Coterie Insurance vs
The Hartford
How Coterie’s agent-only MGA platform for micro BOP and MPL differs from The Hartford’s direct small-business quoting as an insurer.
Introduction
A home-based consultancy that already has a local agent is not choosing two consumer storefronts. Coterie exists so that agent can bind a Coterie program. The Hartford can still sell you a policy itself. They overlap on BOP and general liability labels; they do not overlap as distribution models. 1 30

Key Differences Between Coterie Insurance and the Hartford
MGA for Agents Versus Insurer You Can Buy Direct
Coterie Applications, Inc. runs the platform; Coterie Insurance Agency, LLC is the named agency. Carrier partners issue the policies. The site sends business owners to an agent rather than a Coterie retail cart. 1 8
The Hartford is the brand of a holding company whose subsidiaries underwrite. You may purchase without an agent by calling or quoting online, or you may use an independent Hartford agent. Treating Coterie as “another Hartford” misstates who holds the risk. 27 30
Appetite, Workers’ Compensation and Auto
Coterie’s core catalogue is BOP, standalone general liability and miscellaneous professional liability, with a BOP guide capping revenue and employee counts (tighter for contractors). Its claims page says it does not write workers’ compensation or automobile policies; hired/non-owned auto appears only as a BOP liability endorsement. 2 11
The Hartford markets BOP, workers’ compensation and commercial auto among other lines, but commercial auto for small businesses is not on its self-serve quote path. A buyer who needs WC plus auto is not choosing two complete substitutes from the public catalogues. 32 35 40
Coterie’s MPL guide conflicts with broader “50-state” marketing on where professional liability is admitted. Hartford separately warns products are not available in all states or for all businesses. Confirm the state, class and form on both quotes. 8 25
Binding Path and Published Fees
An agent starts a Coterie quote from the business name and address, then binds eligible standard risks. Coterie advertises bindable quotes in under two minutes, qualified by its terms—that is company marketing, not a promised time for every class. Policyholders use My Policy Center but are told to ask the agent first about coverage questions. Each location needs its own Coterie policy rather than multiple addresses on one policy. 5 10
Hartford’s public portal runs Basics through Confirmation. Coterie publishes a one-time policy fee, $7 installment fees and other small charges, plus a possible nonrefundable Manage My Risk Program fee. Hartford discloses producer commissions without a buyer fee schedule. Compare the all-in Coterie invoice with Hartford’s premium and any agent fee. 31 8 48
What to Confirm in Quotes
- Who the customer of record is: your independent agent on Coterie versus Hartford direct or a Hartford-appointed agent. 1 30
- WC and auto: Coterie will not write those lines; Hartford may, subject to underwriting and the auto channel. 11 35
- MPL state list and Coterie location rule against Hartford’s actual professional or technology E&O form, including California EPL limits on Hartford’s BOP story. 8 39
Service Comparison
Coterie Insurance vs The Hartford: documented services and availability
| Criteria | Coterie Insurance | The Hartford |
|---|---|---|
| Business role | Coterie Insurance is a managing general agency and digital small-business insurance platform built primarily for licensed agents, brokers and distribution partners. It is not a direct-to-consumer insurance marketplace; a business owner is directed to work with an agent. 1,6,19 Coterie Applications, Inc. provides the platform under the website terms. Florida's current corporate record lists it as the member of Coterie Insurance Agency, LLC, the agency named in Coterie's footer; Massachusetts separately lists the agency with an active property-and-casualty producer license through December 28, 2026. 8,1,22,23 Coterie's website lists multiple investors, and Allianz X records Coterie as a current direct investment after leading a 2025 Series C round. The reviewed sources do not establish an acquisition, a controlling parent or Coterie's complete current ownership table. 1,19,20,22 | The Hartford is the brand of The Hartford Insurance Group, Inc., a financial holding company whose subsidiaries underwrite property-and-casualty insurance, employee benefits and other financial products. Independent agents and brokers, and Hartford employees who sell insurance, distribute those products. The brand is not itself the insurer on a policy. 27,48,44,30 |
| Application process | A licensed agent starts a quote in Coterie's dashboard with the client's business name and address, selects the principal industry, confirms or edits prefilled details, customizes coverage and pays to bind an eligible policy. Business owners who do not already have an agent can use Coterie's agent finder. 5,6,2 Coterie advertises bindable quotes in under two minutes for eligible standard risks. Its terms qualify that claim: a quote or estimate is not an insurance contract, and coverage remains subject to underwriting approval, eligibility verification and formal policy issuance. 6,8 | The Hartford says eligible small-business buyers can get a free quote online in minutes or by phone, and can also buy through independent agents. Its public quote-and-buy portal shows steps from Basics through Payment and Confirmation. It also says buyers can purchase without an agent. Commercial auto for small businesses is not currently offered on that online path and may be quoted through a local agency or Tivly. Management-liability pages direct buyers to find a local agent. 25,24,31,30,40,42 |
