Embroker vs Hiscox

Embroker is a startup-oriented broker with proprietary tech and management programs; Hiscox is a small-business carrier with a public online quote. Compare brokerage programs with carrier-direct policies.

Introduction

A funded technology company that needs directors and officers liability plus technology errors and omissions is not choosing between two copies of the same application. Embroker is a broker and program distributor whose Management Insurance Suite (EMIS) and Tech E&O/Cyber program name insurers and appetite rules. Hiscox offers small-business general liability, professional liability, cyber and a business owner’s policy. An Embroker tech package is not, by itself, a Hiscox Insurance Company Inc. policy. 8 42

Where Each Provider Shines

Where Embroker Shines

  • Its Management Insurance Suite brings several management coverages into one application, with technology E&O/cyber for eligible technology businesses. 9
  • Separate technology and law-firm packages group coverage around those businesses’ activities, subject to the offered policy terms. 17,16

Where Hiscox Shines

  • Hiscox Inc., a Delaware producer, handles online small-business sales; Hiscox Insurance Company Inc. is the affiliated admitted insurer named for Hiscox NOW products. 31,30
  • Eligible applicants can quote Hiscox general liability, professional liability/E&O, cyber and a business owner’s policy online. 42,33,34,35,36,28

Key Differences Between Embroker and Hiscox

Broker of Record Versus Hiscox as Insurer

Embroker’s terms require a broker- or agent-of-record designation to use its brokerage service. Hiscox’s consumer path does not appoint a third-party broker; Hiscox Insurance Company Inc. is the admitted company for the Hiscox small-business products. If you later move brokers, Embroker says you lose its account-based certificate tools. 2 50

EMIS and Tech Programs Versus Hiscox Core Lines

Embroker’s Management Insurance Suite combines directors and officers, employment practices and fiduciary liability, with Everspan named for EMIS and excess Tech E&O/Cyber. Its tech program targets private for-profit technology companies below $300 million revenue. Hiscox lists general liability, professional liability, cyber and a business owner’s policy for online quoting, and refers workers compensation, commercial auto and group health to partner pages. Those Hiscox pages do not list an EMIS-style directors and officers suite under the same names. 9 42

How Quoting Starts

Embroker’s public quote-start asks for company name and whether the company has a website, then underwriting can still decline. Hiscox starts with a zip code and business type and may route some classes to specialists or partner carriers. Neither start is a bind. 26 42

What to Confirm in Quotes

  • Named insurer on any Embroker proposal (Everspan or another company) versus Hiscox Insurance Company Inc. 9

  • Whether you need directors and officers, employment practices or fiduciary coverage, which Embroker packages in EMIS. Hiscox’s online product list used as a source does not use those EMIS product names. 9

  • Tech E&O exclusions and AI endorsements on Embroker’s program versus Hiscox professional liability and cyber forms. 34 18

Service Comparison

Embroker vs Hiscox: documented services and availability

CriteriaEmbrokerHiscox
Business role

Embroker Insurance Services LLC is the producer named in its public lawyers’ liability specimen. Florida’s corporate record lists Embroker, Inc. as the LLC’s authorized member. That identifies a corporate relationship, not the insurer on your policy. 15,7

Embroker distributes proprietary programs through its own channel and through other brokers using Embroker Access. Its terms also allow it to perform underwriting work for insurers under their guidelines; the issuing insurer bears the policy obligations. 10,2

The reviewed corporate record identifies Embroker, Inc. as an authorized member of the producer LLC; it does not establish Embroker, Inc.’s ultimate beneficial ownership. 7

Hiscox is the brand name used by its U.S. insurance businesses. Website terms identify Hiscox Inc., a Delaware corporation headquartered in Atlanta, as a licensed insurance intermediary for admitted and surplus-lines business. About Hiscox US names Hiscox Insurance Company Inc. (NAIC 10200) as the affiliated insurer and Hiscox Inc. as its general agent. Broker-only pages are restricted to licensed market professionals; the small-business section is the consumer product path. 31,30

In California, Hiscox Inc. says it does business as Hiscox Insurance Agency and publishes producer license number 0F09668. Its current producer-license status remains independently unverified; the number is company-reported. 32,49,37,31

Coverage lines

Embroker’s August 2026 Management Insurance Suite (EMIS) brings D&O, employment practices, fiduciary liability and, for eligible technology companies, Tech E&O/Cyber into one application. Buyers may select individual coverages or a bundle. 9

The broker Tech E&O/Cyber program targets private, for-profit technology companies with revenue below $300 million. It requires multifactor authentication for accounts above $5 million in revenue and excludes businesses involved in crypto, blockchain or cannabis. 11

Embroker’s retail Tech E&O page lists intellectual-property infringement, copyright and libel among exclusions, while its broker program advertises software-code infringement coverage. The public descriptions do not reconcile that difference; request the proposed form and endorsements for your activities. 12,11

Embroker describes an AI endorsement for eligible Tech E&O/Cyber quotes addressing AI services, discrimination allegations and regulatory-investigation defense. It advertises up to $150,000 for algorithm-removal expenses. Obtain the endorsement to check triggers, exclusions and how that sublimit relates to the policy limit. 18

Embroker Access advertises up to $5 million of excess Tech E&O/Cyber above eligible underlying insurance. Its appetite requires a primary limit of at least $1 million and Tech E&O, with or without cyber; cyber-only underlying insurance is ineligible. 13

The retail Tech E&O FAQ says Embroker’s excess product cannot sit above an Embroker primary policy. An Embroker primary buyer therefore needs a separate answer about how to obtain higher limits. 12

The broker lawyers’ professional liability (LPL) program lists firms with 1–25 attorneys, no claims or law-license disciplinary actions, a physical address and risk-management and docket controls. It advertises pre-claim assistance without a deductible and defense-cost options. 14

