Chubb vs Coterie Insurance

Compare Chubb’s appointed-agent commercial underwriting with Coterie’s agent-only small-business MGA for BOP, general liability and miscellaneous professional liability.

Introduction

A consultancy that mainly needs a small businessowners policy (BOP) or miscellaneous professional liability can be quoted by a Coterie-appointed agent. A software company that also needs technology errors-and-omissions (E&O), cyber, directors-and-officers (D&O) and workers’ compensation is asking for a different mix: Coterie says it does not write workers’ compensation or automobile policies, while Chubb markets those lines as its own products. The two brands are not interchangeable storefronts. 45 54 4

Key Differences Between Chubb and Coterie

MGA Platform Versus Risk-Bearing Group

Coterie is a managing general agency (an underwriting manager for insurers) and an agent-facing digital platform, not a public consumer marketplace. Chubb’s U.S. commercial policies are issued by group underwriting companies, not by the Swiss holding company. 44 49 2

Coterie’s terms say carrier partners underwrite and issue policies. Chubb’s contact materials name Federal Insurance Company as a primary underwriting company. These pages do not show that one licensed agent holds both appointments; even if an agent quotes both, the contracts remain separate. 51 30

Catalogue Fit for a Technology Account

Coterie’s current core products are BOP, standalone general liability and miscellaneous professional liability, with cyber and employment-practices available as endorsements rather than as Chubb-style DigiTech. Chubb’s technology pages list E&O/cyber, financial lines and workers’ compensation as company products. A missing Coterie workers’ compensation line is an explicit non-write, not an inference from a blank comparison cell. 45 55 54 10 8

Coterie’s BOP guide describes eligibility up to $10 million in revenue (lower for contractors). Chubb’s BOP describes up to $30 million in revenue and more than 500 classes including technology. Those are company-stated appetites, not a guarantee either will bind a particular class. 56 7

Agent Workflow and Geography

Both paths go through licensed agents. Coterie advertises bindable quotes in under two minutes for eligible standard risks and says businessowners policies (BOP) and general liability are admitted in all 50 states, while its miscellaneous professional liability (MPL) guide conflicts on professional-liability states. Those speed and geography statements are Coterie’s own marketing, not a timed test here. Chubb says products vary by jurisdiction and does not publish a DigiTech state-by-state list. 49 57 2

Who the Policyholder Calls

Coterie tells policyholders to use their agent first, with My Policy Center for certificates and claims starts. Chubb likewise names the agent as the first contact, with Small Business client-center numbers for policies bought through that channel. 53 30

What to Confirm in Quotes

  • Whether Coterie MPL or a Chubb DigiTech/Pro ERM form is the professional grant. Miscellaneous professional liability is not the same as technology E&O. 57 10

  • Workers’ compensation and auto. Place those with Chubb or another market if Coterie is only quoting BOP/GL. 54 8

  • MPL availability in the operating states, given Coterie’s conflicting public statements. 57

  • Issuing carrier on each binder, including any Spinnaker surplus-lines path Coterie describes for certain policies. 51 30

Service Comparison

Chubb vs Coterie: documented services and availability

CriteriaChubbCoterie Insurance
Business role

Chubb is the marketing name for subsidiaries of Chubb Limited, a Swiss holding company, that provide insurance and related services. U.S. commercial policies are issued by U.S.-based Chubb underwriting companies, not by Chubb Limited itself. 39,2,25

Commercial buyers typically reach Chubb through independent agents and brokers. Chubb appoints producers, operates agent portals, and identifies Chubb Insurance Solutions Agency, Inc. as the licensed agency that administers Chubb Access appointments. Surplus-lines products can be offered only through licensed surplus-lines producers. 29,30,2,38

Coterie Insurance is a managing general agency and digital small-business insurance platform built primarily for licensed agents, brokers and distribution partners. It is not a direct-to-consumer insurance marketplace; a business owner is directed to work with an agent. 44,49,62

Coterie Applications, Inc. provides the platform under the website terms. Florida's current corporate record lists it as the member of Coterie Insurance Agency, LLC, the agency named in Coterie's footer; Massachusetts separately lists the agency with an active property-and-casualty producer license through December 28, 2026. 51,44,65,66

Coterie's website lists multiple investors, and Allianz X records Coterie as a current direct investment after leading a 2025 Series C round. The reviewed sources do not establish an acquisition, a controlling parent or Coterie's complete current ownership table. 44,62,63,65

Application process

Appointed agents and brokers can quote, and for eligible risks issue, small-business and cyber accounts through Chubb Marketplace, and can use Cyber Central for an express cyber quoting path. Marketplace cyber quoting is described for eligible risks with less than $100 million in revenue; referred risks go to underwriters. Businesses seeking coverage are directed to an agent, a U.S. contact form, or chubbsmallbusiness.com for small-business quote inquiries. The reviewed public pages do not describe a general-public online bind for middle-market technology programs. 9,10,30,31,12

A licensed agent starts a quote in Coterie's dashboard with the client's business name and address, selects the principal industry, confirms or edits prefilled details, customizes coverage and pays to bind an eligible policy. Business owners who do not already have an agent can use Coterie's agent finder. 48,49,45

