Pie Insurance vs Relm Insurance

Separate payroll-driven workers’ compensation from liability and operational losses involving AI.

Introduction

An AI company hiring employees and selling software has separate exposures to workplace injuries, customer claims and failures in its own technology dependencies. Pie’s core workers’ compensation business and Relm’s AI products address different parts of that problem. They may belong in the same insurance program without being substitutes for one another. 3 32 34

Where Each Provider Shines

Where Pie Insurance Shines

  • Small businesses can start a workers’ compensation quote directly online or through an insurance agent. 2,1,3
  • Workers’ compensation payment options include pay-as-you-go using reported payroll, with no initial deposit. 17,18

Where Relm Insurance Shines

  • Cyber and technology E&O designed for AI developers 32,31
  • First-party cover for third-party AI failures 34

Key Differences Between Pie Insurance and Relm Insurance

Follow the Insurer for the Particular Product

Pie’s producer sells and administers coverage, while its affiliated insurers write workers’ compensation. Its BOP, general liability, professional liability and cyber offerings involve outside carrier partners whose identities are not fully disclosed on the reviewed product pages. A Pie cyber proposal therefore needs its own insurer and form before comparison with Relm’s AI coverage. 5 8 9

Relm distinguishes the Bermuda insurer and US producer/MGA, and the reviewed public documentation does not establish the issuer for a California AI policy. Neither Pie’s affiliated workers’ compensation carrier nor Relm’s digital-asset fronting partner should be carried across to a different product by assumption. 27 35 5

Payroll Changes and AI Changes Need Different Information

Pie offers pay-as-you-go workers’ compensation using reported payroll and requires an annual audit to reconcile estimated and actual information. That process should track hiring and job duties. It does not replace disclosure of a new AI product, model integration or contractual commitment under a separate technology policy. 18 19 31

Relm’s NOVAAI focuses on developer liability, while RESCAAI describes the business’s own losses from third-party AI failure. A finance team should budget these against different exposure measures instead of comparing a payroll-based payment with an AI policy’s premium as though they bought the same protection. 32 34 17

One Event May Require More Than One Notice

Pie provides workplace-injury reporting channels and describes a state-dependent split between its claims team and CorVel, with public footprint counts that are not fully reconciled. Relm describes its own claims support, but the actual policy supplies the notice requirements. An event involving injured staff and a customer technology claim needs a pre-agreed reporting map, not a choice of whichever portal is easiest. 20 21 11 38

The broader catalogue also needs current-product discipline: Pie says it stopped new and renewal commercial-auto issuance from January 2026. Older auto materials should not be used to assemble a present-day complete program. 14

What to Confirm in Quotes

  • Confirm employee locations, class codes, payroll reporting and audit duties for the workers’ compensation proposal. 3 19
  • Obtain a named insurer and policy for any Pie partner cyber/E&O proposal, then compare the intended AI exposures with Relm’s offered wording. 8 9 32
  • Establish California AI access and a separate notice recipient for each type of loss before relying on the combined program. 27 20 38

Service Comparison

Pie Insurance vs Relm Insurance: documented services and availability

CriteriaPie InsuranceRelm Insurance
Business role

Pie Insurance is a small-business commercial insurance group whose producer, Pie Insurance Services, sells and administers policies. Its affiliated carriers write workers’ compensation, while selected other products are offered through outside carrier partners. 2,5,3,7,8,9,10

Pie Group Holdings, Inc. owns the public website and is the regulator-listed parent of Pie Casualty Insurance Company. AM Best identifies the rated carrier group as Pie Insurance Group. 4,24,22

Pie identifies Pie Insurance Services, Inc. as the licensed producer that sells and administers policies; its legal page publishes state licenses but is not a substitute for a current regulator lookup in the buyer’s state. 5,25

Relm Insurance is a specialty insurance business serving emerging industries, including artificial intelligence. Its Bermuda insurer and US distribution operation have distinct roles. 26,28,27

