Corgi vs
USI Insurance Services
When a technology company should use Corgi’s named-paper online path versus USI’s consultative middle-market technology practice.
Introduction
A software company that wants to bind general liability or directors and officers coverage from a browser is using a different buying path than a company that needs cargo, contingent business income, and a board-facing directors and officers discussion in one program. Corgi documents named issuing paper and a self-serve application for technology companies. USI documents a Technology practice that starts with a practice email or local office and does not name the insurer on its product pages. Those workflows overlap only for lines both actually quote for your legal entity and states; keeping both is a choice, not a default package. 2 32

Key Differences Between Corgi and USI
Who Issues the Policy Versus Who Places It
Corgi identifies issuing carriers and risk-retention-group paper for specified products, including admitted-partner and Technology Risk Reciprocal Group arrangements. That lets a buyer read the risk-bearing name on a specimen or policy, subject to the product and state. 9 17
USI is not a substitute for Corgi’s named-paper disclosure. Its commissions page describes a licensed producer that obtains coverages; the quote has to name the carrier before you can compare Corgi’s RRG or admitted form to whatever USI markets, including PrivaSafe. 30 37
How You Start and What Gets Bound
Corgi’s speed claims are company-reported and still require underwriting. USI’s path is an inquiry, not a published bind-it-yourself portal. If you need a certificate on a customer deadline, ask Corgi which listed lines it will bind for your state, and ask USI which office will handle the file and which insurer would appear on the certificate. 2 27
Program Shape for Technology Risks
Corgi’s catalogue is oriented to startup packages, including directors and officers form summaries and risk-retention-group liability-only qualifications that matter when a reciprocal is proposed. USI’s Technology list adds worldwide cargo and stock, contingent business income, product liability, and international placement language that Corgi’s public startup set does not make the center of the offer. A missing label on either catalogue is not proof the other cannot obtain it. 5 32
Employee-benefits consulting is a USI practice page, not a Corgi storefront function. If benefits are in the same RFP as D&O, treat that as a USI-side scope question rather than a Corgi deficiency. 36
Geography and California
Corgi publishes a producer-license list and risk-retention-group registration examples with qualifications. USI’s “serving every state” office claim and a company-printed California license number do not establish which technology products are admitted or surplus lines for a California corporation. Confirm both proposals against the same legal entity, headquarters state, and remote-employee map. 26 1
What to Confirm in Quotes
- Whether Corgi’s proposed paper is admitted carrier, RRG, or both, and how that interacts with customer contract requirements. 9
- The named insurer and form for any USI PrivaSafe, D&O, or cargo layer. 37 32
- Bind path and documents: online purchase versus office/email placement, including who signs the binder. 2 27
- California product route for each line, without treating office location as eligibility. 44
Service Comparison
Corgi vs USI: documented services and availability
| Criteria | Corgi | USI Insurance Services |
|---|---|---|
| Business role | Corgi Insurance Services, Inc. is the licensed agency that sells and administers Corgi policies. The insurer named in your policy provides the coverage. 1,2,4 | USI describes itself as a U.S. insurance brokerage and consulting firm that arranges property and casualty, employee benefits, personal risk, program, and retirement solutions. The reviewed official pages do not identify USI as the insurer that issues commercial policies. 24,23,30,43 USI’s commissions page states that, as a licensed insurance producer, it may advise on insurance contracts, sell insurance, and obtain coverages for clients. Privacy and staff materials identify the operating company as USI Insurance Services LLC. Current California producer-license status remains independently unverified. 30,29,44 On 31 August 2026, Aon plc announced a definitive agreement to acquire USI from KKR and other shareholders for a $17.0 billion purchase price, with closing expected in the fourth quarter of 2026 subject to customary conditions including regulatory approvals. Aon stated that Aon and USI will continue to operate independently until the closing date. The reviewed announcement does not establish that the transaction has closed. 43 |
| Application process | You can apply online or book a call with a Corgi specialist. Corgi says eligible applicants can get a quote in minutes and buy coverage the same day. Its disclosures describe both an issued-policy-and-payment condition and temporary coverage under a written binder. Confirm the applicable conditions and effective date in writing. 2,1 | USI does not publish a self-serve commercial quote flow on the reviewed pages. Technology and P&C inquiries are directed to pcinquiries@usi.com or a local office. The contact page includes a website message box that USI warns is not secured in transit and should not be used for sensitive information. Small- and medium-sized management-liability inquiries are also directed to Select.Business@usi.com. No public binding timetable or online eligibility tool was found. 32,31,27,39 |