| Coverage lines | Coterie's current core catalogue consists of a business owner's policy (BOP), standalone general liability and miscellaneous professional liability (MPL/E&O). A BOP combines liability with property coverage; the other two are distinct policies. 2,4,3,14 Coterie's December 2025 BOP guide states eligibility of up to $10 million in revenue and 50 employees, reduced to $5 million and 15 employees for contractors. It lists up to $1 million in building value and $500,000 in business personal property, with limits and availability still varying by state, industry and quote. 13,8 Coterie currently markets cyber, workplace violence, employment practices liability, restaurant, liquor liability and contractors equipment endorsements. Its BOP guide also lists optional hired and non-owned auto liability, equipment breakdown, drone liability and other property extensions. These are optional additions, not evidence of separate standalone policies. 12,13,15,16 Coterie's MPL is a claims-made professional liability policy for listed service professions. Its current guide says the basic policy includes a 60-day extended reporting period and offers longer periods for purchase; retroactive coverage and limits depend on the selected terms and eligibility. 14,8 Coterie's claims page expressly says it does not write workers' compensation or automobile policies. Hired and non-owned auto appears only as an optional liability endorsement in the BOP guide and should not be read as commercial auto physical-damage coverage. 11,13 | Documented Hartford offerings for businesses include a business owner’s policy (general liability, commercial property and business income), stand-alone general liability and commercial property, workers’ compensation, cyber (including BOP data-breach add-ons, CyberChoice First Response and FailSafe Technology E&O), miscellaneous professional liability, employment practices liability, commercial auto and hired/non-owned auto, management-liability packages (Private Choice Premier: directors and officers, EPL, fiduciary, crime, kidnap and ransom), commercial umbrella, employee benefits, and inland marine for midsize and large accounts. Actual forms, limits and availability vary by product, state and underwriting. 24,32,36,37,38,39,40,41,42,44,47,46 The Hartford’s employment-practices page states there is no built-in EPL coverage in California, Minnesota, North Dakota or New York, and that the EPL program described on that page does not apply to EPL coverage written in California. Coverages also vary by state and class. 39 |
| Fees and compensation | Coterie's terms say new and renewal policies have a one-time policy fee whose amount varies, successful installments carry a $7 fee, late fees can be up to $10 and insufficient-funds fees up to $35. Fees vary by state and line, can be nonrefundable, and additional charges must be disclosed before bind or renewal. 8 A Coterie policy can include a separate Manage My Risk Program fee that the terms call fully earned on payment and nonrefundable after midterm cancellation. The terms say participation, or an accepted outside risk program, affects the insurance premium but do not publish the program fee amount. 8 Coterie's privacy policy says it may pay commissions to certain agents through a third-party processor. The reviewed public sources do not state the commission rate or whether additional producer compensation applies to a particular buyer's policy. 9,8 | The Hartford discloses that it pays independent producers base commissions (a percentage of premium or a fixed amount per policy), and may also pay contingent or supplemental commissions, fees for services, delegated-underwriting compensation and other benefits. Employees who sell insurance may receive extra compensation beyond salary. Producers may charge their own customer fees that are not Hartford premium. The reviewed pages do not publish the commission rate or any Hartford-charged service fee that would apply to a particular buyer’s policy. Published “average premiums” are company-reported estimates, not quotes. 48,30,25,24 |
| Servicing and renewals | Policyholders can use My Policy Center, request policy changes, generate certificates and start a claim online. Coterie tells policyholders to use their agent or broker first for coverage questions and provides public sample BOP, general liability and professional liability forms for orientation. 10,8 Coterie's policyholder FAQ says each business location must have its own policy rather than listing several operating addresses on one Coterie policy. 10 Unless a policy says otherwise, Coterie's terms describe a 12-month policy that may renew automatically. Renewal charges may use the payment method on file, and the policyholder can contact Coterie or use account tools to change renewal preferences. 8 | The Hartford says small-business policyholders can retrieve certificates of insurance online at any time, manage billing and policy details through My Account or its mobile app, and, for workers’ compensation, use pay-as-you-go premium based on actual payroll and a My Workers’ Comp Connection portal. Cyber policyholders are described as having access to a Cyber Center with training and related resources. The reviewed sources did not disclose a published schedule of certificate, endorsement or installment-service fees charged to the insured. 25,35,36,38,49 |