Relm identifies Relm Insurance Ltd. as its Bermuda-regulated insurer and Relm US Insurance Solutions Inc. as a US licensed producer. It describes its US operation as a managing general agent (MGA), an intermediary with delegated insurance authority. The Bermuda entity says it deals only through appropriately licensed brokers. 27,28

Access to insurers

Pie says workers’ compensation is underwritten by The Pie Insurance Company (NAIC 21857) and affiliates. AM Best says Pie began writing all of that business through The Pie Insurance Company and Pie Casualty Insurance Company (NAIC 10997) on January 1, 2024. 5,22,23,24

AM Best affirmed Pie Casualty Insurance Company’s pooled A- (Excellent) financial strength rating with a Stable outlook, effective April 24, 2026. A rating is an opinion of insurer financial strength, not a guarantee that a claim is covered or paid. 22

Pie says business owner’s, general liability and professional liability policies are underwritten by unaffiliated third-party insurers, and its cyber page refers to carrier partners. The reviewed public pages do not name the currently participating insurers for these products. 5,7,8,9,10

Relm’s fronting announcement names Trisura Specialty Insurance Company in connection with US digital-asset risks, including D&O, cyber, technology E&O and crime. A fronting insurer issues the policy while another insurer supplies risk capacity. This announcement does not establish Trisura as the issuer of every Relm product or of a California AI policy. 35

Servicing and renewals

Pie’s policyholder account tutorial describes payment-method updates, instant or custom workers’ compensation certificates, policy details and downloads for policies, state posters, certificates and endorsements. Agent-served customers may need their agent for a custom certificate. 15,16

Pie requires an annual workers’ compensation premium audit that replaces estimated payroll with actual payroll information. Its audit partner may request payroll and employee records, cash-expense details and subcontractor certificates, so the final premium can differ from the initial estimate. 19

Pie says it sends a workers’ compensation renewal quote about 30 days before the current term ends for the policyholder’s review and acceptance. 16

The reviewed contact and terms pages provide general-inquiry and complaint channels but do not explain a customer self-service portal, certificate turnaround, endorsement process or renewal timetable. Ask which tasks your broker, the MGA and the issuing insurer will handle. 36,38

Fees and compensation

Published workers’ compensation options include annual, semi-annual, quarterly and monthly schedules, plus pay-as-you-go. The monthly schedule requires 16.6% upfront followed by ten monthly payments; pay-as-you-go uses reported payroll and no initial deposit. 17,18

Pie publishes a 3% credit-card convenience fee for new, single-state workers’ compensation policies, except in Florida, Nebraska, Maryland and Rhode Island. Its page does not describe this fee for multi-state or renewal policies. 17

Pie says each specific or blanket waiver-of-subrogation request carries a charge set by state rules and disclosed individually; the public FAQ does not give a dollar schedule. 16

Pie says partner agents receive commissions on new and renewal workers’ compensation policies, and its legal footer says compensation rates can vary among insurers. The reviewed current pages do not publish the standard rate or the amount attached to a buyer’s policy. 21,5

The reviewed legal, terms and inquiry pages do not disclose buyer-specific broker fees, commission rates, minimum premiums or total California placement costs. Obtain the premium, fees and applicable taxes separately in a written quote. 27,38,36

Claims assistance

Pie asks policyholders to report a workplace injury within 24 hours through its online form, 24/7 phone line or email. After intake, it says a claims professional follows up, determines whether the policy covers the claim and explains applicable benefits if accepted. 20

Pie’s agency FAQ says Pie manages workers’ compensation claims in 34 states and CorVel handles Alaska, Mississippi, Nevada, New Mexico and Oregon. That 39-state split is not reconciled with the separately advertised 40-state-plus-D.C. footprint. 21,11,22

Relm says its claims team manages claims and offers a dedicated concierge within 24 hours of notification. This is a company service statement, not an independently measured response or settlement record. Its terms name Crawford & Co. for global claims response and KSW for US response; confirm the notice instructions in the actual policy. 37,38