| Access to insurers | Corgi uses affiliated and partner insurers. Your policy names the insurer and claims administrator for your coverage. 1 Technology Risk Retention Group, Inc. appears in the NAIC company listing as Arizona-domiciled property and casualty company code 17763 (listed as TECHNOLOGY RRG INC). Corgi’s disclaimers call TRRG the group’s primary underwriting entity and a risk retention group organized under the Liability Risk Retention Act. The same Carrier Financial Strength paragraph describes TRRG as federally chartered and operating under federal prudential oversight; that wording is company language and is not adopted here as a legal conclusion. 17,1,3,2,18,19 A risk retention group is a member-owned liability insurer licensed in its home state. Federal law lets it operate in other states through registration. Members must have similar or related business risks. 18,19,21 For customers who need an admitted insurer, Corgi says it can use affiliated or partner carriers rated A- or better by AM Best. Options depend on the state, coverage, and business. Eligible admitted policies may have state guaranty-association protection, subject to that state’s limits. 1,3,2,9 Corgi says Technology Risk Retention Group does not have an AM Best rating. A financial-strength rating and admitted status are separate things. 1,5 Corgi Insurance Company’s August 2026 launch announcement did not give a financial-strength rating or a complete list of licensed states. Confirm both if they are requirements for your business. 9,22 Policies issued by a risk retention group are not covered by state insurance guaranty funds. Corgi includes this notice for policies issued by Technology Risk Retention Group. 20,2,1 Corgi says its insurers may share risk with reinsurers, while the insurer on your policy remains responsible for claims. Its public disclosures do not name the current reinsurers or their contract terms. 1,14 | USI’s reviewed product and PrivaSafe pages do not name the insurers that issue its commercial, technology, or cyber placements. Privacy materials say USI may disclose personal information to third-party insurance carriers as needed to provide insurance services. A 2021 claims kit lists many insurer claim-reporting contacts for clients who already have those carriers; that directory is not a current placement panel or underwriting list. 37,32,31,29,41 |
| Coverage lines | Corgi’s startup packages combine general liability, directors and officers, technology errors and omissions, cyber, media, employment practices, fiduciary, and hired and non-owned auto coverage. Its technology offering includes a Tech & AI Liability module. 2,8,10 Corgi’s D&O page describes claims-made coverage for directors, officers, and the company under form CORG-DO-0100, issued by Technology Risk Retention Group. The example has defense costs within the policy limit and a $25,000 per-claim retention—the portion of a claim you pay. Your quote and policy set the actual terms. 5 Risk retention groups can write business liability insurance for their members. They cannot provide other types of insurance, such as property coverage, so a package with those products needs another insurer. 19,21 | USI’s Technology practice lists insurance placement for property; business income and contingent business income; worldwide cargo and stock; errors and omissions; product liability; directors and officers liability; network security / USI PrivaSafe; and international. Those labels describe brokerage services. Limits, exclusions, insurer, and whether a given startup qualifies remain in a quote and policy. 32,37 USI’s commercial property and casualty pages describe advice and placement on workers’ compensation, property, general liability, auto liability, umbrella/excess, executive and professional risks, cyber, environmental, product liability, and related claims and risk-control services. Other industry pages add employment practices, crime, fiduciary, professional E&O, kidnap and ransom, representations and warranties, medical professional (malpractice) liability, and required bonding in the healthcare practice. Availability and wording vary by client, insurer, and jurisdiction. 31,33,34,35,39 USI’s employee-benefits practice describes consulting to design, price, and administer employer benefit programs, including underwriting analytics, HR administration support, population health, compliance/healthcare reform guidance, pharmacy and ancillary consulting. The private-equity practice separately lists employee health and welfare insurance services after a transaction. These pages describe consulting and placement services, not a specific insured health plan or carrier. 36,34 |
| Availability | Corgi Insurance Services lists agency licenses in 49 states and Washington, D.C.; New Mexico is not listed. Product availability varies by state and is subject to underwriting approval. 4,2,1 Rhode Island’s 23 June 2026 list of registered risk retention groups includes Technology Risk Retention Group, Inc., NAIC 17763, at 425 Bush Street, San Francisco. A complete list of states where TRRG is registered was not found in the reviewed sources. 16 | USI states that it is headquartered at 100 Summit Lake Drive, Suite 400, Valhalla, New York, with more than 10,000 professionals across over 200 U.S. offices, and that it serves every state. That is a company description of its office network and service footprint. It does not, by itself, establish that a particular commercial product is admitted, surplus-lines, or otherwise available in California or any other named state. 26,24,27,23 A USI Insurance Services LLC staff biography lists a San Francisco office and prints CA DOI License # 0G11911. The reviewed usi.com practice pages do not state which commercial products are available to California-domiciled startups, whether placements are admitted or surplus lines, or which licensed entity would appear on a California policy. Current California producer-license status remains independently unverified. A California office address is not treated as product eligibility. 44,32,31,26 |