The public Everest LPL specimen uses claims-made coverage: its insuring agreement ties protection to when a claim is made and reported and to a retroactive date for the underlying work. Its base wording makes claim expenses reduce the liability limit. Current marketing also describes defense costs outside the limit, so check which endorsements your quote includes. 15,14

The main catalogue offers business owner’s policies, general liability, commercial crime, cyber, D&O, employment practices, fiduciary liability, professional liability (including lawyers’ liability), Tech E&O/Cyber and workers’ compensation. 8

Embroker also has direct offerings for commercial auto, commercial property, product liability, surety bonds and key person life insurance, plus venture capital asset protection (VCAP) for investment firms. 21,22,24,23,20,25

The technology package combines Tech E&O/Cyber with a business owner’s policy. The law-firm package groups lawyers’ professional liability, cyber, a business owner’s policy and workers’ compensation. The package names do not establish identical terms across industries. 17,16

Hiscox directly markets and offers online quotes for general liability, professional liability (errors and omissions), cyber security insurance and a business owner’s policy that combines general liability with commercial property. IT pages present those same lines for technology consultants rather than a separately named technology E&O policy. Website examples and coverage lists are illustrative; the issued policy controls. 42,33,34,35,36,28

Hired/non-owned auto and commercial crime are described as upgrades to a Hiscox business owner’s policy, not standalone Hiscox policies. Crime is not sold separately and is not available in all states. HNOA is tied to the BOP occurrence limit and does not replace commercial auto for vehicles the business owns or regularly operates. 46,47,36

Hiscox also markets partner coverage for workers’ compensation (Hartford Fire, generally requiring a Hiscox general-liability policy), commercial auto (GEICO referral and, separately, CyberPolicy), medical malpractice (NOW Insurance), short-term liability (Thimble/Markel), and CyberPolicy quotes for umbrella, directors and officers, and employment practices liability. Those pages are partner access paths, not proof that Hiscox Insurance Company Inc. issues the policy. 37,38,39,40,41,52

Access to insurers

Embroker names Everspan Indemnity Insurance Company as the insurer for EMIS and its excess Tech E&O/Cyber program. Its lawyers’ professional liability program names Everest National Insurance Company. These are product-specific relationships, not one carrier for the entire catalogue. 9,13,14,15

Hiscox NOW appetite and About Hiscox US say admitted small-business products described there are underwritten by Hiscox Insurance Company Inc., a Chicago-based insurer licensed in all 50 states and D.C. The California Department of Insurance independently identifies that company as an Illinois-domiciled property-and-casualty insurer, NAIC 10200, California Company ID 1439-9, authorized in California since 14 September 1953 with unlimited-normal status. Hiscox’s California marketing page also cites Illinois license number 8754, which is not the CDI company ID; reconcile names and numbers on the quote. 50,51,30,49,32

Hiscox refers small-business buyers to other insurers or marketplaces for several products: workers’ compensation is underwritten by Hartford Fire Insurance; the commercial-auto page refers customers to GEICO and affiliates; medical malpractice is accessed through NOW Insurance, which Hiscox says is not affiliated with the Hiscox group; short-term liability is underwritten by Markel Insurance Company through Thimble. A separate other-insurance page instead partners with CyberPolicy for commercial auto, umbrella, directors and officers, and employment practices liability. The issuing company on a partner quote is therefore not assumed to be Hiscox Insurance Company Inc. 37,38,39,40,41

Hiscox Inc. says it is an approved Lloyd’s coverholder and underwrites surplus-lines business on behalf of Lloyd’s Syndicates 33 and 3624, with U.S. surplus-lines placements made by licensed surplus-lines brokers. Terms also say Hiscox Inc. may place admitted and surplus-lines business with Hiscox Insurance Company Inc., other domestic insurers, and Lloyd’s syndicates. That surplus-lines route is described as distinct from the online small-business catalogue. 30,31

Application process

The public quote-start screen asks for a company name and whether the company has a website. It links the terms and compensation disclosure before continuing. 26

An account alone does not appoint Embroker as your broker. Using its brokerage service requires a broker- or agent-of-record designation and exclusive work with Embroker for those services unless otherwise agreed. 2

An application may need additional underwriting information or be declined; a quote itself does not put insurance in force. 2

Hiscox says eligible buyers can get a small-business quote online by entering a zip code and answering questions, and that general liability, professional liability, cyber and BOP are offered online. Licensed advisors are available by phone at posted Eastern Time hours. The general-liability FAQ says that after the application is completed, the policy is issued by email and a certificate appears in welcome documents. These are company-described steps; eligibility and binding conditions require confirmation on the actual application. 42,33,27

Fees and compensation

Embroker’s software is free. Insurance services can generate insurer commissions, contingent compensation linked to business results, and supplemental commissions. Embroker may also negotiate client fees alongside or instead of commissions, approved before binding, usually in writing. 3

Payment processors and premium-finance lenders can add their own charges. Ask for the total cost and installment terms separately from Embroker’s compensation. 2

Hiscox’s general-liability FAQ says buyers may pay annually or monthly with no additional fees, using debit or credit card. The California small-business page also lists monthly, quarterly, semi-annual and annual options with no fees. Product pages advertise up to a 5% discount for bundling certain Hiscox coverages. Published tables of monthly cost are labeled illustrative and are not quotes. 33,32,36

The reviewed Hiscox small-business, terms-of-use and appetite pages do not publish a buyer-facing commission, producer-fee or contingent-commission schedule. The 2026 appetite guide states that actual cost, commission, premium and coverage may vary with underwriting. Amounts payable besides premium therefore remain not disclosed in those sources. 49,31,33