Coterie advertises bindable quotes in under two minutes for eligible standard risks. Its terms qualify that claim: a quote or estimate is not an insurance contract, and coverage remains subject to underwriting approval, eligibility verification and formal policy issuance. 49,51

Coverage lines

For technology companies, Chubb markets DigiTech Enterprise Risk Management as a single policy addressing technology errors and omissions, media and cyber exposures, alongside Cyber ERM for cyber, privacy and media and Pro ERM for professional, media and cyber. Actual terms, limits and exclusions are in the issued form. 10,9,4

Chubb’s U.S. commercial catalogue for technology and other businesses also includes package policies (BOP, Benchmarq and Customarq combining property, business income and general liability), workers’ compensation, commercial auto, umbrella and excess, ForeFront management-liability parts (including D&O, employment practices, fiduciary and crime), property, inland marine, builders’ risk, equipment breakdown, ocean cargo, environmental/pollution, surety, product recall, and representations and warranties for large-account multinational programs. 4,7,11,15,25,27

Coterie's current core catalogue consists of a business owner's policy (BOP), standalone general liability and miscellaneous professional liability (MPL/E&O). A BOP combines liability with property coverage; the other two are distinct policies. 45,47,46,57

Coterie's December 2025 BOP guide states eligibility of up to $10 million in revenue and 50 employees, reduced to $5 million and 15 employees for contractors. It lists up to $1 million in building value and $500,000 in business personal property, with limits and availability still varying by state, industry and quote. 56,51

Coterie currently markets cyber, workplace violence, employment practices liability, restaurant, liquor liability and contractors equipment endorsements. Its BOP guide also lists optional hired and non-owned auto liability, equipment breakdown, drone liability and other property extensions. These are optional additions, not evidence of separate standalone policies. 55,56,58,59

Coterie's MPL is a claims-made professional liability policy for listed service professions. Its current guide says the basic policy includes a 60-day extended reporting period and offers longer periods for purchase; retroactive coverage and limits depend on the selected terms and eligibility. 57,51

Coterie's claims page expressly says it does not write workers' compensation or automobile policies. Hired and non-owned auto appears only as an optional liability endorsement in the BOP guide and should not be read as commercial auto physical-damage coverage. 54,56

Availability

Chubb’s U.S. site states that products and services vary by jurisdiction and are not available or suitable for all users. Company license materials describe Federal Insurance Company and ACE American Insurance Company as admitted property-and-casualty insurers in all 50 states. That company-wide licensing statement is not a product-by-product availability matrix. 2,25,36

California’s regulator lists Federal Insurance Company (NAIC 20281) and ACE American Insurance Company (NAIC 22667) as admitted property-and-casualty insurers in the Chubb Ltd group. The reviewed product pages do not publish a California-specific eligibility list for technology, DigiTech ERM or small-business BOP. Surplus-lines placements, if used, must go through a licensed surplus-lines producer. U.S. branch offices are not evidence that a product is available in California. 41,42,43,2,35

Coterie says BOP and general liability are admitted products across all 50 states. That is not account-level availability: its terms make every product subject to jurisdiction, business class, underwriting and formal issuance, and temporary catastrophe moratoriums can stop new BOP binding in specified areas. 50,51,61

Coterie's broad broker page says BOP, general liability and professional liability are admitted in all 50 states, but its December 2025 MPL guide says MPL is unavailable in DC, Illinois, Massachusetts, Montana, North Dakota and Virginia. A newer quick-start page narrows the statement to BOP and general liability in all 50 states and MPL in most states. Use the product guide and a current quote for MPL eligibility. 48,50,57

As of September 11, 2026, Coterie says eligible BOP risks 3 to 26 miles from the coast can be considered in Florida, Texas, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina, generally with up to $250,000 of business personal property and no building coverage in the coastal zone. Risks closer than 3 miles remain ineligible under this expansion, and Florida building coverage is unavailable statewide. 60,61

Servicing and renewals

Chubb tells buyers to use their agent or broker as the first service contact and publishes Small Business policy-service, billing and client-center support for policies purchased through Chubb Small Business or named affinity partners. Lower-midmarket materials describe a path from quoting and issuance through servicing and renewals. Large multinational accounts are offered Worldview for program documents, certificates and claims status. Technology marketing also describes dedicated underwriting, claims and risk-engineering teams, including nearly 500 in-house risk engineers in related consulting copy. 30,19,27,4,18

Policyholders can use My Policy Center, request policy changes, generate certificates and start a claim online. Coterie tells policyholders to use their agent or broker first for coverage questions and provides public sample BOP, general liability and professional liability forms for orientation. 53,51

Coterie's policyholder FAQ says each business location must have its own policy rather than listing several operating addresses on one Coterie policy. 53

Unless a policy says otherwise, Coterie's terms describe a 12-month policy that may renew automatically. Renewal charges may use the payment method on file, and the policyholder can contact Coterie or use account tools to change renewal preferences. 51
