedure or the scope of broker claims advocacy. Privacy references to sharing information with claims participants do not establish who manages a loss. 8,7,4,3 | Pie asks policyholders to report a workplace injury within 24 hours through its online form, 24/7 phone line or email. After intake, it says a claims professional follows up, determines whether the policy covers the claim and explains applicable benefits if accepted. 31 Pie’s agency FAQ says Pie manages workers’ compensation claims in 34 states and CorVel handles Alaska, Mississippi, Nevada, New Mexico and Oregon. That 39-state split is not reconciled with the separately advertised 40-state-plus-D.C. footprint. 32,22,33 |
