Coterie Insurance vs
TechInsurance
How an agent’s Coterie package and TechInsurance’s brokerage route differ for a small firm adding employees and technology contracts.
Introduction
A small consulting firm adding its first employees may be offered a Coterie business owner’s policy by an agent while also shopping through TechInsurance. Coterie supplies programs to agents; TechInsurance is a buyer-facing agency and brokerage comparing insurer quotes. The decision is partly about the underlying policy and partly about who assembles the rest of the insurance program. 6 25 26

Key Differences Between Coterie Insurance and TechInsurance
One Program Does Not Define the Agent’s Whole Offering
Coterie’s core products are BOP, general liability and miscellaneous professional liability. It expressly says it does not write workers’ compensation or auto policies. That does not mean an agent offering Coterie cannot arrange those lines elsewhere. TechInsurance lists workers’ compensation and commercial auto among its marketed options, creating a route to request a broader proposal without establishing which insurer will accept each line. 2 11 29 24
Ask the existing agent and TechInsurance for the same schedule of required policies. Comparing only the Coterie premium with a multi-policy TechInsurance proposal would hide both missing lines and differences in the broker’s assignment. Neither source establishes that TechInsurance can place this account into Coterie itself. 5 31
Professional Advice and Technology Delivery Need Different Questions
Coterie’s miscellaneous professional liability guide identifies eligible service professions; its cyber options include an endorsement. TechInsurance separately markets technology E&O with cyber. A consultant who also deploys software should ask how the quoted form defines professional services, technology services and cyber losses, rather than treating MPL and tech E&O as interchangeable. 14 15 30
Coterie’s broad geographic statements and its MPL guide do not fully agree. The reviewed public documentation preserves that conflict; it is not a reason to declare MPL unavailable in California. TechInsurance’s California sales page likewise does not guarantee acceptance of a particular consulting activity. Obtain current product-specific eligibility from both routes. 7 14 28
A Second Location Changes the Service Discussion
Coterie's policyholder FAQ says each business location must have its own policy rather than listing several operating addresses on one Coterie policy. 10
For a firm moving from a home office into leased premises, ask how each address and effective date will appear in the proposal. TechInsurance documents account-manager support and certificates, but its reviewed pages do not establish a comparable location rule or a contractual renewal-review schedule. Those are questions for the assigned team, not evidence of absent service. 26 25
Coterie publishes policy, installment and possible risk-program fees; TechInsurance points to SPG’s commission and possible client-fee disclosure. Request the full annual cost of the completed program, including separately placed employee coverage and any financing, rather than comparing an installment amount with an agency fee. 8 33
What to Confirm in Quotes
- Which policies sit inside Coterie’s program, which are separate placements, and who services each? Ask TechInsurance for the equivalent insurer-by-line schedule. 8 31
- Does the professional-liability wording cover the actual consulting and software work, and is cyber an endorsement or a separate policy? 14 15 30
- How do a new location and first hires affect policy count, renewal approval and total fees? 10 8 33

Coterie Insurance vs TechInsurance: documented services and availability
| Criteria | Coterie Insurance | TechInsurance |
|---|---|---|
| Business role | Coterie Insurance is a managing general agency and digital small-business insurance platform built primarily for licensed agents, brokers and distribution partners. It is not a direct-to-consumer insurance marketplace; a business owner is directed to work with an agent. 1,6,19 Coterie Applications, Inc. provides the platform under the website terms. Florida's current corporate record lists it as the member of Coterie Insurance Agency, LLC, the agency named in Coterie's footer; Massachusetts separately lists the agency with an active property-and-casualty producer license through December 28, 2026. 8,1,22,23 Coterie's website lists multiple investors, and Allianz X records Coterie as a current direct investment after leading a 2025 Series C round. The reviewed sources do not establish an acquisition, a controlling parent or Coterie's complete current ownership table. 1,19,20,22 | TechInsurance is a small-business insurance agency and brokerage. Its legal disclosure identifies the business as a division of Specialty Program Group LLC, doing business in California as SPG Insurance Solutions. 26,32,33 TechInsurance describes itself as part of Insureon and HUB International. Its history says HUB acquired Insureon’s digital agency in 2022 while Bold Penguin acquired the technology platform; HUB’s acquisition announcement placed the agency operations within Specialty Program Group. 25,26,35 |
| Application process | A licensed agent starts a quote in Coterie's dashboard with the client's business name and address, selects the principal industry, confirms or edits prefilled details, customizes coverage and pays to bind an eligible policy. Business owners who do not already have an agent can use Coterie's agent finder. 5,6,2 Coterie advertises bindable quotes in under two minutes for eligible standard risks. Its terms qualify that claim: a quote or estimate is not an insurance contract, and coverage remains subject to underwriting approval, eligibility verification and formal policy issuance. 6,8 | TechInsurance describes a single application for comparing multiple insurance quotes, followed by policy purchase and online coverage management, with licensed-agent guidance available. 25 TechInsurance’s account instructions warn that quotes may take time to appear after an application is submitted; an application is not confirmation of bound coverage. 26 |
| Availability | Coterie says BOP and general liability are admitted products across all 50 states. That is not account-level availability: its terms make every product subject to jurisdiction, business class, underwriting and formal issuance, and temporary catastrophe moratoriums can stop new BOP binding in specified areas. 7,8,18 Coterie's broad broker page says BOP, general liability and professional liability are admitted in all 50 states, but its December 2025 MPL guide says MPL is unavailable in DC, Illinois, Massachusetts, Montana, North Dakota and Virginia. A newer quick-start page narrows the statement to BOP and general liability in all 50 states and MPL in most states. Use the product guide and a current quote for MPL eligibility. 5,7,14 As of September 11, 2026, Coterie says eligible BOP risks 3 to 26 miles from the coast can be considered in Florida, Texas, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina, generally with up to $250,000 of business personal property and no building coverage in the coastal zone. Risks closer than 3 miles remain ineligible under this expansion, and Florida building coverage is unavailable statewide. 17,18 | TechInsurance’s California sales page offers an application and quote-comparison route for general liability, professional E&O, business owner’s policies, workers’ compensation, cyber, commercial auto, fidelity bonds and umbrella coverage. This establishes a marketed California route, not acceptance of a particular startup or availability of every listed product. 28 TechInsurance reports licensing in all 50 states and Washington, D.C., and lists California license 0L09546. Current regulator status, authority and appointments were not independently verified for this profile. 27 |
| Servicing and renewals | Policyholders can use My Policy Center, request policy changes, generate certificates and start a claim online. Coterie tells policyholders to use their agent or broker first for coverage questions and provides public sample BOP, general liability and professional liability forms for orientation. 10,8 Coterie's policyholder FAQ says each business location must have its own policy rather than listing several operating addresses on one Coterie policy. 10 Unless a policy says otherwise, Coterie's terms describe a 12-month policy that may renew automatically. Renewal charges may use the payment method on file, and the policyholder can contact Coterie or use account tools to change renewal preferences. 8 | TechInsurance says it provides a dedicated account manager and online certificate access. Its instructions require an active policy for a certificate request and direct urgent requests to the account manager. 24,26 The reviewed About and Contact pages do not establish a renewal remarketing schedule, a contractual response-time commitment, or the scope of dedicated support for a complex growth-stage insurance program. 25,26 |
| Fees and compensation | Coterie's terms say new and renewal policies have a one-time policy fee whose amount varies, successful installments carry a $7 fee, late fees can be up to $10 and insufficient-funds fees up to $35. Fees vary by state and line, can be nonrefundable, and additional charges must be disclosed before bind or renewal. 8 A Coterie policy can include a separate Manage My Risk Program fee that the terms call fully earned on payment and nonrefundable after midterm cancellation. The terms say participation, or an accepted outside risk program, affects the insurance premium but do not publish the program fee amount. 8 Coterie's privacy policy says it may pay commissions to certain agents through a third-party processor. The reviewed public sources do not state the commission rate or whether additional producer compensation applies to a particular buyer's policy. 9,8 | TechInsurance directs buyers to SPG’s compensation disclosure, which describes insurer commissions, contingent and supplemental payments, and possible negotiated client fees. Some placements may involve both commission and client-paid fees; quote-specific amounts are not disclosed there. 32,33 SPG discloses that strategic insurers may pay enhanced compensation and that some of it may incentivize employees to prioritize those insurers’ products. Ask which markets were approached and how the placement is compensated. 33 |
